I just kind of thought I'd post this as a sort of spin-off to the post called "Too Much Fruit". I hope I can do this without hurting anyone's feelings. It's hard sometimes to disagree or debate in a genteel manner. Please believe I mean no harm. In my own experience, if I eat more than a couple of salads a week, I feel bad. So I usually eat just that amount and no more. Fruit

Dear shep252, I would assume raw wheat germ would have at least a slight acid affect, but I'm not really sure. Anyone else know the answer to shep's question? Best wishes, -Ally

Dear Healthybun, According to www.celiac.com, "Most sprouted wheat still has gluten or gluten peptides remaining. Although the sprouting begins enzymatic action that starts to break down the gluten (a storage protein for the plant) into peptides and even amino acids. Generally this is not a complete process for sprouts used in foods so some active peptides (active in celiac disease) rema

Anyone who thinks milking other animals is natural should try milking a WILD animal and see what happens! (Just kidding! Don't try it. Really!)

Make sure you buy it prepackaged labeled "raw" and not from the bin where it can be rancid. I like it a lot on salads, but now I prefer sprouted wheat. I soak the wheatberries overnight, and then rinse them at least a couple of times a day and let them drain. I do that for one or two days after soaking them. They're great added to salads and nori wraps (with avocado or olive oil and

Sorry if my last post seemed a bit too blunt. I probably would have edited it, but I didn't have time, since I had to get off the computer. I do think Brian is right that on a raw food vegan forum, the raw food vegans shouldn't have to defend their choice to be vegan; they should have one forum to go to where they feel comfortable and can discuss their vegan choice with like-minded individual

Thank you Brian! And I'm like Lillianswan. I'm a vegan first and a raw foodist second. If people on this board are not vegans, that's fine. Please don't be sensitive about it when you hear us vegans be passionate about our compassion for animals. For us that is real, and it doesn't mean we think we're better than you. When you raw foodists who are not vegans are discussing your di

Thank you Mike Snyder for all the info from Gabriel Cousins. I was beginning to question my own decision to supplement with B12, but after reading your info, I went and ate my methylcobalamin B12 supplement. It's hard for vegans - raw or not - to come to terms with the idea that they might need to supplement with B12. After all, God rewards compassion (including not eating meat), and mos

Yawn? C'mon sodoffsocks. Arugula deserves credit for compassion. That's real and it's good. We humans could use a lot more of it. My husband has been vegan for over 20 years, and the main reason with him is not health. It's compassion. I love him for it. (He doesn't take any B12 though. He does eat a lot of yeast)

I think a raw food vegan diet is good for people, and helps them develop compassion. As far as a raw food vegan diet "fixing" ME, I probably have to work just as hard on what comes out of my mouth as on what goes into it! Best wishes, Ally

I agree with arvydas about selective growing. Grafting trees takes selective growing a step further, and I think we humans are really messing up by grafting so many of our fruit trees. Commercially grown fruit trees, including commercially organic, are almost all grafted. That way growers know exactly what kind of fruit they'll get. The ungrafted trees (grown from seed) of many varieties of f

To fruitlux, I believe it's possible to be a healthy 100% raw vegan. I've been 100% vegan for 20 years next month, and it's been a lot easier to forever give up meat and dairy than to forever give up cooked food. I believe it takes a considerable amount of experimentation to be a successful 100% raw vegan. I know several long-term cooked food vegans, some of them longer-term vegan than m

I eat sunflower seeds for iron. I agree with arugula. You can go to www.nutritiondata.com. You can use the tools available to search by nutrient (in this case iron), or you can try searching different foods (see search tool upper right on the home page). If you search by nutrient, you can search by nutrient content/200 calories or nutrient content/100 grams. I find it more informative to

I eat sunflower seeds to get enough iron. You can go to www.nutritiondata.com and try searching different foods to see how much iron they supply (see the search tool at the top right of the home page). Best wishes, -Ally

Whole Foods was born in Austin. You might check their salad bars, and you might ask their manager if he/she knows of a raw food restaurant. There used to be one a long time ago, but I don't know about now. There might be several. Best wishes, -Ally

Whenever possible, IMO local organic is best. If not local organic, then organic. Too bad it's expensive (not the grower's fault). Best wishes, -Ally

Just 1/4 cup of UNhulled sesame seeds contains 351 mg of calcium, more calcium than a whole glass of milk (276mg)! Also, an orange contains 72 mg of calcium, so if a person eats 4 oranges a day, that's 288 mg of calcium. 1 whole head of romaine lettuce has 207 mg of calcium. 1 cup of kale has 137 mg, and 1 cup of collards has 52 mg. I agree with thehulaqueen. Dr. Joel Fuhrman, MD is considered a leader in therapeutic fasting, and in fact was inspired to enter medical school after his own 46 day fast at Dr. Shelton's Health School. According to Dr. Fuhrman, in his book, FASTING AND EATING FOR HEALTH, "Ketosis develops within 48 hours in fasting females and 72 hours in males....As the level of ketones rises in the b

It's very possible you will lose weight once you begin your workouts again. For me, unless I stay really hungry all the time, I tend to gain weight on 100% raw when I'm not running. Best wishes, -Ally

Of course it's not good to overeat, but for me, a boat load of raw food has always been better than a tiny bit of cooked food. For one thing, a tiny bit of cooked food - especially starch - seems to always give me a ROOOOOAAAAARING appetite, and I end up eating more than I'd originally intended. Steamed vegetables don't set me off like that, but I now eat enough raw veggies and raw seaweeds

Dear rawproject, Nuts and seeds can be really important in a raw food diet. IMO it's important to know that they supply a lot more than just fat. A very small quantity of nuts and seeds supplies a very huge quantity of magnesium. I found the highest quantity of mangesium in hemp seeds. According to the USDA label on the package of Nutiva organic shelled hempseed, JUST 2 TABLESPOONS (1/8

Good one Funky Rob! I'd just like to add that when you go to the Nutrient Search tool page, at the bottom you will see you have the choice of searching "based on levels per 100-gram serving" or "based on levels per 220-calorie serving". You might try searches based on the grams as well as based on the calories. Also, in addition to searching the fruit category and the ve

To butterfly imagines, et al, IMO there's 2 reasons why people CRAVE cooked foods. One is that they might need more diversity in their raw food diet to be able to get enough of all the essential nutrients. The other is just simply that they have the HABIT of eating those foods. For example, if it's a deficiency thing, a craving for CHEESE could (possibly) mean a deficiency in calcium.

HI innervegetable, As you probably already know from a previous post, our main raw food project here is growing and caring for nearly a thousand fruit trees. I always thought the classic fruitarian books were the Arnold Ehret books: Rational Fasting, Mucousless Diet Healing System, and Thus Speaketh the Stomach. My impression is that Arnold Ehret believed the fruitarian (fruit only) diet was the ultimate. After reading his books, I believed in the fruitarian diet so strongly myself, that I worked towards it for many years and finally moved to Hawa
