You are both so smart. I eat w/the teachers because I need to speak with other adults at some point during the day. The topic of how I eat comes up at least every other day, whether it's a comment, joke or question (mostly there are questions). Even new people/subs notice and say, "Wow, you sure eat healthy." Victoria Bouchenco, our Northwest raw guru, wants rawies to always bring an

There's the industrial kind and the, uh, grown-for-private-use variety. The industrial still isn't legal in the US, even though it can't get you high. What-Evah!

Sunshine, thanks for your input. Do you think you never got skinny because of a good diet pre-raw?

Islandgirl, I know that you can do this too. You put so much time, attention, focus, inquery and energy toward this, there is no doubt in my mind. You're an inspiration. Betty

I'm glad you will be too, because the teachers' lounge can be a hot bed of criticism. Being too skinny doesn't sit well with teachers, and it was tiring to keep trying to reassure them that I wasn't going to die from raw food. I teach in the Dominican Republic.

When I was transitioning, I would take a big tupperware of whole and cut up vegetables--whatever was in season. This was great when I just needed to munch on something that wasn't as sweet or as sticky as fruit. (Being a teacher, I needed clean, simple things to snack on so I could be done quickly.) Slices of jicima, sweet peas, carrots, celery, stuff like that. I was surprised at how I didn't

Yea Khale! Awesome history. I knew you were something just looking at your zoo picture. Islandgirl, I was excited to see that you're a teacher too! I'm also impressed that you're raising 7 kids. Wow. Maybe not having energy to exercise has something to do with that?! Oh yeah, and being a STUDENT! Just thinking you might be a wee bit hard on yourself there, Igirl. That's a big reason I w

Hey Islandgirl, I have two ideas for quick, easy crunchy foods. Okay, maybe not quick, but totally easy and low effort. SEASONED SUNFLOWER SEEDS These were a must-have for me when I was transitioning. I ate them by the fistful. Soak sunflower seeds overnight (or for at least 6 hours), drain and put into a bowl. Mix in anything you have in your cupboard: sea salt, Nama Shoyu, ch

Dear Dancerinthenight, I've resigned myself to dying before. It's a relaxing place to be, because there's no fear of death. But it's only half of the equation. To be truly free, one must not be afraid to live, either. When I was suffering from ovarian cancer, I did lose my fear of death, but I also gained a fear of life--a life that was so painful and sad and hopeless that I just wanted to

If you are through w/transition, you can gain more weight than you like while eating raw; but if you are just starting out (w/in the first year), you will inevitably lose more than enough weight. Islandgirl, Sweetheart...It's the veggie burrito! I understand that your goal is to lose weight, but try this: Have your only goal be to eat raw. Never mind about how many calories a veggie burrito

Thanks Khale! I've never tried therapy, but it must work for some people. As for me, I'm a do-it-yourself girl as well.

Islandgirl, Please don't worry about how fast you lose weight. The lb. lost per week is moot--the important thing is that it will happen. Why do you have to watch everything that goes into your mouth? Have you tried just eating whatever you want as long as it's raw? That's done it for everyone else I know. If that didn't work for you (or anyone else reading this), I definitely want to know

Thanks to all who have responded so far. It's been enlightening! Islandgirl, I've thought of myself as a bit autistic, too! Actually, I guess I am, because I birthed a kid with an autistic spectrum disorder (PDD). Interestingly, the book, _The Highly Sensitive Child_, is a better description and guide than any of the stuff I've read for PDD. Khale, there are about as many ways to be HSP

Hello Everyone, Francis made a comment about being overwhelmed by malls since going raw that set me to wonder whether there is a connection between eating raw food and being a Highly Sensitive Person. Elaine Aron, a psychologist who researches this trait and has written several books on it, defines the highly sensitive person as "a distinct personality trait that affects as many as one

Tanawana's right, but there's usually a period of detox that has your body quite thin while you're waiting for that perfect weight. You are likely to lose some weight initially, but you'll likely gain enough back to look healthy. The theory I'm familiar with goes as follows: Every time you improve your diet, the body eliminates what doesn't fit before building to the new level of health co

Hi Sewraw, I had this, but just ignored it because it wasn't painful. Are your ears hurting you? When you say "detoxed", do you mean completely finished detoxing? If so, you don't really find out when. Detox comes and goes. If, say, one has been raw for years and then does their first long water fast, they can still detox. I have great deal of exposure to toxins as I live in

Hi Starglider, Okay, here's my typical day when I'm NOT on summer vaca in the States: First thing in the morning: water Breakfast: 8-12 oz Smoothie w/maybe the juice of 3 oranges and a banana, and a green powder, hemp seed/coconut oil and/or powdered hemp seed/handfull of walnuts, maybe some nutritional yeast if I'm up for it... Mid-day: mango and banana w/some walnuts, or mango w/avocado

Thanks for all the kudos and continued advice. Today was great--I introduced him to cashew cream and he LIKED it! He's dipping his strawberries into it. This one was a biggie because I'm taking him off of casein (a mild protein), his food drug of choice. (A note to anyone trying cashew cream with an extremely picky eater: add a little cinnamon and a few grains of sea salt in addition to sweet

You don't have to refridgerate any whole food for a day. Bring... 1) Lots of fruits (both fresh and dried) like bananas, grapes, raisins, etc. 2) A bag of nuts, raw almond butter (good for dipping apple slices into) that you salt yourself if you need it, or premade raw crackers (which can replace the bread if you want it to). 3) Sliced vegetables like jicima, celery, raddish, etc. Or

Honey, don't worry about the exercise. Just get out and walk for 20 or 30 minutes to lift your spirits and give your cells some oxgen. This isn't time to try to build muscle or do a lot of strenuous cardio. You're body is busy repairing. It needs tons of energy for this. I didn't feel like exercising every day until year three! Before that, I only felt like it sporatically. So relax, put you

Starglider, You are doing awesome! Tell your hubby not to sweat it. Explain that every single cell must be emptied out before the body will deign to build again. It has to purge the old before it is willing raise itself to the level of health you're putting in. After all, what would be the point of adding healthy stuff on top of the sludge? How inefficient would that be? The body is smar
