Hi,

I have no knowledge of flavoring food and would like some advice on making my standard lunch meal more palatable:

-Lentils (cooked)
- Tomato sauce
- Mixed vegetables including broccoli, green beans, mushrooms, carrots, onions

Check out the recipes on this site - the ones you get to from the opening page.
They're great. And there are some with those vegetables.

I also listed LOTS of recipes in the Recipes and Food Preparation Forum. Look for the "Wraps Galore" strand. It includes some Italian and Mexican recipes with tomato sauce. I've included spices for you to select from. Experimenting is the best way to learn.

You may find that the longer/more you eat raw food, the less you'll want spices. But they are great for bridging the gap from a SAD diet.

I hope you find some you enjoy.

fresh herbs are always nice flavor enhancers ..honestly tho you would have to go graze them in the supermarket or grow a bunch of your own to see what you like smiling smiley

dill is fun , anise is kinda licorcy .. ... alot of folks like cilantro , i still use powdered garlic from time to time or sage to satisfy savory cravings ..

really yer gonna have to experiment smiling smiley

Another school of thought is telling us that flavoring makes us eat more than we should, we should leave food in its natural state.

The common thought would be to season with salt and black pepper. Id say if you do want to use salt at the least use a mineral rich salt such as pink himalayan.

Seaweed granules can improve flavor. Fresh herbs as has been suggested aswell as dried can help enhance flavor.

A bit of real sea salt won't hurt, but the fresh herbs suggested are a great idea. I have found that it helps to buy organic--there's a more developed flavor in things grown in nutritious soil--and to eat slowly to ensure that I am really tasting the food, rather than wanting to taste seasonings.

Here's a dipping sauce for your vegetables:

1 orange
2 ribs celery
small red bell pepper
handful of cilantro
2 tbsp of nuts or seeds (I like hemp seeds)

Blend.

OP... I had the exact same problem.

Some good tips are too buy some honey. Any time you make a salad, treacle a teaspoon of honey all over it. It vastly improves the taste of the meal.

Grind various herbs and do the same, sprinkle them over your salads. Most of my salads are spicy! Buy a mortar and pestle if you dont have one.

The honey acts as a great adhesive so the herbs stick on your lettuce leaves etc..

I second the dates. Any dried fruit soaked and blended with a bit of water actually.
