It sounds like you you're used to being motivated to exercise. If that's the case, I agree with you that it could be the overeating. First, the nuts and seeds: What kind are you eating? I quit snacking on almonds and sunflower seeds. They are just too easy to eat too much of because they're not high enough in fat. If I OD on almonds, I get sapped of energy. It's a lot harder to overeat

Rosemary, Yeah, maybe... I had a friend who complained of spaciness and low motivation, and is doctor's response was to tell him to eat chocolate and coke because his body was too alkaline. Were you eating acidic foods (like sunflower seeds) when you were raw?

Hi Raeth, Back to your question, F1 is right about your liklihood of struggling, but people's expereinces transitioning to raw vary widely. There are some things you can do to lessen this, which you are already keen to. Here are some further suggestions: 1) Get lots of rest. When you feel tired during practice or a regatta, find an opportunity to lay down on the grass. It's very possibl

In case anyone's still following this... Yesterday my son agreed to throw out the Tropicana Florida orange juice. He agreed it was gross and wanted fresh-squeezed again. Also yesterday, he was 50% raw. When he wanted Chai tea, I let it cool and added pine nut milk instead of soy. He loved it. At dinner, he had rolled "sushi" with grated jicima instead of rice, and filled with

I was given that orange juice and told it was raw. Drinking it (although I could taste something funny going on) gave me the first and last headache I'd had since eating raw. Marc, welcome, and good for you for starting this lifestyle! Any time you need encouragement, you'll find it here. Betty

Cacao is the name of the bean in Spanish, and it's used to make chocolate, both cooked and raw. If you're ever hiking in the tropics and come upon this plant with it's heavy, football-shaped red and green fruits, pull one off, split it open (prefereably with a machete, but a sharp rock might work) and suck on the white slime-covered seeds. It's sour, slightly sweet if it's ripe, and has a slight

Oh Nannie, I'm so sorry you got sick. All I can say is, could be there was a reason you never liked avocados? You could get an analysis to see if you were poisoned by something in the food. That would be good to know, for future reference on eating avos. Feel better! Betty

I can't answer this specific to raw, but I can say that when parents take their casein and/or gluten-addicted autsitic children off foods that have them (principally dairy and wheat), during withdrawl they can be really spacey for a couple of weeks. (One child walking on monkey bars just walked right off the edge.) It's easy to get addicted to these substances. Especially casein, because it

Okay, today we had The Talk. I told him my goal is to get him 50% raw by the end of the summer. I said it wouldn't be hard, that already today he's done it by eating 2 bananas with his cereal, and raw crackers with guacomole, cheese and cooked chili for lunch. "What do you think?" I asked. "Can you commit to 50%?" "Depends." "On what?" "If

Francis, Funny you should mention orange juice. Yesterday, we went to the store to pick out smoothie ingredients--although my son's idea was to get a Luna bar. (When I mentioned to him the idea of picking out his own ingredients to make his own smoothies, his response was, "No thanks, Mom." Anyway, as I was perusing the fruits, he called out from the fridge section, "I want to

Hi Lorddimples, You asked: is all cooked food bad for you? Answer: Nature uses bacteria to renew itself. When a plant is sick, dying or dead, bacteria goes to work on it; but if that same plant is healthy, bacteria pretty much leaves it alone. When you throw away a living carrot, it'll sit in the trash can intact for a long time, dry out, then gradually start to mold and decay. Put stir

Great suggestions! I am heartened by your encouragement. Yes, Franky loves plain fruit and does choose it on his own. Grapes are a great idea to always have on hand, and I'll see if I can find the pluots--I hadn't ever heard of them! Thanks Patty. I love the idea of having him taste a bunch of different recipes, and to make sure I catch him before he's hungry--thanks, Francis. Francis, I

I hope so. Generally, putting anything 100% raw other than a piece of fruit or some carrot sticks in front of him is liable to send him out the nearest window headfirst. You'd think I was suggesting he pull out each of his fingernails. I tried him on the smoothie this morning. As I was dropping strawberries and banana pieces into the blender and pouring in a generous pool of agave, he chi

You are inspiring me, as well. Every time someone goes raw, it's a new affirmation of the human spirit's ability to overcome every obstacle there is--and with raw, there's a-plenty! You're all truly awesome. Betty

Francis, we don't need many guys that fit that description, we each just need ONE of them! I'm with you, sister. I'm counting on the universe for the same thing. Francis, Patty and Pakd4fun, you three are inspirations. This summer I'm going to start transitioning my 12-year old secretly. I started him on raw corn chips the other day (he's eating them with cheese). You've given me the co

I'm not allergic to wheat, but my body did have an intolerance to gluten, so I avoided it before going raw. Now that I've been raw, though, the intolerance is gone, so I find Namu Shoyu is easier to digest now. I'll even eat tabouleh (raw bulgar wheat) on occasion, whereas before I'd get joint inflamation doing that. Anyway, point being, even allergies can disappear after a while on raw, so m

Patty, I don't know. After three months raw, I was told that I had three different parasites in my system, and was given medication for it. I didn't take the medication, had the runs for a couple of weeks, and then all the symptoms were gone. I now live in a tropical climate in a developing country where everyone except me seems to suffer from parasite-induced bowel problems on a regular ba

Patty, It doesn't take a lot of fat, but it shouldn't be completely cut out. Here's an excerpt of an article I found that articulates the improtance of fat for repair better than I can. It's from "Think of your brain as the master gland that sends chemical messengers throughout the body, telling each organ how to work. An important group of these chemical messengers are the prostagla

I just discovered a corner-cutter: When making crackers, make them super savory so that when it comes time to eat them with fresh toppings, the toppings don't require any time-consuming flavoring. (The crackers you make once in the week; the toppings go on daily. Get the logic?) Make the crackers with extra garlic, onion, herbs and salt, and put in sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms and/or olive

Patty, The reason I'm concerned about your cutting down on fat while transitioning to raw is because your body needs it to self-repair--which is what transitioning is all about.

Hi Brigette, I'm happy to welcome you to raw food. Any question you have, no matter how silly or trivial it may seem to you, will be answered here in spades. Do don't be shy about asking anything; you'll surely find many who've been in your boat here. How long have you been eating raw? How is it going so far?

Islandgirl, That was a huge reason that I wanted to be raw. I didn't want to have to think about food anymore either. I didn't want to have to read labels and wonder, "Should I be eating this? Will this add to my thighs? Will it really make that big a difference if I put it down?" I was so tired of it. With this diet it's simple. Is it raw? Than it's fine. What are you eat

Hi Dewey, First, where did you get that number? It sounds like it's based on the SAD. Keep in mind that raw foodists take in much more nutrients per calorie than those who eat cooked food. After two weeks raw, much of the mucoid plaque coating the digestive tract has disintegrated, making the body's assimilation way more efficient, and thus requiring even fewer nutrients. That calorie count

Islandgirl, The weight doesn't come off in the first month of raw. It can take well over six months. It happens slowly, but completely. I was at my thinnest at the one year mark, then my body turned around and started building again. Please tell me how long you have been raw, because I want to know if there is someone who's gone raw and still has to watch the fat after that long. Than

You're right, Francis. I was thinking of the dizziness and shouldn't have ignored the candida. Definitely take care of that first, Siracusa. About the arthritis: I had it too, and it's symptoms were the first thing to go after going raw. Live without corn, wheat and potatoes (nightshades in general) while your 80-90% raw, and that should releive any inflamation. Betty "Don't beli
