571. Thailand
Anyone been to Thailand? I'm going for two weeks next summer. I just made my reservations with a friend who isn't raw. I'm kind of concerned about that part of it. I don't want to be a bother. But I want to be able to stay raw while I am there. I've traveled to Europe, central America and Mexico but never to Asia before. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Lee

When I'm tired, I try to rest. Depression is a very real, serious matter. Try to take care of yourself. Have as much compassion for yourself as you would have for someone you love. Be good to yourself first. If service work helps you, do it. If it doesn't, spend that time nurturing and caring for you, exercising, feeding your body mind, and soul in whatever ways are best for you. Lee

Hang in there. Do the best you can and let the rest go. When I find myself craving cooked foods, what I am usually craving is flavor. I have experimented with raw alternatives that incorporate various flavors that I miss. Yeah, I know that there are people who think garlic is as toxic as diet Coke and curry is evil. But every now and then I miss the flavors of cooked food. There are some who w

What do you try to remember? What advice (besides strictly dietary advice like "Eat this" and "Eat that" rings true for you -- whether it's advice you have given or received? I went through some very difficult personal stuff this summer and early autumn and feel like I'm coming out the other side of it a bit... inch by inch. I'm sticking more to eating raw/vegan than ever be

When I was slim, healthy, and physically fit, fat people complained about me all the time. They complained, without invitation by me, that I was too skinny. I wasn't according to any measure. When I got fat, the fat people stopped volunteering that they didn't like my body. I work with mostly fat, out of shape people who eat the Standard American Diet. When I tell them I've lost 25 pounds of f

Awesome links!!! Wow! Great stuff to share with SAD friends who are curious. In "How To Get Fat Without Really Trying," the voice over says, "We all think it's our own fault... The food industry is at fault... and the government is at fault." ARGHHHH! I control what I put in my mouth. How 'bout a dose of personal responsibility, America? I support organic, whole food

Inertia is tough. Try to find something fun or interesting that gets you up and moving. Mostly, I do yoga classes, spin classes, and hike with a local group. I used to have a good bike but don't any more otherwise I would add biking with a group. Try some new things and see what works for you. I know someone who can just get up first thing in the morning and run for miles alone. Not me.

Thanks, everybody! I really don't care if Doug is a jerk or not. Well, ok, I'd rather hear nice things about everybody. But, the bottom line for me is if the system works. I'm interested in the merits or problems that are associated with the actual system, not in examining the personality behind it. Lee

Thanks. I followed a lot of the links there too. Seems like half the people who say 8/1/1 isn't varied are fruitarians. Huh? And a lot of people just don't like Dough's personality. I have never seen or met him so I can't comment on that. Even if he delivers his message in a way that offends some people... well, <sigh> you know, some of us just don't always come across too well. Cynthia, Sometimes I don't know what is going on with me until it's over... You know, hindsight is clearer... that sort of thing. Let us know how you are doing and keep us up to date. I hear ya about cooked food. I don't crave it and I know it isn't going to make things better. I hate hearing, "The only way out is through." Hang in there. Lee

Hi Troy, Can you (or someone else) tell me why some people don't think 80/10/10 is good? I'm not looking to start a flame war. I just want to learn as much as possible. I have not heard any down side to it. It seems to make a lot of sense to me. Thanks. Lee

This is the site I keep coming back to over and over. I was checking out another forum recently and saw that someone said that doing something raw/vegan helped them... but it wasn't what the forum owner was selling in her books/DVD and so the person who posted got spanked. Here, you can read, think, and decide for yourself what form of raw/vegan works for you. I have said this before, and maybe I

Bryan said, "It may be that as you eat more raw foods, that the shield between you and what's inside is starting to melt away." Oh man, that is so what has been happening to me. About ten days ago, I was driving home, on a big highway during rush hour nonetheless, and I felt stuff that I would really rather not feel... stuff that is real in my life that I need to deal with. I have

Try eating more raw fruits and vegetables. If you feel better, great. If not, then you know it didn't work for you. I'm not selling anything. I eat a primarily raw fruit and vegetable diet because I feel better this way. This way is the best for me. If you are truly curious about whether this is the right path for you, try it. I don't care if it doesn't work for others. It works fo

