Good news about people in my home town! I know it pales in comparison to the other stuff going on, but good news is good news either way!!!

I called a friend in the sheriffs department and finally got through to him and he says that most of the missing people I had heard about have been found! thats a load off my mind!!!

Headline on MSN homepage --

Man swept to death by tsunami wave in Calif. *

Huge surges from Japan quake smash ships at West Coast harbors

************************************************************

* As a side note:

"Man swept to death by tsunami wave in Calif. "

Should be:

"Man Swept to Death by Tsunami Wave in California"

It really gets on my nerves when editors don't seem to know enough to use capital letters and proper abbreviations. I usually change them.

Also interesting --

The 'Supermoon' Did Not Cause Japanese Quake

USGS denies any relation to astrological event — which is still a week away

"The devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan early Friday were "completely unrelated" to the approaching "supermoon," despite a news report that tied the earthquake to the upcoming lunar event, according to U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist John Bellini.

The supermoon will occur on March 19, when the moon is at or near its point of closest orbit — lunar perigee — and is also full. As we explained in our previous coverage of the upcoming supermoon, seismologists have found no evidence to believe that lunar perigees heighten seismic activity.

The best evidence that this earthquake was not caused by a supermoon is that it happened now — exactly a week away from the date the moon will be full, and almost a week after it was new, the two times that the moon exerts its greatest pull on the planet."

Oh, oh -- Nuclear Power Plant Explodes

Explosion Rocks Japan Nuclear Plant After Quake

"An explosion at a nuclear power plant in northern Japan on Saturday blew the roof off one building, brought down walls and caused a radiation leak of unspecified proportions, Japanese officials said, after Friday’s huge earthquake caused critical failures in the plant’s cooling system."

What was the mistake? ;'Tsunami' and 'wave' are not proper nouns, dear.

It's just that the lack of Caps in the title of an article and the wrong abbreviation of California in this particular article gets on my nerves.

I have looked at news stories by AP, etc. and they do not put caps on anything save the names of things. I think you may be confusing rules of capitalization because I know that some titles require caps (except for articles and other small words..). Is this a thing against MSNBC? LOL--I will bet we can find the same with Faux!smiling smiley

*Edit: I notice that you put 'caps' in caps...Don't know if that was just a typo. Another thing is that abbreviating California doesn't seem wrong or unusual to me. I think there are different rules for news stories. It's almost a wire thingie because it's 'breaking.' So formality goes out the window. If it were a magazine article, I am sure they would spell everything out.

I capitalized the C in caps just for emphasis. The proper abbreviation for California is CA. Yes, I am referring to the headlines of articles I see online, and actually I never noticed if it is a 'news story' situation to use lower case, rather than a regular headline or title of an article.

Living outside of the US we have no idea what your 2 letter abbreviations mean. Calif I know is California, CA could be anything, anywhere. I don't even know how many states there are let alone what they are called or lettered as.
