I want to start this thread off with a Post by Dave Klein who was the Moderator of this Website when I first started posting here 14 years ago. I used Dave’s Post when I started a Thread entitled “Hitler was NOT a Vegetarian!!!,” however, I’ve learned a lot in the last few years.

Long ago, my rational was influenced by all of those Vegetarian Quotes by Tolstoy, Pythagoras and Einstein and believed that Meat Eaters were more Violent and War-like and since I used to believe that Hitler was the epitome of EVIL, I bought into the LIE that Hitler was NOT a Vegetarian!!!

But what if Hitler was NOT the epitome of EVIL and what if Hitler really was a Vegetarian?

Of the most enduring lies about vegetarianism is the false claim that Adolf Hitler was a vegetarian. Newsweek most recently repeated this deceit in its October 4th issue when senior editor Jonathan Alter, in an op-ed piece on presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, compared Buchanan to Hitler: "Pat is a charming man off camera, kind to his wife and co-workers; Adolf was a vegetarian, kind to pets."

Likewise, USA Today founder Al Neuharth has twice used his weekly "Plain Talk" column to perpetuate the Hitler-was-a-vegetarian myth. In an October 4, 1996 column titled "Food for Veganuts: It's OK to 'Pig Out," Neuharth informed his readers that October is Vegetarian Awareness Month, encouraged them to eat animal flesh, and mentioned Hitler as one of a dozen "historically noted extreme thinkers or behavers, for better or worse, who were full-time or sometime vegetarians..." In a column published last March 19, Neuharth urged readers to celebrate the Farm Animal Reform Movement's 15th annual Great American Meatout day by eating animal flesh and, in an attempt to discredit vegetarianism, cited Hitler, Emperor Nero, and Leo Tolstoy as "examples of nonmeat eaters who, although brilliant, were at least a little nutty...."

The best short commentary I've read about Hitler's diet appears in Richard H. Schwartz's Judaism and Vegetarianism (Micah Books). Is "it relevant what Hitler ate or did not eat?" asks Schwartz. "No rational person would cite Hitler's non-smoking to discredit non-smokers, but his alleged vegetarianism is repeated ad nauseam."

Hitler occasionally ate a meatless diet because he "suffered from excessive sweatiness and flatulence," writes Schwartz, but "his primary diet involved eating meat." As evidence, Schwartz cites Ralph Payne's ~he Life and Death of Adolf Hitler, which mentions the Fuhrer' s fondness for Bavarian sausages, and other biographies which mention Hitler devouring liver, pig flesh, and game.

Was Hitler, as Newsweek's Alter claims, "kind to pets"? That depends. As Hitler consolidated his hold upon Germany, one of the many laws established against German Jews was to forbid them from owning pets. One result was countless Jews were forced to euthanize their animal companions. On the other hand, it is well-known that Hitler loved dogs--pure breeds, that is--not mongrels. His obsession with purity led to laws against the inter-breeding of animals--both pets and farm animals.

Why do nonvegetarians endlessly claim that Hitler was a vegetarian? The reasons are several: poor reporting; a lack of understanding about vegetarianism; and, in the case of Neuharth, an apparent hostility toward a meatless diet. The end result, though, is the same--vegetarianism comes across unfavorably.

Let's destroy the myth of Hitler's alleged "vegetarianism." When you encounter claims like Alter' s and Neuharth's, set the record straight. I have no hatred in my heart. In fact I spend most of my free time helping others, for free, in a nursing home every day. I rarely take a day off from volunteering.
