I feel sorry for the rat stuck in a robot body. He/she will never know what it is like to fully experience being a rat. Rats laugh when they are tickled you know, the sound is just too high for humans to hear. The poor rat will never know the joy of being tickled. They are also very playful, with big personalities. I hate how they are disrespected and seen as objects to experiment on.

Donald Watson, who coined the word "vegan" defined it in this way: "Veganism is a philosophy & way of life which seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practical, all forms of cruelty to animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose." I just wanted to throw this out there. It seems like the most sensible approach.

davidzanemason - I like how you describe veganism as being on an upward path verses being on a downward path. If people could only call themselves vegans who practice it in only the stricted sense that the term implies, hardly anyone could truly call themselves vegan. I think it is about genuinely doing your best to avoid causing suffering to others, but it is impossible to be perfect. Sometime

I know what you mean. Parents are paranoid these days to the detriment of the kids. When I was a kid, my siblings and I would be outside all day long playing with each other and the other kids. We played in those *dangerous* metal playgrounds. Yes, we fell and got scraped up sometimes but that is a part of being a kid. Kids are resilient and they can handle it. We constantly invented games, ran

It disturbs me because I feel like I am more in tune with the vibrations of the food than I used to be. I knew what it was before but I was able the see it in a more abstract way. I could tune it out more. Now I can't help but think of the animals, the exploitation of thier bodies, the theft of there babies and the suffering they had to endure. Maybe I should look beyond it, but I can't help fe

My husband eats meat and dairy. I used to be more accepting of this, but lately it is really starting to bother me. I get grossed out when he eats it and if I comment in the slightest was he becomes irritated with me. I don't know what to do. I hope one day he will become vegan. I try and get him to read some books that are important to me, but he resists. I think he doesn't want to delve t

You are right and people are so dissillusioned they believe that a giant new home will make them happy. They are usually mistaken because happiness is not found in possessions.

I am a raw-foodist but primarily a vegan for ethical reasons, so I don't think this article is applicable to everyone. I do think he brings up some good points to think about. I am curious of your responses to it.

I have not seen it yet, but I read the book a few years back. It is by Jon Krakauer. He follows the route the young man (Christopher McCandless) travels and talks with the people he met along the way. It was incredibly sad, but I really appreciated the beautiful spirit of this person.

Eeew. The unhealthy colons were grotesque. They seem like a ripe place for cancer to form. That was interesting.

I originally put this in the health form, but it is really slow moving: I get headaches sometimes (like right now) which make me feel like I am in a fog. It is incredibly hard to concentrate. I used to drink coffee to relieve them but I have completely given it up. It wasn't an addiction to coffee that brought them on because I only drank it on occations that I had a headache (maybe a couple t

As a raw-vegan, are you primarily concerned with your own health or the ethics of veganism (lessening cruelty and environmental damage)? I believe they are inexorably linked, but I am definitely identified with ethics first and then the health part comes secondary. I think primarily focusing the goal of perfect health can be damaging because it is an ego-centric endeavor. We are all fleeting

Sundancer - In theory sheep are not hurt when used for wool, but unfortunately in a system where wool is produced in mass qualities, the sheep are horribly abused like any other animal in a factory farm setting. They are seen merely as commodities, live miserable and sickly lives while crowded together practically on top of each other. There is also a cruel practice called mulesing (common is A

People have a lot of good tips here, especially the potluck one. If I was in your situation I would get a job so I had more money. Is there a reason why you can't work?

Has anyone read this? It is an amazing book. It looks at food in as the root of culture and explores all of the ramifications of our food ritual. It explores the origins of our 'herding culture' and makes remarkable connections between food and many of our problems today (health, spiritual, environmental, etc...). There are many books that touch upon these elements, but I have never seen one

You could switch to yerba mate. It is less acidic than coffee, more nutritious, and is also pretty high in caffeine. It would be best to get off the caffeine, but this may be a good starting point where you gradually limit your intake. Drinking fresh juices, smoothies, or wheat grass shots are an even better idea. I really love kombucha drinks, they makes me feel very energized. I often put a tab

The best make-up can't be applied. It comes from the inside out - glowing skin from radiant foods and a twinkle in the eye. I gave it up years ago and it was very freeing for me. For one thing, I don't have to bother with it. Also, I have come to accept my previously percieved imperfections and came to a realization that there are no imperfections. We are all unique and beautiful. There is
