QuoteEditor's note: The book Amusing Ourselves to Death, by Neil Postman, was first published in 1985. I just stumbled upon it last week. What follows is a short excerpt from the introduction to the Twentieth Anniversary Edition by Neil's son Andrew, and the brief Forward to the book by Neil. I highly recommend this book. - MAN Introduction - by Andrew Postman Now this? A book of social

Hey Simple Living, QuoteJose, you haven't given a single fact in anything you've said. It's all opinion and something that you've taken by faith. I'm not sure what you're referring to as all I've said in this thread is that the video and Q&A are interesting and insightful for those seeking a well rounded religious education. Haven't made any assertions that I'm aware of, aside from simpl

Watch the video and read the book elnatural, there really is nothing to fear. This letter from Thomas Jefferson to his nephew, Peter Carr, from Paris, August 10th, 1787, contains some good advice on how to educate oneself on the topic of religion. QuoteDear Peter, — I have received your two letters of December 30 and April 18, and am very happy to find by them, as well as by letters from

A fun cartoon that deals with the bizarre and non-intuitive wave-particle duality of quantum mechanics. This describes how electrons exhibit both particle and wave-like properties. It also mentions that in quantum mechanics experiments are observer dependent in that the observer can never be completely separated from what is being observed. Cheers, J

Thanks for the list arugula, I hope elnatural responds to that and also the questions I posted earlier. Another argument that some ID people tend to use is the fallacious assertion that the human eye is "irreducibly complex" and must therefore be "designed". Of course this argument is completely false, and one can show a sequence of events where from a very primitive light

Isn't it great that science allows us to explore Nature by extending our senses through mechanical contraptions and appreciate Nature at more distance scales, for example, and not just the scale we are used to in the everyday? These images are a testament to the beauty of Nature, and of science as a means of exploring it. QuoteWellcome Image Awards A striking display of shapes and patte

Ah, ok, thanks for pointing out the chronological age/glycotoxin detail they overlooked. QuoteWe were designed to be fueled primarily by sugars. I know you didn't really mean to say that, although I find myself inaccurately saying slightly ambiguous things like that too. I was just thinking about the evolution debate in the OT, and expressions like this might give people the wrong idea. I a

Hey Narz, Good to see you around. That's a good point you raise since evolution is a highly falsifiable theory. All one has to do is find rabbit fossils in the pre-cambrian and you're done Hey elnatural, a further point is that in fact evolutionary theory predicts that complexity rises as time progresses, through random mutations and natural selection, which makes sense and is backed b

Haha, you beat me to it arugula Yes elnatural, by looking at our evolutionary ancestors you'll find when all these systems that you talk about first evolved, and plenty of examples of organisms with primitive hearts, brains, limbs and so on. I thought the video which I posted was quite cool since it reflects a few characteristics which real life evolution also shares, such as the relative

Yes, I think the lack of distinction between raw unprocessed carbohydrates and cooked processed carbohydrates is probably an undue influence in her lists. I think the overall categories of food are placed in a correct hierarchy though, even if maybe she needs to rescale a little so that fruit become slightly anti-inflammatory. Maybe there hasn't been enough research done to draw a distinction b

This is quite interesting. QuoteA neckband that translates thought into speech by picking up nerve signals has been used to demonstrate a "voiceless" phone call for the first time. With careful training a person can send nerve signals to their vocal cords without making a sound. These signals are picked up by the neckband and relayed wirelessly to a computer that converts them int

This short video is a good illustration of how evolution can result in complexity and functioning organisms. Smart illustration of evolutionary concepts refuting a favourite straw man argument that ID/creationist supporters tend to bring up - the analogy of a mechanical clock somehow implying an intelligent designer. Whilst not entirely accurate in my opinion, it is nevertheless illuminating to see what kinds of foods cause an inflammatory response when eaten, and which ones have anti-inflammatory properties. Bearing in mind that the body responds to stress and injury through inflammation, if a food causes an inflammatory response that is not considered a good thing. Chronic inflammation is also a precursor t

I don't know, but if we take the view that we are organisms that have evolved from simple origins through the course of billions of years, then perhaps we can artificially recreate that evolutionary process of natural selection and speed it up to create organisms possessing artificial intelligence that would be quite similar to us in that they could feel as well as be sentient. This would, among
