I love bitter gourds when cooked! Can I also eat them raw? Is there any side effects? Re: Can we eat raw bitter gourds?

Date: May 23, 2014 08:35PM I don't know if there are any side effects but I have eaten them raw, without an adverse reaction, though not more than a few pieces at a time. They certainly are properly named; they are bitter! Re: Can we eat raw bitter gourds?

If you go to Google and enter Bitter Gourd, you'll see images. You've likely seen them around, especially if you frequent stores with produce from Asia. Re: Can we eat raw bitter gourds?

------------------------------------------------------- > Where do you find the seeds to grow them at home? Another customer and I were discussing Indian recipes in an Indian grocery store. She told me she owned a farming operation in the south and would send me seeds so I could grow my own bitter gourds/melons. She took down my address and sure enough in a few weeks a bunch of seeds found their way to my mailbox. These days you can easily get them online. Amazon has many varieties to choose from. I like the small very bumpy ones the best. The larger ones don't have nearly enough time to mature in my growing zone. They don't transplant well. For raw vegan style I slice the bitter melons to 1/4" and dehydrate them (seeds and all) until they are crispy. I pulverize them as needed. Re: Can we eat raw bitter gourds?

Date: February 22, 2015 12:51PM Thank you SueZ, I will order some seeds from Amazon and grow some.
They have been part of my diet, I use them in smoothies or dressings. Re: Can we eat raw bitter gourds?
