Dilute concentrations of either bleach or vinegar are recommended to neutralize the organo phosphate compounds sprayed onto our fruits & vegetables in the form of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, etc..Rinse off any soil, soak them for 10-15 minutes in the dilute concentration, rinse well, dry off, & consume.. Both bleach & acetic acids (vinegars) are corrosive substances..Bleach

sprout The Benriner horizontal turning slicer has blades that are approximately 50% thicker than does the vertical slicer..This means that the prongs on the julienne blades are much less prone to bending..The horizontal slicer will accommodate a larger diameter piece of veg so that more end product can be produced before needing to insert a new piece..The horizontal slicer has a longer throw w

Oshinn There are superfine wire mesh cones with handles called chinoise..The better ones are all stainless steel with a triple wire mesh & SS rods reinforcing the outsides of the mesh for protection..Most are made in France, as was the one I purchased from Bridge Kitchenware years ago.. Unfortunately they are not inexpensive, costing approximately $100.00..All good restaurants use these

Yeah, the main drawback of the Excalibur dehydrators is the noise pollution that they produce..And, I don't find it that easy to clean the inside of my 9-tray model.. Back in the late 1970's I saw a wooden dehydrator assembled from a kit at a Mormon friend's home that was constructed from various thicknesses of cabinet-grade plywood..It was significantly quieter than the Excalibur.. The out

angie 1 Your recipe seems fine to me.. I always advocate adding the frozen fruits at the end of the blending cycle, AFTER all of the other ingredients have been pureed..This puts the LEAST amount of stress on the blender's motor..If before adding the frozen fruit to the already pureed mixture, you see that the mixture is very thick, I would recommend adding additional liquid before adding t

beet-mama The Vita-Prep 3 currently provides me with ALL the features that I need in a blender..I do not anticipate my needs changing to the point that I would need a more powerful blender..Or one with different controls..I'm a hands on kind of guy, so the Blend Tec blender with it's computerized controls has no appeal for me.. The only circumstances that I could ever foresee that might cau

Both glass & ceramics have a crystalline grain structure which could theoretically lead to chipping.. Or breakage.. That being said, the glass carafe on the Oster Osterizer blender was as tough as it needed to be..Which is to say that I have read of extremely few instances in where a hard food placed into one of these carafes led to it chipping or breaking when the hard food was being blen

beet-mama Cavitation equals aeration of the food in the carafe..Air equals oxidation..Oxidation equals the breakdown in the enzyme content of the raw food in question.. So the less cavitation the better..That being said, all blenders cavitate to one degree or another..For a blender to work properly it must create a vortex..Vortexes have air in them..It's the nature of the beast.. WY The Vita-Prep 3 is one of the best kitchen tools that I have ever owned..Easily in the top 5 tools, hand or electric, that I have used professionally or purchased for my own use in the home..Properly used & cared for it should give several decades of use.. I hate to sound like I'm beating a dead horse again, but I do not feel that the following points can be made often enough.. On

Without getting into another long post, let me say that food processors are even less suited to making frozen banana ice cream then are high-powered blenders..Food processors were NEVER intended to process frozen foods of any kind..Short of putting stones in the bowl, frozen foods dull the blades quicker than do ANY other foods..A food processor ABSOLUTELY depends upon the blades being sharp in o

Be careful with frozen chunks of ANYTHING, especially large chunks of dense fruits.. A 1" chunk of frozen banana is probably 50 times more difficult to blend then the same size piece of ice..

La Pieta Sorry I took so long to respond to your request for info on a manual nut grinder..I somehow skipped over your post, & read the ones after it.. I am unaware of any manual grinder that handles both nuts & seeds..To my knowledge a manual nut only grinder along the lines of a seed or meat grinder does not exist..At least I have never encountered one..That is not to say that one

robinbird I own & occasionally use an Excalibur 9-tray dehydrator.. My main issue with it is the noise pollution that it creates..Because the machine is basically a hollow plastic box the noise that the fan makes is magnified by echoing within the dehydrator..As well as the noise that the trays make rattling.. The majority of the recipes that I have executed with it took no less then

geekinthehood The major problem that I have with any type of supplement powder that significantly thickens a smoothie during the short time that it is being blended is this: If it is thickening a smoothie in the 30-60 seconds that it is being blended, then it MUST be absorbing the liquid in the smoothie.. And if it's absorbing the liquid in the smoothie, then by design it must also be ab

geekinthehood My experience, & that of the friends and acquaintances that have owned Vita-Mix blenders is the exact opposite of la_veronique's.. I was born into a family of artisans, mechanics, good cooks, & people who generally unders

bobati The answer to your questions is no.. Food processors ARE NOT blenders, nor are they juicers.. Blenders blend..Juicers juice..And food processors slice, shred, & process food..The absolute

geekinthehood I'll recap briefly some points that I've made in previous posts, although for more complete info I'd suggest going into search mode & finding my earlier posts.. First, by moving up to the Vita-Prep 3 you will be purchasing a motor that is designed for continuous everyday usage in juice bars, restaurants, by caterers, etc..A better motor then is spec'd in the 4000 & 500

veggiefreak I am perhaps not the best person to advise you on the green smoothie vs. green juices path..The following will further explain.. High-powered blender (Blend Tec, returned, didn't like it --then

La Pieta I have never used a single or twin-screw juicer to homogenize nuts or seeds..I do not own a juicer of either type..From what I know of these machines it would seem to be a lot of work to clean them compared to a food processor..Perhaps the owners of these types of juicers will chime in with an opinion as to your question.. Yes, small hand crank seed mills can be used to grind flax

La Pieta Yes, all Vita-Mix blenders can be equipped with a dry mix container for an additional cost.. I personally do not own the dry mix container for my Vita-Prep 3..From dozens of posts that I have read on various forums the consensus seems to be that while the dry container WILL process grains (what it was designed for) better then will the wet container that comes standard with all Vit

WY Any appliance that is rated exactly at or near to (18 amps plus) 20amps, will be best served by being plugged into a 30 amp circuit.. Such appliances WILL work & run fine on a 20 amp circuit, as long as they are not being used at their maximum rated capacity..It is when the appliance is drawing it's full 20 amps that trouble can & will occur..As soon as the appliance draws enough

Some points that I wish to make that I've been dancing around in regards to this thread's topic of proper blender & food processor usage, & longevity are this: My grandmother, who turned 104 in late November 2007; was born into, & lived the majority of her life in an era where TIME was the major component of kitchen life..In other words, it was an accepted fact of life that whateve
