Just wanted to say that's cute that your child is doing that. I love it! Little treehugger! More people should be like your kid. -DaveK p.s. Plant a tree today! p.p.s. No, wait! Have a kid that plants trees! Even better!

oh! I happen to have fresh basil too. The only thai sauce I have is peanut sauce, obviously not raw. (But oohhh so good. I always have it on hand). -DaveK

I was just talking to somebody at work about it, and she said "Well, just bring it to work then!" So maybe that's what I'll do. We don't have cats here! -DaveK

Thanks, just found the thread: I just read on a list that they could be toxic to cats. So now I'm worried about that. I don't know *how* toxic - deadly toxic or sick toxix. My cats reaaaly like to eat plants. That's somewhat prevented by the catgrass I grow for them. I could always hang it or something maybe.

It's supposed to not be too difficult to do. At minimum this would make a nice houseplant I think, getting fruit would be great though. Anyone here try this? -DaveK Oh, and PS. I live in an apartment, so I'm talking container growing here.

Somebody here recommended a snack made from nuts ground together with dates. I did this in my food processor with soaked nuts. No oil or anything. The stuff it made was GOOD. I don't know if it'd qualify as "butter" but it was spreadable! I put it on celery and it was fantastic.

I have a bunch of mint for a recipe that called for a little. Besides making tea, anybody have any neat ideas for it? (I'm also chewing on it becuase of the over-oniony lettuce wraps I tried to make yesterday!) Here is the recipe it was for BTW, though it's probably a standard for you veterans as far as I know: Some kind of soup: 1 avacado 1 cucumber mint leaves Put in a food proces

Yup, I got it too. If I wasn't lazy I'd actually respond to it and follow up until I got the name of the person, then report him. But..I'm lazy. {hits delete button} -DaveK

Yes Nessi! That is how I look at it! And not only did the food came back, but the short time I spent there was so beneficial that I have so much gratitude. What I gave came back so many times that I'm still trying to find ways to give to the monastery (I might transcribe some talks for them!) In all the retreats I have done they really make a big deal out of eating. It's so important to un

Hi Folks. I just got back from my time at the monastery. There was really no way to eat all raw, but the food was still very good. The not eating after noon didn't bother me at all since I haven't been eating much anyway lately (since my master cleanse). The place runs strictly on donations, so it was very humbling that some of the food I brought in (from a list on the site of what they

Just a note here - be careful people. If people have had positive results with dry fasting, good for them. But I think people should work from their own experience, not dietary dogma. Being dehydrated is not good for most people. I can not go more than a few hours without liquid with out very ill effects, dry mouth, hoarse voice, headaches, and oh yeah - thirst. These aren't "detox"

I only saw this commercial once (I hope I didn't dream about it) about some kind of new bag that some lady is selling on TV. It's supposed to keep stuff fresher longer. It has to do with the way the chemicals that produce emits and how it reacts with the lining of the bags. It was during one of those daytime yenta shows that was on when I was sick from work. I haven't seen the commercial si

I just bought some lundberg Wehani brown rice. It looks to me like it just came off the plant! Not sure what to look for on the packaging to indicate this but it looks pretty raw to me.Is this soakable/sproutable? Er, if so, then what? I didn't really have a plan when I bought it. -DaveK

I just ate a fairly nutty lunch at around 1:30. (Some ground up soaked nuts and dates spread onto celery) so I think I'm going to go the rest of today and see what happens. Tomorrow I'll be getting to the monastery after they've already eaten the second meal so I better make sure I eat!

Well the first meal is at 7:00am and the second is at 11:15. The residents and monastics eat like this every day, and they say you get used to it after the first few days. I'm just wondering if there will be enough raw stuff in those first two meals to keep me going or if I might have to eat whatever else they have. Not that I have a problem with that, but I am trying to get some momentum goin

ANGIE!! I just did your recipe! It worked with the dates I have, BUT instead of making them into caramel like things (which was great) I put them on celery! And the nuts I had were walnuts with some hazelnuts mixed in, all soaked. MMMM

I hope so Angie. It'd be nice if that trend came along with an "honesty and integrity" trend. This looks more like a trend of disingenuous marketing strategies aimed at people who want to live healthier. I think the people on this forum are the type that tend to do their own research about nutrition and the products that are out there, but I think that represents a minority. Most

Thanks! I'll have to try that little snack. I have been having hard time finding dates. (um... the edible kind...um..the edible fruit kind) The only ones I could find were packaged and I'm suspicious about how much they were processed. The package says that they were "sun dried and moistened." What the hell does that mean? Oh well. Dates do seem to be popping up in a lot of th

I'm sure different places do it differently. Mostly water or some kind of juice. One place even said soft drinks (ugh!). The purpose has to do with monastic rules going back to the Buddha's original community, where meals were gathered by going out on alms rounds. Since this was time consuming the practice was restricted to twice a day - morning and before noon. The rule has been kept in

Thanks Sapphire. I did take a look at those recipes in there. It's amazing what people have come up with. I'll have to add that one to my little file here. Yesterday's breakfast was: banana a stalk of ceery 6 dates some nuts (I had soaked) all chopped up. It was good but too much celery. I had the same thing today with half a stalk and it was better. For dinner I tried to make

So I will be spending 3 days at a Buddhist monastery this week, and in the Theravadan tradition, they do not eat after noon. Today is my third day on a raw diet after the master cleanse, and I dont' have much of an urge to eat much anyway. (And feel great) So I think I'll be ok. Yesterday I had two very light meals the whole day. One was at about 10 am and the other about 5:00pm. I wasn't

Alisa Cohen's site has a listing of teachers all over the place who can give classes. You can even get certified, but I don't think the expectation is that you'll work in a resturaunt. You can do it for yourself. Here's the locator:

Not to completely defend places that take money, but I think it is very hard to run off donations only. I'll be curious to see how Bhavana functions at all with donations only. I think what you're really seeing is the difference between a secularized, urban, "insight meditation" movement as opposed to a community of Theravadan Buddhists, who live their lives wholly immersed in the pra

I'm on my first day of all raw after the master cleanse. This is my third cleanse. The cleanse really prepares you for it by getting you through the initial detox phases in a shorter period of time then if you just go to all raw or even gradually go into raw. After the cleanse everything tastes better too, so you dont' *need* to go eat junk in order to enjoy eating. The first piece of solid
