For me, I ate about 1 tablespoon everyday of the cacao nibs for about 2 weeks before they really started making me sick to my stomach (very nauseous). I didn't eat the cacao again for about 3 months. But then one day recently I was trying to study for a test, and knowing the cacao contains caffein, I decided to try just one tablespoon to see if it would help me get through the chapter I was

You might consider getting your sunflower seeds and other seeds and nuts organic. The organic sunflower seeds are still pretty cheap. It's possible that toxic chemicals from conventional growing methods are concentrated in seeds and nuts. This is just a theory I have from my own experience. The last couple of times I ate NONorganic seeds and nuts (several years ago), I became VERY ILL, wi

It's probably true that protein deficiency does happen where people are starving, like in Somalia or Darfur, and maybe in cases of severe illness whenever people are unable to eat for long periods of time. But it seems also true that where there is food, there is protein. The whole idea of protein deficiency seems to have been made into an issue by the meat and dairy industry, and incorporate

Tofu (and most other soy products) is not a raw food, but IMO, it is a good vegan food (for a COOKED food that is). Dr. Mercola seems pretty extreme to me in his opposition to vegetarianism (let alone vegan or raw food vegan), so some of his information may possibly be a bit subjectively slanted. Tofu can be considered organic ONLY if it is labeled "organic" on the package. If not,

Dear Rozemarijn, Well since you said you didn't mind the advice... ,here's a few things that come to mind from your post: If you're feeling foggy, you may be going too far too quick on your detox. Fasting once a week should be OK, but if you do the fast, it might be too much right now to also "eat as little as possible" for the rest of the week. If you do the fast, then after yo

If you get the spirulina, you might want to avoid the spirulina FLAKES because they have a processed soy additive (or they used to). Just make sure to read the label. The powdered spirulina doesn't have the soy (again, check the label). I like spirulina a lot, but I quit eating it because it made me constipated. I personally prefer dulse and nori. Best wishes, Ally

If you can find a VEGAN nutritionist, that might be helpful. I did that once many years ago. I informed the nutritionist I wanted to eat only raw vegan foods, and the advice she gave me then is still helpful today. Best wishes, -Ally

Oops, In my last post, beginning of the 4th paragraph, I meant "a regimen that INCLUDES ONLY unsprouted nuts and seeds...in my opinion is not conducive towards steady maintenance of raw." Sorry. But I probably said enough that you got my meaning. -Ally

That's such a good question Khale. In the past I've pretty much stayed away from soaking my seeds and never soaked my nuts, mainly because of time and flavor. I like the crunchier seeds and nuts, with the burst of seed oil flavor when they're unsoaked. Lately though I'm considering soaking SOME seeds just to bring down the fat content, since they're less fatty when they're soaked. Perhaps

Hi ShineOn, Don't feel bad. Probably almost everybody on this forum has been right where you're at right now, maybe many times. I have - in my sordid past . The thing to do is look at it as a learning experience. You can think about what made you do it. And what you can do to prevent it in the future, or make it less bad. And it's not always just you. There may have been something lacking

Dear Piano Gal, Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I have learned so much from the wonderful people on this forum! About the post where I mentioned the 4:00 thing, it was really my intention to be referring to water fasting. 4:00 is the time when I'm most tempted to eat something and break a fast (All the little excuse thoughts jump right up). Your information is very interesting

I was just wondering what with all the trouble in the world, and the US and other countries still being so dependent on oil supplies for transporting food, are people thinking about what they would do if for any reason the food supplies were interrupted? Hurricane Katrina did that in New Orleans, so we know it's possible. Do people on the forum have a plan of action? Does anyone store food at

Djactchi, It definitely comes from the unsprouted wheat seeds. I just now found an article on this very web site called "Enzymes and Longevity". It is an interview with Dr. Edward Howell, the enzyme pioneer, and he states that raw wheat germ does contain the inhibitors and is "one of the worst offenders" for inhibiting enzyme activity, and he goes on to say that all nuts

