I sprout oats, rye and spelt all the time and just love them. The rye and spelt make great whole grain side dishes for salads and stuff...bit of olive oil, fresh parsley, dash of himalayan salt (if you wish) and they're good to go. I like to grind the oats into flour in my vitamix, then add almond or flax "milk" and raisins for a luscious cream of oats breakfast. You can find f

<I just had my first bottle (pretty good tasting) and it was like drinking 3 beers. I felt a little bit drunk.? There's a small percentage of alcohol in Kombucha, which is why you felt a bit tipsy. In fact, some brands have almost as much as beer. I also got way woozy the first time I drank one so I just stay away. Don't much like that feeling either. ~lanie

I don't drink green smoothies as much as I'd like to now because they started making me gag. The only reason I do at all is because my digestion really likes them and I like the idea that they're healthy but, blechhh. The first time I made one I thought it was great...whole head of spinach, several celery stalks and a large sweet apple. Then I made the same one with kale and it was not so

I'm probably not in the majority on this but I think Mana bread is a great transition food. It's carried in refrigerator section of many health food stores like Whole Foods and made from sprouted organic grains and filtered water...no yeast, oil, sugar or other additives (in case you're not familiar). Definitely not raw though. The package says it's baked at low temperatures but according to t

I've bought some great seeds at sproutpeople.com and HIGHLY recommend them. Their website also has really easy to follow sprouting directions and lots of other helpful info too. The oats, kamut and spelt I got at Whole Foods never sprouted properly, and the rye not at all...probably because they were just sitting in the bins too long. Stuff arrives in a few days too, which is nice. ~lani

maui_butterfly: I've been thinking of trying out triphala lately but have only seen it in tablet form at my local health food stores. Is the powder supposed to work better? Where do you buy yours from? Thanks! ~lanie

I had a colonic last year and the technician (or whatever you call them) doing the procedure HIGHLY recommended triphala for those very same digestive woes, which I also suffer from. Ultimately never tried it myself, for various unrelated reasons, but none of my own research after the fact produced any negatives on the product. So I say go for it...especially if it's helping you as much as it so

I barely shop there anymore. Just got fed up with their ever-dwindling supply of organic produce...even the ones in season!!! I know stores vary depending on location but at the one I go to here in San Francisco you couldn't even find one variety of organic tangerines this winter...not ONE. No pummelos, red or yellow bell peppers, parsnips and lots of other basics I can't think of right now ei

Thanks for your post Coco. I thought it was just me. Makes sense that they're slightly toxic as that's sort of how they taste. Don't know if you've ever tried sprouting soybeans but BLECHHH...they're even worse. Not a recommended legume to begin with from what I've learned anyway. With so many tasty nutritious foods to choose from leaving out the ones that don't sit well is definitely no

Wow. Kale, cabbage, and more kale. Seems like a lot of cruciferous fiber for one day, especially if you're new to raw. I've been eating predominantly plants for many years now and even I would have a hard time digesting all that in a day. Try not eating fruit and vegetables together in one meal and see if that helps. I know that my stomach is way unhappy whenever I use any fruit other th

I've sprouted chickpeas several times and always ended up throwing them out. They grow easy and look really good but leave a weird aftertaste in my mouth that kinda makes me nauseaus. To each his own I guess. I do enjoy lentil and mung bean sprouts though...in small quantities. ~lanie

I buy Madhava brand raw agave nectar, which you can get at most Whole Foods...as least the ones around here. It says "specially produced at temps below 115 f." right on the bottle, which I choose to believe is true. Now whether or not it actually is, couldn't say. Don't have the right lab equipment on hand to test that one out myself...as if I would even know how. (-: ~lanie

"Superfoods" usually have to be shipped long distances (i.e. Tibetan gojiberries), wasting very UNsuper amounts of precious resources, like petrol, and time. Here's a cute tongue-in-cheek description of superfoods that I think you'll appreciate: Superfoods Deconstructed Let’s deconstruct the notion of superfoods. What are the unwritten rules that determine whether something is

WOW...the Hippocrates Institute seems a bit much, no? And who in the heck wrote all those rules? Sounds like a bunch of nonsense if you ask me. So, if I don't follow their stringent food combining "rules" then my body "will soon wither and the bowels become impacted?" Double WOW. Pretty extreme claim there. I do know that eating too many fruits and veggies together up

<Why do you think its you that doing something wrong, rather than the carrots? > Bryan: It's because until I went raw I used to eat carrots all the time without turning orange. I thought there might be some nutritional deficiency in my diet that's preventing me from metabolizing the beta carotene. Guess I always assume it's me. I've been vegan for over decade but only about a yea

This might sound weird to you guys but I use parsnips to sweeten up my green smoothies. Adds a lovely, earthy flavor too...but only when they're in season. Other than the occasional one here or there, I'm not able to process carrots. Turn my hands orange for some reason. Am I doing something wrong you think? ~lanie

Well, don't go bananas over it for crissakes!!! (-: Between the pizza, pasta, ice cream, etc. surrounding you, I'd say you made a pretty decent choice. Nothing wrong with a little peanut butter and jelly now and then, if that's what you're body's really truly craving. For me if I'm non-stop super obsessing about something but keep depriving myself, eventually I'll just end up binging on wh

WOW...thanks for all the great feedback. I'm sure that as my digestive health improves things will even out and I'll be able to tolerate more of my favorite foods (i.e. broccoli) raw. At least, that's the plan. In the meantime, like was said, listening to what my body's telling me is a good first step. Lots of interesting info all around. You guys rock!!! ~lanie

Thanks rost0037. You make me feel a little less compulsive. I know there are no rules around here but I guess I just want to feel like I'm still getting good nutritional value out of food despite some of the steaming. Never heard about massaging kale but makes sense. Marinating's a really good idea too, which hadn't occur to me either for some strange reason. Think I'll give it a try for

What beautiful, eclectic, bounties we all eat. I was just thinking that if any of my family members could see this they'd think we were all wackos...ha ha...little do they know, right? Jury's still out on today but here's yesterday's fare: Breakfast: tangerines (4) apples (2) stawberries (lots and lots) black sesame seeds walnuts Lunch: sugar snap peas fennel asparagus brown

I totally get why food in its purest, whole, raw form is better for our bodies, and the earth too on a zillion levels. But is the damage done to VERY lightly steamed, oh say broccoli, for example, so great as to render it void of any nutritional value? I've been 90 to 95 percent raw, give or take, for going on a year now (and this after many, many as vegan) but still find it hard to eat a lo

WY: Correction, I actually use the sprouted kamut IN salads, etc., or just eat by the handful as is. The soaked ones make a really good side dish as well as cereal. Olive oil drizzle, pinch of pink crystal salt, garlic, maybe some cayene...fresh chopped parsley (or any herb you like) and it's good to go. You can do this with wheat, rye...any grain that tastes good to you really. ~lanie

WY: I use kamut two ways... As cereal, soaked overnight, then rinsed really, really well before eating. It gets chewy and moist, especially if you soak it for two days. Makes a wonderful breakfast when combined with nut or seed milk and fruit...to me at least. If you let it soak more than one day though keep it in the frig. Super important to rinse until the water's not cloudy anymore b

"Grain mills are available with two rollers that press the raw grains into flakes. The rolled grains soak very quickly, and have a nice texture. Just roll the grain, let it sit in a bowl with water unt
