Date: February 17, 2011 12:38AM That's what we're moving towards!
Since I've gotten my hubby and son on board with living foods we've even gotten rid of our goats and most of our chickens and are focusing on growing the raw food we are eating. Anticipating the rental of a sod cutter in the near future...get rid of the grass we need to mow and grow some food! Heaven for us. Love Path to Freedom, they're so inspirational. Date: February 18, 2011 12:29AM Thanks coco.
That is a great way to get a garden spot ready. Unfortunately we're starting right now and want to get things growing well soon and where we're at (just across the border of Florida in GA) our grass and weeds will actually just grow up through the cardboard and mulch and it takes a long time for it to kill the grass. We're also doing a lot right up by the house and for every beneficial insect sheet mulching attracts we get about 100 cockroaches. Ah, the south. But when we plan farther ahead we do sheet mulch areas, but we're going for quick and easy this time. To say weeds and grass here are tenacious is quite the understatement. Date: February 18, 2011 02:29AM They are refuting the letters of intent to sue etc sent out to other bloggers but if they did in fact trademark the names that would be an odd thing to do just because. Strange. Very strange. Re: brilliant self sufficiency

Date: February 18, 2011 05:38AM So, it's true, they are suing people who use those terms even though they have been in common usage for years beforehand. Please sign this petition and pass it along to put an end to this. If I start growing herbs in my backyard here in Canada and making soap or whatever I can't call it Urban Homestead soap or any such reference without being sued by them. How ridiculous is that? I mean, I love what they're doing and think the inspiration is great but that doesn't give them to right to claim the name all for themselves. Phooey on them.

Date: February 22, 2011 02:41PM [sigh]It pays to be a cynic. I suppose the old lady who sold fresh eggs out of her actual homestead at the end of our street(she rented from her farmer brother whose land was developed for our tiny subdivision)could be sued by these people, if she were still alive . . . 'course, she could just call it a "suburban homestead" and circumvent the legal wicket that way. All together everyone: "It's not an urban homestead, it's a SUBurban homestead," or, "I don't have an urban homestead, I'm next to the outlet mall--it's a SPRAWLstead!"
I'm copyrighting that last one Re: brilliant self sufficiency

Date: February 22, 2011 03:12PM Wow, the Dervaes family have gone from looking merely tetchy to downright spiteful in a matter of paragraphs. It's baffling to me that anyone can copyright a term, even if it was contrived by someone else, and they know it was. That's an excellent way to discredit anything else honorable one may have done. Sad, sad. Re: brilliant self sufficiency

Date: February 25, 2011 11:22PM There used to Victory gardens and nobody copy wrote that name for their personal gain.
If anyone wants to do that with the term Urban Homestead(ing) why not just put their name in front of the term and copy write that? Dervaes Urban Homestead Prisms Urban Homestead Makes sense to me. The way they are doing it they are making themselves very unpopular. Love, Prism Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/25/2011 11:36PM by Prism. Re: brilliant self sufficiency

Date: February 25, 2011 11:24PM the cease and desist letters are whats making them very unpopular, I dont think anyone would have cared much about them copy-writing it if it wasn't for that...they have even gone after bloggers... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, mirror in the sky What is love? Date: February 25, 2011 11:36PM There is a copyrite option called Commons something that makes it a public term that anyone can use freely. That would have "kept it out of the big corporation's hands" which is what they claimed they were after when they decided to do this thing. That is such a load of organic bullsh!t, obviously. Date: February 25, 2011 11:38PM most definitely, even if they argued they did not know of the option, their statements are still proven to be lies by the fact they send out all these cease and desist letters... it really bothers me...meh...
Edoy: On closer examination, I think what bothers me most is that i really looked up to them, and when they fell off that pedestal because of their greedy tactics and lies, I felt disappointment because of my shattered expectations of people I held to a higher standard then the normal money grubbing big business they state they are against... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh, mirror in the sky What is love? Everybody should just go crazy calling everything urban homestead this and that, how can they afford to track them all down and send out all those letters? They'll get tired of it eventually.