Rozemarijn, Regarding the fasting, I find that when I fast, 4:00 is almost always the time of day that it's most difficult to get past. I don't know why that is. But I know what you're saying. If you just get on past 4:00 a ways, it's a little easier again. On days when you fast, although you may not feel like doing nearly as much of whatever needs to get done, it may turn out that wit

For us it seems sometimes we just don't know if the meat will be hard or soft until we open it. The harder meat is just as OK to eat as the softer meat, though it is of course richer in calories and fat. What we usually do is give the harder meat to the doggies (they love it) and eat the spooners ourselves. If you get one with no meat, well then it was just too young. The main thing eit

Hi ShineOn, Regarding the raw wheat germ: Yes it's still wheat, and I believe it does have gluton. So if you're gluton sensitive, it might not be right for you. I don't have that kind of sensitivity. My sensitivities mostly have to do with cooked food. The wheat germ doesn't bother me in any way that I'm aware of. But for me it definitely takes the place of my favorite cooked grains,

Hi djatchie, Well, maybe it's up to us. . I'm shooting for 120, and I plan on doing marathons (at least walking them) into my 90s. I'll never get that old sitting around playing with this computer though!!!!! . Oh, and Scott Nearing died the day after he turned 100 I believe. Best wishes, -Ally

Rawrr, I love your name! You might want to check your multivitamin and see if it contains B12. If it does, you probably don't need an additional B12 supplement. Check that with your doctor. No worries about where you're at with the dairy. A good book on the anti-dairy side though is "Diet for a New America", by John Robbins, heir to the Baskin-Robbins ice cream chain. For m

Gosia, Thanks for your post. The idea of eating insects doesn't appeal to me either. And milk and dairy: Yuck! There was a time when I enjoyed pizza, lasagne, and macaroni and cheese. But now it all reminds me of snot. And I remember my parents making me eat meat. I remember just chewing and chewing and chewing to try to get it to go down. Oh torture. But I liked the more easily chewab

Hi Brome, I don't quite get it. The picture on the left says he's 100 years old, but the bio on the right says he was born during World War II "under a Piscean sky". Since World War II started in September 1939, and he's a Pisces, he couldn't have been born any earlier than 1940. That would make him 66 years old at the most. 66 actually sounds about right because I remember r

Congratulations on being raw! I'm not sure, but I think the sprouted nuts are not so high in fat as unsprouted nuts. Same with the sprouted chick peas. You might find it helpful to go to www.nutritiondata.com and check on the foods you eat to see how much of the essential nutrients you are getting. Besides being able to check out the individual food for each essential nutrient, you can

Hey Shine-on, I was just rereading your post, "cooked food relapse", and I noticed that the day you said you relapsed, you didn't mention eating any nuts or seeds. Just in case you don't ever eat nuts or seeds, maybe you should try doing that and see if it will help. Best wishes, Ally

Gosia, Hm, that statement from the article, the one that says 100 grams of beans, beets, carrots and peas would give us half the minimum daily requirement of B12, really to me puts the whole article in doubt. How can anyone say something like that, so cut and dried, if there isn't a nutritional chart to back it up? Or is there a nutritional chart that differs with the USDA on this? But,

Gosia, Very interesting article! I have to differ with the writer on 2 points. First, her assertion that people mistakenly think they are healing after taking a B12 supplement because they feel a stimulating rush, is just untrue - at least for me. I never felt anything at all when taking the supplements. The reason I thought I was healing was that my feet and hands stopped tingling, and th

Basia, I have a wrecked digestive system too; but with me, I can't hardly digest anything but raw. Just wondering if you've tried raw wheat germ (I'm always saying this!). You can put it on your salads (about 1/4 cup or so) or sprinkle it on a raw nori wrap with lettuce, avo, etc. It tastes very good. It's an old time body-builer's food. If you do get some, make sure you get it prepac