Jorgeben, I agree with you. Also, I hope that you do what is best for you. That may not be what is best for me. Coffee has negative effects on me. Others can drink a cup or two and not experience much in terms of negative effects. I wish I could drink it -- I am one of those weirdos who love the taste! I also love the whole ritual of the morning cup of coffee and raw/natural replacements

"Pattabhi Jois, creator of ashtanga yoga recommends drinking a cup before morning practice. It works for me" Iyengar has been known to slug people. Michio Kushi consumed steak and whiskey. Beware of using your guru's behavior to justify your own.

Dave, what you are saying makes a lot of sense... Maybe a big table with lots of fruit and another table with a salad bar... then if the "gourmet" food is delayed, folks could just fill up on the simple food. When I was first trying to go raw, I was overwhelmed by the recipes in the uncook books I have. They had so many ingredients and steps. Now, I've figured out that it is ok to e

I hardly ever drink. I was always a lightweight. Since upping my raw quotient to 90-100% for the past few months, I' have found that a single glass of red wine gives me a headache. (That may be the sulfites, which many people are sensitive too. It may be due to the level of tannins in that particular variety.) I am not so attached to drinking so I will just avoid wine in the future. My body is

coco, thanks for your support. At the end of a long day, this thread just hit a nerve. All I can do is be as healthy as I can be, be there for those who want me to... I have a lot of admiration for those who live with SAD family and stick with being raw. It was so difficult for me and I couldn't do it with my SAD (in)significant other. Now, I'm able to stick with raw. I have raw but I don't ha

Before my ex ran off with a crack addict... and took the kids... our kids... our kids thought fruit was the greatest thing. And they thought going to a salad bar was the biggest treat in the world. I used to tell them, "Get anything you want" and their eyes would open wide with wonder and hunger. They would stuff their mouths, smiling. Now, they have a wide screen TV, video games, a

I've never used my microwave (came with the place I live in) for anything but food storage. I don't have much for cabinet space so I use the microwave to store some plastic baggies of dried fruit, onions, other stuff that doesn't need to be refrigerated. Works great and I don't think it is killing the enzymes.

Relax. All that test does is measure your ability to fit your cog self into a pre-selected spot in The Machine. I know. I'm a high school teacher. Some students do not do well on standardized tests. You can improve your performance on them by learning (1) the skills tested, and (2) test taking strategies. You may never feel comfortable responding "How high?" when The Man tells you to

I'm so out of touch with myself. I was thinking of what Karen wrote above. It was kind of in the back of my mind... anyway... I've been feeling nauseated for several days. I'm keeping it simple with food intake, just watered down fruit juice and fruits. I was kind of freaked out a bit yesterday because I don't usually take time off from work. But I know that whatever I call this (detox, flu

I appreciate your responses. I used to think I was "in touch" with what was going on in my body, but I'm not so sure any more. I guess I will just hang in there and try to rest as much as possible. The thing that got me to post here is that I usually never miss work for being sick. I'm not the type to call in sick or leave work sick. Whatever is going on, Sapphire, I think you are ri

For the past couple of days I have felt really tired. I couldn't really figure out why. I came home from work yesterday, took a shower and went straight to bed and slept through to this morning. Then, this morning, I went to work and had to leave. I felt really tired, had a headache, was cold but was sweating a lot. I have muscle aches. I guess some people would call it flu-like symptoms. I ca

I can barely afford raw/vegan food. Super food tends to be super expensive. I might be more excited about them if I could afford them. I bought some dried goji berries once and they were ok, I guess. Kind of dry and chewy and very expensive. I'm not sure what it did for me besides super use up my food money that week. When all I could afford this week was just bananas one day and then just ap

I had all bananas one day this week then the next day ate all apples. I did it because I am broke but I felt really good. I didn't experience hunger or cravings. I think my body enjoyed the simplicity of it. Related to that... Today I was on my way home and was thinking of ways to reward myself after working really hard the past few days. Well, it was interesting. I found that what I really wa
