Raw red yams.

Started reading about the toxicity of raw yams, not sweet potatoes. I also notice it is usually a grey yam in question, or yellow. The reason I wonder is because I juiced an entire raw red yam, with dandelion greens, and pineapple. I never noticed any negative effects at all. I remember feeling great that day. Doe the red yam, which is not very bitter, have an uneffective amount of toxins. Perhaps I consumed too small an amount to cause problems. Any yam experts? Should I just cook my yams?

If you mean "Garnet" yams, these are actually sweet potatoes. Yams are not easy to find, except in ethnic markets in most places(easier if you live in the southwest or where large Caribbean populations reside).

Thanks for reminding us of that link, RP!

Sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) are safe to eat raw, not sure about yams though (g. Dioscorea).
