arugula, I'm just curious: you've mentioned elsewhere that your salads take a long time to eat, I think it was you, anyhow. What is the volume of your salads? How long does it take to get through one? And are you chewing the whole time? I have read in raw guides that it's just as good to throw a huge salad into a VitaMix and drink it down gradually. As a regular vegetarian, while in

Brian, Samhain is an evangelical synonym for "devil." In reality, it is a corruption of the Pre-Celtic British November festival of Samain, (End of Summer); in Celtic times it was believed a demon baby-snatcher(Samhanach) roamed the countryside around this time of year, which is where Christians got the idea that it was evil. Yet another thread that should be moved to Other Topi

baltochef, I truly believe that if one's loved ones cannot respect one's request to honor one's ways of healing, one must put the loved ones aside for a while. Perhaps they don't mean to be one's adversaries, but if they aren't helping, that is what they have become. When I became a vegetarian overnight at age 21, Lordy, the naysayers! I thought my family would disown me for being a freak.

irena, The following is a link to some products at Gaiam(you're probably familiar with this company): . Let us know how you're doing. Take heart--it's only as permanent a difficulty as you let it be. I am struggling to go 100% raw myself, and I am preconditioned culturally to feel I need hot food to make it through the winter. My people are Ukrainian, and I'm sure my Scythian ancestors

Justin1, Haven't used the Sun Splash system, but have heard good things about it over the years from chiropractors and such. I am thinking of getting one, as winter comes earlier and earlier every year here in Michigan, and I'd rather not have a brain disorder! I was looking into it for a family friend, who has had skin cancer and has been told to avoid the sun. We now know that synthesized

Kwan! Ronald Reagan was an alien operative! All is explained! Thanks for posting this. Very interesting. A couple of years ago, at the local hospital's used book sale, amid many, many dog-eared romance paperbacks, my eye spotted a curious little volume: The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects, by Edward J. Ruppelt, former head of the U.S. Air Force's "Project Blue Book," t

Brian, This is my first Christmas without my mom, who died in July. I figure I can make it dreadful and painful, or I can make it a psychic housecleaning opportunity. Christmas is an arbitrary celebration when it comes down to it--millions of people all over the world don't observe it. "Tomorrow" is the only true Holy Day, the only true Celebration Day, if you make it so. And it's

You are a sheep farming nation, right? See if you can get cholecalciferol capsules of lanolin harvested from sheep's wool. It's not vegetarian, but is marginally moreso than fish liver oil is. Also, there is a home tanning bed product that emits only UVB rays, which penetrate the epidermis but do not activate the melanin to tan it. They merely induce your body to photosynthesize Vit D. The sys

I think, roxeli, that what you're proposing, taken to its natural end, is a fascination slice of evolutionary theory: Richard has already "adapted" his body to being able to deal with the circumstance of being isolated in a Central American jungle, whereas Mr. Coleman hasn't. If it came to a matter of using resources most effectively to survive the experience, Richard would ace it an

P.S. I am nursing a cold, so shall be celebrating baby Mithras's birthday tomorrow with a pitcher of astragalus tea, whoo!

la_veronique, Does that mean you are hard-hearted? Oh, say it ain't so! I suppose I feel sorry for the guy, but as someone with a large prefrontal cortex, he should be able to examine his behavior and consider it. I know, I know, that's unrealistic. So let me say . . . I am sorrier for the monkeys!

The problem with irradiation is that we really don't know to what degree amino acids in food are denaturized and micronutrients destroyed. The USDA has not done any large scale, long term studies on this. And Justin, my dear, you are wrong, so, so wrong about Americans questioning things like this. Unless Oprah mentions it, the average American remains blissfully unaware! This is really a pro

Also, the history of Spiritualism, the religious movement that institutionalized regular communion with the dead, including one's family members. Sub-Saharan African tribespeople still do this, come to think of it. As for my direct answer to your query: But of course the d

Things like this make me so angry I want to spit. I cannot understand how people mistreat animals and children. Cannot understand. I remember my brother telling me after his first trip to Thailand about how this elephant cabbie was treating his elephant roughly when my brother was getting a ride. I said, "why didn't you tell him to stop?" You know, not to be culturally obtuse, just

shane! I narc you! You are actually . . . Michael Pollan! From my miserably broad experience with doctors, I have come to believe(with the left side of my brain), that there is actually a push by the pharmaceutical-industrial complex to make medical professionals "unaware" of nutrition. This isn't agreed upon at large seminars where every doctor must come to Crystal Conference Roo

Raw1228, I have heard this hypothesis of allergen craving also. It was explained to me as analogous to a junkie craving heroin, which may be considered an "allergen." Those neuroreceptors of your brain that are initially positively affected by the chemical responses to an allergen; though the overall effect may be adverse, beg you for more of the stuff against your biochemical best

Brian, The AMA has recommended that every medical school require 22 credit hours of nutrition; no school that's accredited requires more than 6 for a typical MD or DO, last time I checked. Also, the AMA is basically a fraternal organization and cannot dictate curriculum. There may not be a deliberate and nefarious conspiracy inherent in this. Rather, it may be one of passive ignorance. c

Bruce, I agree with your argument, except: SAD eaters damage their health by eating rich foods, such as pie with whipped cream, often, rather than thrice a month, say. I would assume the raw foodist would have the sense to not thoughtlessly indulge in raw versions of cooked "treats" at the same rate! Else, why make the troublesome transition to raw at all?
