The purpose of fat from an evolutionary perspective is to make the animal more fit not less. And this is what is seen in nature. A nice fat Emperor Penguin going into the Antarctic winter to raise it's chick is at its most fit state. A thin one is doomed. A grizzly going into a 6 month hibernation in the high arctic better be real fat if it is to survive. A blue whale going into the tropics

A local expert (very very good) on mushrooms, a doctorate professor of mycology at the local university, was crippled by some mushrooms he ate, with severe liver and kidney damage. Poisons in a mushroom can vary widely from area to area. And poisoning can be subtle. You may feel just fine but still have suffered some damage to your internal organs. After all people can do fairly well with 1

The edibility of the various mushrooms has been developed for the cooked mushroom only. There are poisons called heat labile that are deactivated by the heat of cooking. Cooking destroys the poisons in those mushrooms. Never eat raw mushrooms. They're probably all poisonous raw. Except for the Truffle, a true fruit that the fungi makes delectable so animals will eat it. The Truffle is meant

Thanks for posting up. It's like some scifi horror film with the alien parasite bursting out of the body. Parasites - they're all animals - should we be nice to them too? Is it ethical to be nice to them?

Grass juice is the very best source of green nutrition. From the grains, wheat, barley, rye, etc to the wild grasses (very good tasting), they're all way better than the other greens. I've never tried sugar cane or bamboo but they may be good too. Pandas sure do well on bamboo.

A possible help would be to juice all the greens and vegetables and drink the juice early in the morning several hours before eating anything else. And go as many days as possible without any greens whatsoever. If your metabolic systems for handling protein are functioning well you would be able to go without for an extended period. If not you need the more frequent intake. Eventually the healt

Most of the minerals from food production are being lost in the garbage and down the sewer. All kitchen scraps need to be returned to the garden either thru composting in a pile first or direct composting in the garden. Garbage disposals should be outlawed. The food scraps sent down them pollute our water and the minerals they contain are lost. The depleted food that is flushed down toilets cre

Thanks Lisa for the excellent article. I think their method of growing it is the very best, after all it is Winter Wheat. It just does not do as well in warm conditions. I grew some Winter Wheat for juicing here in central California outside in the garden during a very cold (for here) December (lows 32 +/-). It grew very slowly and was much sweeter and vital than when grown in warm temps. IM

Not me. The fruit flies got into my compost bucket full of nothing but banana peels and multiplied into about a million healthy vigorous flies. They turned the counter tops black. I made a trap baited with banana peels (a jar with a paper funnel) and released them outside. Well first there is still alot of nutrition left in the banana peel and maybe in desperate times it would be worth expl

Habitat loss is the biggest destroyer of nature, plants and animals. The factories, mines, buildings, roads, farms, orchards, livestock, all destroy habitat and hence nature. And the more stuff you have, the bigger your nature destroying footprint is. But to live as part of the modern world you need alot of stuff, computer, phone, car, house, etc. And if your're raising children you need

Probably only seed companies keep seeds alive with proper storage. But properly stored at about 0 F seeds can remain viable for 100s or even many thousands of years.

A more common problem is that the seeds are just so old that they're dead and rancid. This is the usual case with sunflowers seeds (shelled). Fresh live ones are a nice even light grey throughout the batch. A bad batch has alot of dark seeds and darker seeds. Most batches are bad. I wait on sunflower seeds until I find the rare fresh lot and then stock up and store in the freezer.

A film clip showing a gorilla eating a banana - as you would expect he peeled it and ate the core just as any human would. But then he ate the peel too! An apricot grown in mountainous southern Asia has an edible nut. People make marmalade out of orange peels. Teas are flavored with the oil from orange peels - ie Earl Grey with Bergamot.

Of much greater import than the life of a meal worm is the fate of nature itself. The native birds have been devastated by the onslaught of modern civilization. If they can be helped with some supplementary feeding of meal worms than it is a big plus for nature, the Earth, and good in general. The fate of most insects in a balanced nature is bird food anyway. So it's very natural and ethical.

Raise some pet butterflys. Google: pet butterflys - for a bunch of options. I read in Natural History magazine about raising a rare species of tropical butterfly in Florida. You watch the creepy caterpillars devour the food plants. Then magical butterflys emerge! These left every morning to forage and then returned at 4pm. They would come down the street and turn left at the stop sign a
