I live in a row house in Baltimore City, Maryland, USA.. Had a small garden here in the backyard years ago, but cannot now due to constraints imposed upon me by the owner..Look up some of my older posts for a description of this garden.. In my neighborhood tree fruits don't grow particularly well..This is due to improper air drainage & the fact that 55 years ago the row houses facing on

A lot of the fruits that are available for purchase in our grocery stores originated in areas of the planet that are cold.. Apples, pears, cherries, kiwis, & grapes for example, need a certain number of hours / days where the tree, bush, or vine is exposed to weather below 32 degrees Fahrenheit over the course of the winter in order to flower & properly set fruit..Even better is if sno

Sorry to chime in here, I hope you don't mind.. Most modern fruits & vegetables, including heirlooms, need some level of care from humans..They often bear little resemblance to their wild ancestors.. The history of agriculture has been to only keep those seeds from the present year's crop that exhibit the best characteristics in taste, size, resistance to diseases, etc..As a result of &

Most modern corns are hybrids that have been enhanced to be sweeter than nature intended..Once picked, the sugars in the kernals (seeds) of a ripe ear of the heirloom corns & the older hybrid corns (up to about the mid-1980's) immediately begin turning to starches..Which was why people in the old days strove to eat corn as soon after it was picked as possible..The very high sugar content corn

On it's surface, bamboo seems to be the ideal choice for cutting boards.. Every single one of the 7 people that I've personally spoken to that had purchased one of these bamboo boards reported problems with the boards falling apart due to the glue bonds failing..In only two of the cases were the boards put into a dishwasher, a total no-no for glued up wood cutting boards..It's the main reason

Glass is the worst type of cutting board..They are fragile & will instantly dull ANY knife, even ceramic ones..They might be the most sanitary, because of their virtually non-porous grain structure & their ability to be washed in a dishwasher, but this is an overrated quality.. Plastic cutting boards were first created in order to combat the prevalent idea of the 1970's that wood was l

la_veronique The Tracker School, like much of modern life, exists as a dichotomy..On the one hand, Tom Brown was taught & inspired by Stalking Wolf as a child, teenager, & young man to have the aboriginal skills of an Apache warrior & medicine man..As a part of his spiritual journey he feels compelled to pass on as much of this knowledge as he can to as many people as possible..

sewraw Like I mentioned in my above post, I have put as little as 2 medium romaine leaves into a very large smoothie with the first taste resulting in a negative reaction from my brain as the smell registered.. Perhaps I have a more acute sense of smell than I thought I possessed, but I can definitely smell the chlorophyll in the drink from the blending process..And at least to my brain, th

DaveK You are correct in that virtually all of the books & therefore the classes being taught are based on the premise of killing animals for food.. 100,000 years of humans killing animals for food has pretty much led to that being the norm.. Because of the ease of mis-identification when it comes to teaching someone how to recognize & safely obtain wild plants for food this aspe

Lisa I generally use some combination of at least 3-5 choices of strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, apples, pears, oranges, grapefruit, bananas, pineapple, plums, peaches, nectarines, papaya, & mango in my smoothies..With 16-24 ozs. of filtered water..Usually makes about 48-50 ozs. of smoothie.. Learning survival skills in order to forage for plants is kinda overkill..There are many foraging classes taught all over the USA that would address that need.. Learning survival skills in order to survive an extended period of time in the "wilderness" where your equipment is limited or non-existent is another scenario entirely.. A true survival situation calls first for shelter,

Lisa Even 1-2 leaves of romaine lettuce in a 48 plus ounce smoothie consisting mostly of fruit smells "BAD" to me.. EZ rider The one thing that I've not yet tried is a smoothie that consists completely of greens..It feels counter-intuitive to me, when even the smallest amounts of greens in a primarily fruit smoothie are triggering my gag reflex..The next time I shop I'll be purchas

I'm just curious as to the consistency of the smoothies that long-term smoothie drinkers make??.. How runny or thick do you prefer your smoothies to be??..Do you find it easier or more difficult to consume a particular amount of smoothie depending on it's thickness??..How much smoothie by volume do you usually consume at a meal??..Do you follow smoothie drinking with any water??.. Any sugge

I think that what is bothering me about the video, as arugula, fresh, & several others have alluded to, is the more or less unscientific way that the information in the video is presented.. First, anyone that is in business to sell anything, anywhere, anytime, anyhow, has an agenda..Generally speaking, that agenda will ALWAYS be to promote & therefore sell, whatever products & or s

I'm very interested in the responses to this thread.. As per my last post on the Root Cellar thread, I too have been giving serious consideration to moving to a warmer climate where year round gardening is a reality.. I think that my current depression & my difficulties on a raw vegan diet can be traced back to the day years ago that I gave up my organic garden.. There is something p

There are not very many organic seed companies based in the eastern USA..The ones listed above are among the few..Most seeds are grown out west where fungal diseases are less prevalent, thus these companies tend to be west of the Mississippi.. If I may be so bold as to ask, "What's the hurry?"..Seed purchasing is something that's generally done before the spring planting season begin

Root cellars work best in the temperate climatic regions of both the northern & southern hemispheres..In the tropics there is a year round growing season pretty much eliminating the need for long-term food storage..Being willing to eat seasonally is the only prerequisite for living in the tropics.. Root cellars, & the implications of a raw vegan consuming the kinds of foods that are ca
