WY,

I think I like all his movies, even those old silly ones. But Gran Torino was really touching and ironic. It was also intense and funny as well.

I just watched Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman 2/11/09.
It was very sad for me, and I could only watch a minute of it.
What is the world has happened to him? Drugs? He was so good in
"Walk the Line"....putting his whole Heart into the performance....WY

Yes Jodi, and we're two of them. You don't have to be
Famous, or well known, to be odd. There are other odd ones here too.
Tamukha being one....and I say that with utmost respect.
Keep on keeping on.....WY

I felt sad seeing Joaquin on Letterman too. Being a lifelong fan of Johnny Cash (he was my first musical love beginning at four) I was so thrilled at the job he did playing him. I had liked him in Signs a lot too. He seems so genuine in his roles. He is handsome to boot.

I liked him too....he put his Heart into it.
I did think the movie concentrated too heavily on Johnny
Cash's Drug Addiction rather than on his Genius. I could have
done a better job writing the movie. I also thought that Reese
Witherspoon did an excellent job singing and
acting. And Joaquin Phoenix was very good....however, nobody
sings like Johnny Cash.
I was sad when both June Carter and Johnny Cash died in their early
70's....the victims of Self-Abuse.....WY

I hope I haven't offended anyone here. My purpose was
to be amusing.....but, as usual, it was 'open-mouth, insert-foot' on
my part.
I'm still concerned about Joaquin Phoenix. If anyone knows something
about his condition, please let me know.
BTW, I didn't like the way Letterman was making fun of him during the
2/11/09 interview. I always liked Jay Leno, but David Letterman doesn't
'witness' to my Soul....WY

I thought David Letterman's comments about Palin's daughter was over the line. I know he thought he was talking about her older daughter, but it doesn't change my feelings about it. I don't even have TV any more since the dtv switch. Only videos and DVD's for us now.

WY,

So glad to be inducted into the "Odd Ones" club, and shall be expecting my lurex uniform and badge in the mail any day now : )

I was hoping that Joaquin Phoenix was just having us on with his I'm-quitting-acting-and-devoting-all-of-my-time-to-a-rap-career nonsense, but sadly, it might have been an actual psychotic breakdown in slo mo. He reportedly seemed bewildered at Cannes, and we've seen neither hide nor hair of him since. Sad, sad.

I don't have quite the guts to give up me TV, though I'm sure my life would be so much the better for that. What causes my reluctance? It's not like me to be indecisive, so I just don't know.

pakd4fun,

I like Letterman, and am no fan of Sarah Palin, but that "joke" was plain vulgar, and as a fellow Midwesterner, I was appalled. Apparently his mom called to chew him out--serves him right.

Hey, that right there is a good reason to get rid of the TV--even the people on it experience brain rot from it!

I must confess that I hated "The Piano." I though it artificially grim and ploddingly misogynistic for a "feminist" story. And unconvincing: who would choose [filthy] Harvey Keitel over Sam Neill? Who?!

It's a Love Story that develops and deepens over
time. I found it believable. Don't go by looks alone....the
story is much more complex than that....WY

i liked the piano. it's a book though isn't it? bet i'd like that better.
same for secret life of bees, i think that movie can only be enjoyed if you haven't already read the book. it was so bland and think in comparison. i read her other book recently too, the mermaid chair. damn, but she's a terrific writer! it would make a good movie too.
has anyone seen Like Water for Chocolate? i know i mentioned it before but just wondering. just as good as the book, the screen play was written by the author and they are nearly identical!

WY,

I stand by my assessment : ) I'm not at all superficial and am quite in touch with my Scorpio sensuality, and why I think Harvey Keitel's character is filthy is that he's a caricature brute. I immediately found Sam Neill's character pitiable, in a way that mirrored that of his poor, put-upon mail-order-bride, and could not shake my sympathy for his position until he exacts his[also brutish]revenge. Maybe the book handles their cleaving more deftly, but to me the narrative of the film was one big missed opportunity. Also, the daughter was hellannoying. Children like that deserve to be put into dank, seaside orphanages.

coco,

Like Water for Chocolate is a great story, and oddly well-done considering how hard it is to translate magic realism in book to film.

Really?....Anna Paquin won an Academy Award for Best Supporting
Actress. The second youngest female ever to do so. I thought she
gave a Command Performance. However, I didn't like it when she
'snitched' on her Mom.....WY

Here's Anna Paquin (age 11) winning an Oscar for Best
Supporting Actress in "The Piano" (1994). Only Tatum O'Neal (10 yrs old) in "Paper Moon" has been younger.....WY

WY,

I know she won an Oscar, but her character was hideous! And The Academy, I have found, is no arbiter of real talent. Today, AP still plays pouty, but in the form of a Southern vampire-lover on the TV show "True Blood." Hmmm, she was also pouty in the "X-Men" movies. I see a pattern . . .

I loved the Piano. As far as choosing Harvey Keitel over Sam Neil, that is the way attraction works, it doesn't need to make since. Sam Neil was truly an ass and she could feel it.

WY,

It's almost impossible to find a bad Jane Austen adaptation--this one was really good! You also can't beat the Bröntes; who can resist "Jane Eyre," with Timothy Dalton as Mr. Rochester, really? I recently saw "Roman Holiday" again on TCM. Still chokes me up after so many viewings. That Gregory Peck . . . I'd abdicate my throne for him : )
