Worth reading in full and passing on for educational purposes. Quote Runoff from modern life is feeding an explosion of primitive organisms. This 'rise of slime,' as one scientist calls it, is killing larger species and sickening people. MORETON BAY, AUSTRALIA -- The fireweed began each spring as tufts of hairy growth and spread across the seafloor fast enough to cover a football field

Hey coco, it does only take a few minutes when refilled by a commercial air pump, but bear in mind that those machines use up a lot of energy compressing the air into the storage tank in the car. The system as a whole is less efficient than electric batteries and much more so than gasoline. Although the technology can always improve with more investment, right now it is worse for the environme

Hey coco, The air car idea is good because it doesn't have any polluting emissions in situ (it actually purifies the air!), and also because the "fuel" is so plentiful and cheap, but in terms of energy efficiency, it's not great since it requires a lot of energy to pump into the pressurized canister containing the air, and there are a lots of losses. An electric car is more efficient

Some reasons why biofuel is NOT the answer It doesn't even mention the fact that biofuels also place increased pressure on commodity crop prices, since biofuels and normal food crops are in competition for land, thus worsening the condition of billions of poor people around the world who depend on such food and which can't afford it. Crop inflation has skyrocketed in the last couple of years

No one else talks about monetary policy and sound currency, no one else talks about a non-interventionist foreign policy and ending the American Empire, no one else talks about civil liberties and freedom and liberty in the full extension of its meaning. And certainly no one else shows how all these things are related, reflecting the profound wisdom of the Constitution and the founding fathers of

I think if you look at the entire lifetime emissions of fuel cell cars, from construction to disposal, they are not the best option for the environment, even if they do only emit water vapor as they are being driven around. This is roughly what I mean Cheers, J

Hey suncloud, it is quite a lovely letter indeed. I thought your story was very sad in a way but also very warm. I must say that I have never experienced the situation you described, but can try to imagine how it would feel to be a witness of such a terrible injustice, let alone be on the receiving end. Let us all spread the message of peace and freedom the MLK did throughout his life. Hey ver

<<-If YOU truly love coffee...and you believe it is healthy for you....you should drink more of it. If you DON'T want it...and it conflicts with your goals....then it's a matter of getting off the fence...and admitting that you DO it....but you don't LOVE it.....and it's not a part of YOUR goals and dreams.>> Very well said indeed. THE world is on the verge of a water crisis. As the global economy and the world's population continue to expand, we are becoming a much thirstier planet. It is important to realise just how much water we need to make the various aspects of our economy work. Every litre of petrol requires up to 2.5litres of water to produce it. On average, crops grown for their bio-energy need at least 1000 li

More evidence for evolution People who doubt the truth of Darwinian evolution love to claim that there are no transitional fossils—no remains of ancient creatures that have the characteristics of two different kinds of organism, mixed together. If evolution were true, you'd expect to see them. Actually, you do: transitional forms like Archaeopteryx, a lizard-like bird, have been known fo

Happy MLK day to you too! It's always worth listening to his "I have a dream" speech one more time And to read the famous letter he wrote while imprisoned in a Birmingham jail My Dear Fellow Clergymen: While confined here in the Birmingham city jail, I came across your recent statement calling my present activities "unwise and untimely." Seldom do I pause to answer

The short answer, the stars Some recent news, Astronomers at the Carnegie Institution have found the first indications of highly complex organic molecules in the disk of red dust surrounding a distant star. That's great, heard about the development a couple of years ago, glad to see it made it to production. There's also been good news in the electric car sector, with improved batteries being developed all the time. A new battery that can be recharged to 90 percent capacity in under five minutes and lasts 10 years will start shipping in March, Toshiba Corp. announced this week, hailing it as &

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to call you out on the following logical and well as moral fallacies: QuoteAfter trying to objectively consider ways in which this theory has truly benefited and enlightened humanity, I arrived at the following conclusion in which true love supersedes, triumphs over, and contradicts evolution. I think any rational mind that considers the following observations w

Note they looked at starchy vegetables like zucchini, broccoli and carrots. The further you go away from fresh fruits and tender leaves (ie a presumably natural evolutionary diet), the more cooking may conceivably increase the availability of nutrients in the "food". Think legumes like lentils for example. Cheers, J

Hey cosbynian, In my opinion you seem to be deeply confused about a wide variety of scientific issues, I shall attempt to address some of them in the following. Before I do that, I would just like to address the fallacious argument used by some people when they provide "evidence" for intelligent design/creationism. Essentially, they argue that "absence of evidence equals evidenc

Hey lightform, Just a thought... does convincing another of ones feelings/understanding give greater personal understanding or make it more correct ? The short answer is yes/no. I think discussing things, anything under the sun, can only be a good thing and lead to a greater understanding from both parties. I believe discussion always entails a raising of awareness in some facet of argument

Hey suncloud, Spinoza is quite an interesting character, he espoused the idea of monism, which in essence regards the body and mind as part of a whole, rather than as separate and different entities. It is similar to the non-dualism which Bryan commented on in a different thread, but opposed to dualism which is espoused by the major religions, and which seems to be almost innate in human beings,

Here is some more information regarding Einstein and his religious views. He explicitly rejects the notion that he believes in a personal god of the Judeo-Christian (Abrahamic) type. His reasons and reflections are quite interesting. The question of scientific determinism gave rise to questions about Einstein's position on theological determinism, and even whether or not he believed in God. In
