sooo cool. its called The Doctrine of Signatures, whch posits that, by observation, one can determine from the color of the flowers or roots, the shape of the leaves, the place of growing, or other signatures, what the plant's purpose was in the divine plan. and really compelling when you see the pictures, like so... makes sense to me. i've read that a very high percentage of the plants that

lol on the six year old quote. kids are such riots! thanks pakd, that helps alot. while a part of me feels i should just be "strong" (militant?) about it and allow no cooked food in the house--it would sure be easier on me--another part of me knows my kid and feels like that's not the way, because self-rule is so important to her. i agree never say 'you can't have x'. so i have just

hahahahhahaha... i could have written this post a few months ago, except substitute "kidney" for "pinto". i tried to soak them for a really long time. yuck. i tried cooking them at really low temperatures for a long time. yuck. i tried all kinds of "raw gourmet" substitutes for refried beans. double yuck. when you really want the real deal, the almost is totally

i just thought y'all might find amusing what a Google search turned up under "perfect food": * of course the first 11 listings are sites hawking Garden of Life's powdered greens supplement called "Perfect Food". that's called good marketing. * an article that asks 9 nutrition "experts" to name their perfect food or dish, results being: (1) whole-grain corn puff

best way to find out is to email the companies directly and ask them (you may have to define raw for them... however you define it). i don't take a general supplement. at first i did, out of habit. then i felt like dropping it, so i did. but i do take herbs "prescribed" by my ayurvedic practitioner to address specific imbalances, so you might consider that the same thing. the body is

green papayas are harvested before they show any signs of yellow/orange, and once picked that way they will not ripen. they are pretty hard, kind of the texture of a squash. i love green papaya salad too, and i just bought 4 monster greens at the farmers market this weekend and have been shredding them up with lime juice, cilantro, jalapenos... yummy!

1) term made popular by dr. steven pratt in his book of the same name, where he identified a short list of common foods that are super-loaded with nutrients, antioxidants, etc to prevent disease, improve physical and mental functioning, and delay the impairments of old age. blueberries and broccolli made the list, so did citrus fruits, spinach, and raw walnuts. (so did turkey, wild salmon, and so

i agree the pill is totally evil, at least in my experience and what i've witnessed with friends, etc. i have a (detail oriented, intelligent) friend who used three different types of natural, self monitoring systems, including billings, and she has 3 (beautiful, well loved, well parented although unplanned) kids as a result. she always says the same thing "looking back, i know where i w

i'm a single-prepper! and if you're anything like me, don't worry about the cabbage thing... i go through a head each of red and green cabbage every 5 days or so. i think i ate 5 zucchini today... yikes!in other words, even though i've got a full size fridge and a coffee table stacked high with fruit for myself and my five year old daughter, i worry much more about running out of food than i do a

i have an old cheepie dehydrator that someone gave me, and i use it very seldomly. making crackers and the like would be more effort than i am interested in putting forth. i make crunchy onion rings out of yummy sweet maui onions that i like to throw on my salads for a fun texture. i rarely buy prepackaged dehydrated foods -- crazy expensive! but i hear you, UL, it can't compare in any way ene

someone stepped over the line, but it sure wasn't greg. you sound pretty stressed out, and surely an enlightened guy like yourself can recognize that as a signal that its time to question your own thinking. you may want to give yourself the gift of following your own advice. peace!

yay! me too! when i was eating my "healthy vegetarian" SAD, i was so energetically depleted that the thought of exercise was a joke given my busy single-working-mom schedule. but now i find that i crave exercise, i'm back doing my yoga practice, weight lifting, kettlebells (love em!), swiss ball core exercises, and lots of bodyweight drills. and i'll do them at 11 o'clock at night or 4

after years of being an insomniac who got 5 hours per night -- thanks to motherhood and a raging caffeine addiction -- i am blissfully enjoying the 8, 9 sometimes 10 hours of uninterrupted sleep my body seems to want right now. i've wondered too about the reports of raw foodies who are getting by on far less, but trying not to compare my journey to others and giving myself what is making me feel
