Hey pakd4fun, thank you. Hey Omega, of course, in the process of discussion and the free flow of ideas, one should always be open to new perspectives, which is why I repeatedly call upon anyone making a claim which I consider dubious for their evidence, as well as calling for specific examples of flawed reason or faulty evidence when any claims I make are contested. Cheers, J

<<EVIDENCE IS BIAS>> Yes, evidence is certainly bias, it can point you away from a faulty theory to a more coherent one. It is however preferable to strive for this kind of bias, rather than bias coming from prejudice or bias coming from groundless speculation. <<I can look to any pharmaceuticals to see this when they get pulled off the shelves.>> If by this you a

On the topic of diabetes, there is plenty of evidence that whole fruits actually help to avoid these kinds of problems, for example: QuoteCitrus Compound May Be Key To Diabetes Breakthrough POSTED: 8:53 am EDT May 17, 2008 UPDATED: 9:09 am EDT May 17, 2008 ORLANDO, Fla. -- Citrus crops like grapefruits and grapes contain a compound that could help the diets of diabetes patients and even

Hey lightform, <<If we were to assume that we are only aware of a limited part of ourselves, and that this is what we experience as human, then it would follow that any philosophies which we create based upon this awareness or experience would be limited as well. >> Sure, if we become aware of other parts of ourselves then the answer to the original question would indeed change.

Yes, that is exactly what I meant, just BE, bring happiness to yourself and those around you. Why should it matter what comes next? We'll cross that bridge when we get to it, as they say Cheers, J

This is what I meant earlier when I said other problems are more pressing We are on course to destroy this planet long before any climate change does it for us. Although I do agree that a lot of the same problems involving climate change and the destruction of Nature are involved, they are largely intertwined. This is also some very bad news, in my opinion Cheers, J

<<sometimes friends or significant others can pass away in the BLINK of any eye waaaay before their time and you can't really accept that you will NEVER see them again >> I know that these situations are hard to deal with, and I feel that most if not all of the religions of this world are in part an attempt to mitigate this loss we feel for our loved ones. It is hard to accept

As well as the good advice given here, it might be a good idea to do moderate exercise a few times week, if you don't do so already, since apart from being a good way to relieve stress, it also gets the juices flowing helping to eliminate toxins. Cheers, J

Thought this would be relevant in the main forum in order to raise awareness. QuoteGenetically modified (GM) foods are inherently unsafe, and current safety assessments are not competent to protect us from or even identify most dangers. Overwhelming evidence to support this conclusion is now compiled in the book Genetic Roulette: The documented health risks of genetically engineered foods, whi

Hey omega, For many people, religious dogma still dominates their lives, as they have not developed the necessary tools to critique it. I don't think it really necessary to provide numerous examples of this, as in the US it is actually a big minority of the population that believes in things like creationism, for example. QuoteMy main point, however, was that an individual's ego-based inte

Hey jono, thanks. While I would agree with her in her critique of GMOs, I don't see what that has to do with evolution or "neo-Darwinism" or "reductionism in biology or physics", which she also seems to criticise. If she beleives evolution is much more dynamic than what the "neo-Darwinists" think, and indeed it's true, then it will be verified experimentally s

Hey veronique, Consciousness, to me, seems to be a very delicate and intricate balance of many neural cells, and once this delicate dance comes to an end, our consciousness and awareness goes with it. There are, as you say, parts of us that will carry on almost forever, such as our basic components, atoms, etc.. and maybe even our memory might live on for some time in other people, but I don't

Pretty spectacular molecular visualisations of DNA coiling, replication, transcription and translation. From I find it helps to be able to visualise in some way how things are working, and this video provides a good example. It's pretty amazing what science can allow us to understand and even visualise. Cheers, J ps Yes, Feynman was a brilliant guy, great teacher too.

Hey context, Yes, I did, I quote from them in my reply. You don't need to put much faith in science, since you can check directly with the evidence to see if your theory makes sense or not. Whereas in matters of theistic religious dogma, where extremely extravagant claims are made with a complete lack of supporting evidence, faith is the only thing one can rely on. I am arguing that this runs

Hey wong, No pressure, it's cool Hey context, Quotemuch of science is bias through commerce and intent for gain. Greed is often the movtive. Therefore wikipedia is unpure... The thing about science is that it's open and actually encourages criticism and experimental evidence. Dogmatic religious belief, on the other hand, is the complete opposite, taking what some people a long time a

I think it's definitely good to try to keep kids' innate imagination and creativity as active as possible, but at the same time perhaps find a way to prepare them for the "real world", as they will have to inhabit it, and the issues that come with that, at some point in their lives. A challenging balance to be sure. I think one of the most important things to encourage in kids is their

Hey jono, I have to say that the first article you posted and which corresponds to the title of your thread seems very strange, just from the first few lines of the abstract: QuoteThe debate on evolution between the creationists and the neo-Darwinists is not just sterile, it misses the central issue, which is that neo-Darwinism is wrong and dangerous. It is promoting and misguiding a runawa

Greenhouse gases, such as water vapour and CO2, are not technically "pollution". CO2 is actually a very important and essential gas, completely critical to plant growth, for example. What is waste for most animals, becomes food for other living beings such as plants. The same can't really be said of a lot of toxic chemicals we belch out all around the world, such as dioxins and other

I think it is better to be cautious when talking about the global climate, since it is an exceedingly complicated thing. I think the global warming debate is becoming too politicised, whereas it is the scientists that should determine the veracity of global warming claims without any undue pressure. There are many contributions to the global climate and to my mind it is not very well understoo

Yes, I agree, contamination from animal sources is quite common and should be kept in mind. From what I've read, I think parasitic infections are a lot more prevalent than people realise. The somewhat recent massive contamination of spinach with E-coli from neighbouring animal farms residues is one example, parasitic contamination works in exactly the same way. Cheers, J

Hey arugula (and others), Have you seen these before? One pack is supposed to last for 1,000 washes, making it eco-friendly and also very affordable. Save quite a lot in the medium to long term, as the per wash cost is about 1/5 of normal cost. Cheers, J
