John, thanks. I know Jeff used to be raw or mostly. Now he seems to be dissociating from it. Do you know why? Is it because he works for MacDougall now?

There are also peels, lasers, dermal fillers, tretinoin, and tazarotene. I have my suspicions about some of the over 40s with delectably smooth skin. I will not mention any names but it is interesting to see how smooth they became compared to 3 years ago.

It's also a caution about excessive PUFA in general. You may not be taking in nearly as much as you posted. It depends on the length of the sprout.

"In animal experiments, scientists divide a set of genetically homogeneous animals into an experimental group and a control group. They measure how much a control group eats, and then use that amount as the basis for determining how much to feed the experimental CR group, e.g., 30% less, etc."

There also aren't any vegan or 100% raw food diets among them either. This is an excellent observation. I think that very few people can maintain a 100% raw food vegan diet in the long term. I do cooked legumes. I take B12 and D supplements. A lot of the CR people eat very little raw food and they have great biomarkers and look young, too. Right but it seems that the more enzymes present, t

The difference between a poison and a cure is the dose. 5 g ALA and 12 g LA are a prudent dose. Remember you are getting as much as you need from your f+v, and taking flax is only adding to these quantities. Please read the link I posted. I think it is a high quality summary of the problem. I wish that I had written something like it myself. .

You are taking in more than 4x that much every day. These were short term studies. Have you considered the membrane theory of aging? The membrane theory of aging proposes that life span is inversely related to the level of unsaturation, and in particular the level of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, in membrane phospholipids. Some researchers think that a decrease in long-chain polyunsatu

It's probably junk fat. But I think it's important to consider that while not all fats are equal, they may all some similar properties, i.e. being lipid soluble is a very important quality. While fatty foods cooked in fast-food deep fryers that have been through 100s of cooking cycles are tremendously bad for health (especially if eaten often), they are still fat. Still soluble in fat, still n

EU hasn't set a tolerable upper intake level for alpha linolenic acid. The reason why is that they are not sure. I would not take more than 5 g per day myself. When the intake of these delicate fatty acids is very high there is more potential for lipid peroxidation. We don't want intakes too low but neither should they be too high IMO. I don't know of any populations whose intak

I don't think that they eat like they say they do. They might eat like that some of the time when somebody is watching. If they get stuck in a rut and it's the only way they can make a living they will keep on promoting things that they themselves don't do. On the whole, populations that eat a lot of plants, eat enough, and don't develop and deficiencies will do much better than people eating

Sue, they have ridiculous quotas. Mine has to serve all the counties in my state. They have to admit x number of students from each county. They have to admit x number of students whose parents did not go to college but made their living through agriculture. And so on. I have seen a number of remarkable young people get turned away. One thing that make them stand out is extrac

TSM I am like that with interpretations, too. Inordinately picky, yet totally transformed by the perfect performance. Always looking for new highs. And when I get them, wow wow wow wow wow. What a high! I am more into solo piano than orchestra, though. I don't consider myself to be a connoisseur of conductors and I don't think they are equally inspired by all that they conduct and this include

RP, It's mostly water, I am fine with it. But I have been eating like this for 10 years now. It might be a shock to the uninitiated. Even when I was young, I had a huge Greek salad every other day. In those days I used feta and not as many different vegetables but a lot of the components have remain unchanged. Basically I was raised on Greek salads. We had other foods for main dishes but ev

Co-op: You alternate terms of work and school, pretty much guaranteed a job on graduation. I don't know if they are still doing it these days. TA = teaching assistantship. you teach, they give you a stipend, pay your tuition and books. RA = research assistantship. you do research, same deal.

Music. My first love. Sigh. My mother, who was an opera singer, told me not to major in music. She said, "anything but music." (my mother majored in music) I still wish that I hadn't listened to her, even though I know she meant to spare me pain and disappointment.

No, I did early admissions. I did not apply for any scholarships but I co-oped with an engineering firm and they paid for my last two years. In grad school I had TAs and RAs so I didn't have to pay.

What I put in my salads: A head of romaine. Wash it, dry it off with a towel, and when it is dry, rip it into little pieces with your hands. The dressing will stick better that way and it tastes much better, too. Two handfuls of spicy radish sprouts. Two handfuls of arugula. I like the long, dark, bitter leaves. The baby ones don't have as much of a nutty flavor. A handful of spinach,

Yes, education has become an ugly thing for the most part. Universities still have some standards in STEM, though. We do so much for the kids compared to 20 years ago but the failure rates are still pretty high. Even if they took AP Calculus in high school they can still know nothing when they take it at the university. It's so much worse at the community college level. They want t

Lately my dressing is homemade hummus with red wine vinegar. A little bit of homemade tahini with lemon juice is nice, too. Sometimes I use lime. I put walnuts in my salad. Sometimes almonds, and sometimes mashed avocado. One future plan is to use blended olives but I haven't figured out yet which ones most closely mimic the taste of real, unadulterated olive oil. I tend not to like sw

Tai, You mentioned steamed. THat is sometimes confusing to me, because a study showed that boiling spinach for one minute in water greatly reduced the oxalic acid and the suggestion was to throw away the water. The inference was that the same would be true for chard. But then other people, like Normal Walker, assert that it's okay as long as it's raw. What do you think? I generally prefer

I think it's a nice diet, actually. Personally I would go for more greens, a huge head of lettuce, a few handfuls of spinach or chard, a few handfuls of turnip greens or some other crucifer. It's hard to get precise info for the sprouts when their nutrient content depends on the length. The biggest differences I see between your diet and the typically CR diets are that they tend to eat a lo

Tai, so sorry, I did not realize my mailbox would be full with only 5 messages. I cleaned them out. I will need an email address to send you the paper. The CR people had higher calcium intakes than raw. If I had to put my finger on it I would chalk it up to a few things: 1. They are very conscientious about meeting or exceeding RDAs for everything 2. They weigh and measure to the gram

Fresh, I am not sure why raw fooders would use coconut oil. They can use coconut meat for just about any purpose. Maybe they are adding "raw" cocoa and "raw" maca and "raw" agave to make "healthy" "raw" chocolate pudding. Cooked fooders could use it for frying or baking because it has a high smoke point. Or making popcorn.
