I am told my cashews are raw, but then I was always taught that raw cashews are toxic unless "sundried," whatever that means, and also very difficult to peel without steaming or blanching the pods. In India and Brazil(where they originate)the nuts are always dried and then processed otherwise. I'd ask wherever you shop for them if they can tell you where the nuts are from and whether

"The way to steer your raw journey is by steering your shopping cart." I smell a bumper sticker, EZ! For everyone else that isn't raw, it could read, "The way to steer your life is by steering your shopping cart." byHIShands, I think the important thing is to not fall prey to self-flagellation. Beating yourself up about slipping back into old habits isn't helpful.

willows101, I've eaten sprouted beans, and haven't had digestion problems with them; I just don't like the taste of many. Those mentioned by Brian, above, are good, but be aware that they don't taste like their cooked unsprouted form. Sprouted raw mung beans with raw coconut meat and water pureed together, raw ginger and galangal, lime juice, red chile, agave, and shredded cabbage, onion, an

Hey, Suvine, Sounds like your 2008 New Year's["drunk guys from outer space with a lot of money trying to pick me up"--I DO love an astronaut!]was a memorable one! Went to bed early, after but a thimbleful of organic mead, feeling achy and woke up this morning feeling dead. I'm thinking my body wants me to go all raw this year, so that's my goal. And, truth be told, I am too much

baltochef! I agree with you on most of your points, but my feeling is that: a.) just because a civilization is old doesn't mean its tenets are inherently noble and thus respectable. and b.) I can make a logical distinction between a sentient animal that suffers horrible psychic agonies upon its death and the bloodless act of eating a broccoli floret. That plant is important to the eco

liberation Colin, I'm glad you are back on the boards. I wish you peace and wellness. I eat hand-harvested seaweed, mostly for therapeutic value, and am thankful that I cannot stomach large amounts due to its pungency. I am wondering, given the nature of some of your posts, whether you aren't tending toward Jainsim? There is doing little damage, and then there is doing imperceptible dam

Great advice from DZM, as usual! I would also add two things: 1.) Train yourself at ascetism. When I started cooking school, my first instructor had everyone in the class in turn describe themselves, their goals, and anything about themselves they thought noteworthy. When I mentioned vegetarianism for the last point(I live in a very working class conservative county in Michigan--almost no

Spam. Why has no one mentioned Spam? Not of this earth! And I bet it turns into something out of HP Lovecraft if you ferment it á la anaken. It probably develops self-awareness and crawls out of the house on its own with your TV under its arm.

arugula, What religious outlook are you arguing that strictly diverges from the Deist supposition? And is this the only perspective possible with a comprehension of basic biology(which is not immutable, is it?)? Sorry to ask; my brain is awhirl with everyone's contributions--'tis a merry meleé!

Arugula, or how does that old descriptor go: "I'm agnostic. I don't know. And you don't either." Jose, The last part of Bertie Russell's zany hypothesis predicts Borgés's greatest work, "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius." This is the one where a fictional civilization is artificially inserted into human history by a Rosicrucian-like order of false historians, burying

la_veronique, I don't know you but I have faith in you. Remember that every time you make a decision, you are enacting a great privelege granted you by the Universe to entirely controvert every other experience from earliest childhood that you think determines who you are. Sometimes this is the right way to see it; sometimes it's detrimental. Sounds like it's the former for you now. If you

Lightform, 1,000 Thank Yous for posting this! I could not have viewed this at a better time. Everyone should take the time out of their busy schedules to watch Dr. Brownstein's lecture; I know of people who've benefitted tremendously from his care. Again, thank you.

Brian, unless a staunch belief in Heaven and Hell undergirded your entire world view before, I'd say continue on the path away from them that you have recently been on--your brain or soul is revealing a conceit to you that you no longer need to move through the world as yourself. Actually, even IF you really believed in Heaven and Hell, your brain or soul is trying to tell you something. The tr

A few years ago, I worked at a high end restaurant in Detroit, where OSHA violations were numerous to an almost comical degree. I worked as a pastry cook, and I also had to plate desserts for service. My station was next to the rather dilapidated old convection ovens, and various of us would complain after a long shift that we felt unwell; nothing specific, just foggy and a bit weak. It's norm

RocketShip, Comfrey and capsaicin topically(á la riverhousebill and Lois), sulfurous leafy greens internally(á la Jose), and lots of digestive enzymes to help the pancreas heal you, beginning three days before surgery and continuing for a week after. Enzymedica makes good ones, though you may still consider this "pill popping," I don't. Good luck!

I, too, love cold rainy days. But my brain definitely doesn't, after a long period. You have to make the best of the weather you get, but our ancient ancestors lived where it was sunny often, so I think that's what we biochemically tend toward. Hope all contributing from northerly latitudes are doing well!

Congratulations! I second what everyone else said, especially the chlorophyll from wheatgrass juice or alfalfa or barleygrass, and greens and beets. Actually, juicing the beets with tops and spinach would be very good for you. As for the cooked medicines: I take Floradix and find it works pretty quickly. It's very potent and is a B complex supplement as well. In the past, I have also taken

nik, You could try a light dilution of true colloidal silver and water. Even the ionic silver distillation you buy at the health food store is good enough to kill many common bacteria. If you're worried about pathogens in manure, etc. just wash the produce really well. I do wash my produce with running water; I've watched hands in the fields and they aren't necessarily sanitary in their han

Judging from your posts, I'm sure you aren't vain, arugula, and if it's any consolation: my mother tanned for many years and still looked younger than she was. It's also likely that all that tanning kept genetically predetermined cancer at bay until she was in her late sixties; even given lots of other contributing factors. She lived much longer than expected after diagnosis, and even her docto

Healthybun, There is some debate that distilled water has an acidifying effect on tissues. Also, unless you do it yourself, you cannot be sure that the water wasn't distilled in containers of heavy metals that could've leached into it. High desert well water is probably the best, but the rest of us must do what we can. So, I'd ask myself: what's the distillation container made of and what

I know, arugula, I was thinking the same thing. Also, the source for the CoQ10 in the formula? It's a Cousens' Tree of Life product, but . . . I still maintain that, being mammals, we should get our D from ultraviolet rays.

arugula, Your contribution is always invaluable! Thank you so much for doing some digging for me and answering my somewhat probing query about your salad. I suppose the easiest way to get a good ratio of sol:insol fiber is to eat as large a variety of produce as possible and to listen to one's gut. Again, thanks. P.S. Are you a teacher? When I was a Montessori intern, it made me monkey
