If you can get alot of mulch you won't need cardboard. Get a truck load of mulch from the city or a tree trimming service and lay down 4" (10 cm) or more of mulch. You should be able to get it for free. Plant into native plants or food crops leaving the mulch in place. A friend did this and it worked great.

QuoteAlthough the butterfly population may be suffering, humans are taking heat from Monsanto’s creations as well. Past research has shown that Monsanto’s Roundup ready crops are leading to mental illness and obesity, primarily by destroying the amount of good bacteria found in the gut. The corporation’s Roundup, containing glyphosate, has also been shown to cause infertility and birth

Artesian spring, even the word suggests something extraordinarily especial. When I was living in the redwood forest in Humboldt County California I'd hike 1/2 mile thru beautiful forest every day to collect 2 gallons of really special water from an artesian spring. Beautiful rare plants grew there, orchids and lilies.

The bee keeper is not stealing honey from the hive. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement. The bee keeper builds the bees a home, the hive box, trucks them to good foraging areas, protects them, and alot more work in their care. In return for his efforts on the bees behalf the beekeeper is entitled to the honey comb he takes. Far more honey bees prosper because of the beekeeper than would wi

There are over 4000 species of bees native to North America. The domestic honey bee is native to Europe. But since all natural habitat is plowed under and poisoned there are no native bees left to pollinate the crops, hence the need for the European honey bee. Native bees of North America: 400 species at Pinnacles National Monument alone: providing habitat for native bees:

2012 to 2014 is a great time to journey north to see fantastic sky shows. Here's some info I've gathered: Fairbanks is a favorite destination for aurora borealis fans. The most intense auroras are caused by solar storms, flares associated with sunspots. When solar activity peaks is the best time. It will be good over the next couple of years. The absolute best time is when a m

Here's more from the link I posted above: Quote As anthropologist Susan Abbott points out, " is not some kind of quaint hold-over from an archaic past, nor is it pathological in its constitution or outcome for the majority of those who experience it. It is a current, well-situated pattern of child rearing that is withstanding the onslaught of advice by contemporary childcare experts."

Eight in a bed: In Bud Cheff's book Indian Trails and Grizzly Tales he tells of living under the poverty of the great depression in the 1930's. They only had one room, one bed, and no spare blankets. So when friends came to stay overnite they all piled into their one small double bed, 2 men, 2 women, 2 small babies, and 2 older babies; the adults on the bottom layer and the babies layered on

Coco is right. It wasn't until modern times that mother father and children slept separately. Quote Differences in attitude toward sleep in general were equally clear between the two cultures. American parents used lullabies, stories, special clothing, bathing, and toys to ritualize the sleep experience, whereas Mayan parents simply let their babies fall asleep when they did, with no folder

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes! Quote Yule (Wiccan; Druidic) In Wicca, Yule is observed as one of eight solar holidays, or Sabbat. In most Wiccan groups or covens, Yule marks the rebirth of the Great God in the form of the solstice sun. Although the name Yule may have been appropriated from Germanic and Norse paganism, elements of the celebration are of modern origin. The root of

First, with higher temperatures more water evaporates from the ocean, leading to more snowfall. Second, the more rugged areas of the Himalaya have glaciers that are covered with debris from surrounding mountains. The debris insulates the glacier from the warming climate. These 2 effects together cause many glaciers in more rugged regions to remain stable or even to advance in spite of higher t

Here's a beautiful, insightful poem on death: On Death Kahlil Gibran You would know the secret of death. But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heart of life? The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light. If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life. For life and death are one, even

In a monsoon swept forest of India in the Himalayan foothills people train the roots of a Strangler Fig tree to form a living bridge across the raging torrent: The Fig lives to be over 500 years old and the bridge just keeps growing stronger throughout that time. It seems this would be possible with any large tree that likes to grow by rivers.
