i checked out the site you recommended for newbie

seaweedman.com

but as i perused the site i didn't see anywhere
where they test for heavy metals
or have any way of filtering them out or anything
so i was wondering what makes you trust them other than the fact that they are not japan etc.

There are several reasons I trust Larch and put no faith in the "organic" label for seaweeds or once a year, probably selective, heavy metal testing on seaweeds collected by subcontracters. Here's one article of many I've read on the subject...

I also test what I buy with a good recently calibrate radiation detector at home.

We've been over this before. You can have seaweed and even your local air tested yourself at a lab if you want to be absolutely sure.

There are venders selling it cheaper but Medcom has a very good warrantee so I bought from them.

also could you let me know what the range and interpretation is for that reading

due to the migrating nature of currents, i find this a fascinating but complex issue

I don't remember the exact numbers as I stocked up and did my testing a long time ago but the numbers were barely over backround at that time. Now they are under that backround, in my area, where backround radiation has tripled and does have some spikes now and then. Oddly, the highest reading I got was from Japanese seaweed that I found at the back of the pantry which had to have been sitting there around 8 years which is when the health food store I bought it from went out of business.

It is very complex but at the same time it's very simple - we are screwed. There is really only one ocean, fallout falls out anywhere and everywhere, and the radiation does not disperse. It biomagnifies and it bioaccumulates and then there is the inexcapable plutonium from the MOX fuel which is unfathomably distructive. We will just have to do the best we can. There are no answers on this one.

yes, it is simple and complex
it is simply ONE ocean
with plenty of eddies, currents, undercurrents, upwelling along with massive gyres
and the ever perennial migrations that will allow a tin foil gum wrapper from chicago to end up in someone's backyard in new zealand

but i DO love seaweed
