Here's a joke that is meant to be heard instead of read. (I am infamous for not telling jokes well, so why not expand my notoriety to the internet?) Here goes... A piece of rope goes into a bar and orders a drink. The bartender says, "I can't serve you. You are just a piece of rope." The rope goes outside and wriggles and turns and flops over until one end is over its middle m

Just reporting back that things are going well again after my yelling episode and I am back to feeling positive about how I am healing. Actually, very positive. The GERD thread in the category "Other Health Related Topics - Not Related to Living and Raw Foods," is placed wrong because living and raw foods are exactly what GERD (or acid reflux) is related to! I wasn't sure whe

Plainly Dressed, I seems that you may be feeling criticized and that's unfortunate. However, I think there has been a miscommunication that started with a transcription error of the recipe amounts in the beginning and that led to a lot of miscommunication. Look back to your very first posting and you'll see that the quantity of oil was given as "Ingredients: One cup walnuts One

Vinny, The image you posted of your precious kitty snoozing in that adorable pose says it all. What a charmer he was! It is very understandable that it is hard for you, especially with him being so young. We know it is a big loss and hear your pain. Also, although you may encounter people who advise you to move on and get over it, taking time to grieve and remember is valid and worthwh

Here are 10 (of the infinite number of) things I am grateful for: 1. Having a mother who has always heard a different drummer and who has always believed in me 2. The closeness to town and seclusion of Otarawairere beach where nothing manmade can be seen and White Island can be seen puffing away on the horizon 3. Fruit trees!!! 4. Kind people 5. The paradox of being able to learn, change and

Here's an FYI for everyone. There are people who need LESS iron in their diet but don't know it. Hemochromatosis is one of the most common genetic conditions. It is also called "iron overload" because the body absorbs up to four times the normal amount of iron. Humans don't have a natural way of getting rid of extra iron. In people with hemochromatosis, eventually the extra iron

Whoa! That much fat would do anyone in. I see why you haven't tried it yet! (You omitted the onion, but I get your point anyway.)

You are trying to do what is the best in a difficult situation. As long as you are honest and loving and have good intentions, they will know that on some level. Keep as positive and happy as you can - for them and yourself. Best wishes....

Training with many repetitions using light weights is great for building muscle. You may want to check out a site like fitday.com where you can enter the foods you eat in a day and see how many calories and how much protein you are getting. Good luck in your explorations!

I'm not sure what purple chard is, but if it's the same as Swiss chard, I put some in my food processor and shred it into tiny bits. Then I mix it with other shredded, chopped or sliced vegetables, toss it all with a salad dressing and put it on a bed of mixed lettuce greens or wrap it in a lettuce leaf. That way I get some of the goodness of such a dark green without getting too much of a good

Here's an update on acid reflux.... For a week or so after I quit taking my prescription for acid reflux around the beginning of October, I wasn't sure I was doing the right thing, but I felt about the same as I did when I was taking it (i.e., very mild throat discomfort) and continued. Gradually, I started feeling better - normal, even. I was waiting for one month to declare victory, but have h

Woo hoo! I have not had any allergic reactions to any food since I started raw a few months ago. I decided to risk eating kiwifruit, which I had reactions to a couple of times - and no problem. Not having allergies to food is such a fabulous bonus, I am giddy. I was so encouraged that I decided to try my food nemesis - raw pineapple. I hadn't eaten it since childhood. I tried a little. No pro

The best parenting advice I ever got was to "catch them being good" which meant to praise children accurately for any and all of the good qualities and behaviors they show. Load it on heavy. Be very specific and sincere. It works wonders!!! Soon it'll feel very natural and easy to do. Everyone makes mistakes, but trying to be better shows that you are a good mum. Congratulation

Yep, there are people who don't listen (or don't want to listen) to what raw food is about. It seems somewhat narrow-minded and self-centered to not even listen, but it's their choice. Fine, I can accept that. I just have to be a broken record, saying, "No, thanks," or "Is there a piece of fruit?" My aggravation is people who are overtly critical and try to humiliate wit

Instead of thinking badly of you, I think just the opposite. It takes great strength to face the truth when others around you are denying it. I also admire your openness and appreciate your trust to share how you feel with us. Of course everyone is focused on your mother and what they believe her needs are, but it is so easy for caregivers and loved ones to get physically and emotionally de

Hee hee, my husband has started asking me if he could have some of what I'm making for myself. This morning it was green ginger lemonade. For lunch it was raw baba ganoush. When I first started eating raw foods, I gave him "samples" of things I thought he'd like and I'd always served him some of my salad with his meal. But to have him ask for raw things tickles me pink.

I haven't had chapped lips in years, but do now. It's not because of cold weather, because it's spring and getting warmer in NZ. When I check on fitday.com my fat intake is usually around 8%. Could it be that I should increase my fat intake?

Raw baba ganoush is yummy. I had it for lunch today wrapped in lettuce leaves. I've seen recipes for it on a few sites.

928. Ginger
Is the root of the ginger plant that is in gardens the same as the ginger root sold in groceries? I know where there is a lot of ginger growing wild. Since it's considered an invasive pest plant here, I thought that if they are the same, I could do a good deed by getting rid of it and save money too.

At this point you believe steamed and steam-fried food loses some of it's nutrients, but is still very good to maintain health and you find it impractical to avoid cooking/eating rice in Cambodia. While your food choices sound "quite healthy" for a vegan diet, at some point you may want to try a completely raw vegan diet and compare for yourself. It is smart of you to read and study (

I always make a glorious mess when eating a pomegranate, so when (a while back) I saw Martha Stewart de-seed one sooooo easily, I decided to give it a try. I scored it with a knife and hit it with a spoon the way I remembered her doing. My result was much splatting and very few seeds. Hmmm, wrong end? I tried with another pomegranate, cutting from the other end. Again, much splatting and very
