Argh, I'm not as invincible as I thought! I'm so sick, and I'm pretty sure I have Strep Throat, because someone I live with had it just a little bit ago. I'm going to the doctor's today, so I should be finding out for sure pretty soon. I've been eating even healthier since it all started, but I wonder if that's enough. I know that the modern medicine solution to strep throat is anti-biotics

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone responding to my post. Everyone here is just... so supportive (not to mention full of good advice). I tend to be mostly a lurker on this board, but even then, I can just FEEL the love on this board, hee hee. Anyway, hearing your responses make me feel more normal, too. Knowing that so many people going raw struggle with the same things makes me fee

I've been working at going raw for quite a while now, with varying amounts of success. It's been frustrating. The longest I've made it without eating cooked foods is about 4 weeks. I get these HORRIBLE cravings, though. Sometimes I'll spend just hours and hours thinking about cooked food Just recently I had made it on raw for 3 weeks straight, and then I snapped, and ended up eating cooked

Oh, I just found the answer, actually. "Mercury is a silver-white to gray substance. If your thermometer is filled with a red liquid, your thermometer contains red dyed alcohol or mineral spirits and not mercury. These are safer alternatives to mercury fever thermometers." Phew, sorry about this post... I was just in a total panic, haha

I'm a little bit freaked out at the moment, and I'm hoping someone can clarify this for me... in a thermometer that contains mercury, the liquid will be silver, right? Would a thermometer with red liquid contain something else? (alcohol?) There was a thermometer that broke a few days ago that JUST NOW came to my attention, and I'm worried about what's inside it o_O I'm searching the intern

All 5 pounds at once... That's one of the reasons I was asking about this. It looks as if even the 5 pound bags of clementines (or tangerines) are, at the most, about 1,200 calories >_< Good thing I love eating, or this would be such a chore

Hi all, I've been crazy for clementines lately! I've been using nutridiary.com quite a bit lately, as well. My problem is that clementines are not listed anywhere on nutridiary. The closest thing I can find is "tangerines (mandarin oranges)". I looked clementines up on wikipedia, and there it says that they are a hybrid of mandarins and oranges. Is this true? Does that mean t

I don't know to much about the bacteria found in raw meat, but I DO know that bleach is poisonous! I would not suggest using bleach, and I would ESPECIALLY not suggest soaking dishes/cutting boards/utensils in bleach. I've heard it said that cutting boards are difficult to completely clean, maybe because of the many grooves formed from cutting food on them. I wonder if, like bacteria, toxic cl

I'm working very hard at being 100% raw. There have been quite a few days where I have eaten cooked foods, but I am definitely making progress. Yesterday, though, I finally realized something that may be hindering my progress. Right now, with my foods, I'm shooting for 80/10/10. My diet is pretty simple, but I like it that way. Trouble arrived yesterday, though, when I went out to dinner w

From the Orthorexia wiki: Orthorexic subjects typically have specific feelings towards different types of food. Preserved products are described as "dangerous", industrially produced products as "artificial", and biological products as "healthy". Umm... Most preserved foods ARE dangerous. Industrially produced products, by the very definition of their name, AR

I recently had what I'm pretty sure was an allergic reaction. It happened to me twice, both times within a few days of using some "Merry Hempsters" lip balm. The skin around my lips broke out in a light rash, and my lips became very dry cracked. I really want to get to the bottom of this! Though I'm 99% sure this was a reaction to the lip balm, there are lingering doubts. A frien

I was about to write that it has something to do with Miss America being a shallow beauty contest, and then I realized, aren't presidential campaigns kinda the same thing? Miss America contestants spend money on make-up, personal trainers, clothing, hair dressers, and maybe plastic surgery. Presidential contestants spend even more money on massive campaigns, TV ads, radio ads, print ads, hair d

I hear ya, Sapphire. My mom is gonna think I'm crazy too when she finds out about this I feel like such a geek... I had trouble getting to sleep last night because I was SO exciting about discovering 80/10/10 (I couldn't stop smiling). I was thrilled about breakfast this morning. I just ate a bunch of bananas, and thats it! No prep time I'm sure I'll still have some gourmet foods now an

The first time I was exposed to raw food was a few years ago at an all raw restaurant in Minneapolis called "Ecopolitan". I walked through the front door and I was in heaven. I had been a vegan for about two years and had always been angered by the lack of vegan options at other restaurants. I glanced over the menu, and it suddenly dawned on me that I could order ANYTHING I wanted.

Tough answer? No kidding! My favorites are always changing, but right now my top veggie is Asparagus. I can't believe there was a time in my life when I didn't like asparagus. My top fruit is probably honey crisp apples. I bought an organic honey crisp the other day and I just about died. It was so ridiculously good... like tasting an apple for the very first time Anyway, I'm sure by

Thanks you sooooo much, Karen. This is exactly what I was looking for, and much more. Especially since it was written by Victoria Boutenko, who I have an incredible amount of respect for. Thank you thank you thank you! Although unrelated to my initial question, I loved the part about the trees giving a final push of energy into creating seeds before dying. It's... the most beautiful thing

I love carrots! I've been eating a lot lately, but I'm always left with a HUGE amount of carrot greens. Recently I began wondering if they are edible, because it seems such a pity to let them all go to waste. I did a little searching online, and found that the general opinion is that they ARE edible. One person, though, wrote that they are mildly toxic(!!!) and can cause bad reactions in cert

Do you get much exercize? During the first few days after I switched to 100% raw, my energy sky rocketed. I had so much energy that I'd pace around the house, unsure of what to do with myself. I felt VERY restless. If I take a long bike ride or go jogging, though, I'm able to come back home and relax. I imagine that having a lot of extra energy might make it hard to sleep. Maybe it's not

Thank you very much, Bryan, for the two articles. They were EXACTLY what I was looking for. I would encourage anyone else concerned about B-12 to read them as well. Based on these two articles, it looks as if I don't actually need supplementation. Supplements appear to be an ineffective way of giving the body what it needs when compared to eating (surprise surprise) whole raw foods. This i

These articles definitely help It seems that parsley does contain B-12! I'm left wondering if it's a B-12 analogue (inactive), though. Let's hope not. The way I see it, I have 3 options for getting B-12: 1.) Parsley 2.) B-12 supplements 3.) Nutritional yeast Like I said, I'm really not into taking vitamin supplements. I don't know very much about nutritional yeast, so perhaps I'll h

I've had a very strong interest in raw foods over the last year or so, and right now I'm in the process of transitioning into 100% raw. It's all very exciting! I just finished reading the new edition of Victoria Boutenka's (spelling?) "12 steps to Raw Food", and I feel like it's finally given me the motivation I need to go 100% raw. I donated all my cooked/prcoessed food to a local f

I just moved out on my own about 2 weeks ago. Right now I just have a personal blender, but I've recently started making green smoothies. This is very difficult to do with just a personal blender! I want to buy a large blender that will last me a while, because I will be using it every day. I've heard good things about the vita-mix, but it is quite a lot of money for a college student to be s

I received a personal blender as a present a few days ago, and used it for the first time today. I love it! I made 3 smoothies, and even some guacamole. I had so much fun with it! I wrote to a friend of mine about it, who is also interested in raw foods, and sort of gave it my stamp of approval. He responded with asking me how fast the blades spin, wondering if they got hot enough to kill en
