I'm unclear why many seem threatened by this man's diet tweaks. He seems like an honest person trying his best in the tangled up world of nutrition. His over arching message sounds sensible: blood test, exercise, supplement deficiencies. Nor do I get the B12 conundrums expressed. Like Prana correctly and quietly notes, B12 appears to be an issue for all, not just *raw* vegans. Also, what's t

I'm in a nice relationship -- I'm a (mostly) raw vegan and she is a vegetarian. It doesn't cause us any problems -- we both eat how we like. But we're both pretty chill and relaxed and neither of us think of diet as a strict religion to follow or be damned, as so many raw vegans and paleo people do. Frankly, many of the raw vegans I know are rather annoying, so we keep to ourselves.

Yes, we're all smart about blood sugar levels and what we think we know. Yet until we actually test for it, we do not know what affects what, and there's no reason to write things we really don't know. Theory is wonderful. But different bodies act in different ways to different food components. I like to know, for example, what eating seven bananas does to my blood glucose, and knowing these

i've been a raw vegan for more than three years. I spend a lot of my hard-earned money on "the world's healthiest foods" I eat between 20 and 35 servings of fresh, raw, organic fruits and vegetables every day -- if it's whole and raw and oh pure i eat it.. blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, kale, i eat so much salad...daily i eat so much salad, and i've been down the "blendi

Salt, too. I once adored Indian food -- all the lovely vegan curries. Now I can't eat them, they're waaaay too salty. And when I eat cooked Indian food, several hours later my hands and feet feel swollen, my face feels inflamed, I feel "heavier" and I need to rest. I used to think this was just placebo, but now I think differently. Eating cooked Indian food just makes me feel rotte

I didn't know that it was the sulfur doing this, but I agree that nuts and seed over-consumption giving me foul-smelling burps. If I eat several Brazil nuts too many, or too much broccoli or cauliflower then I get these uncomfortable burps that seem to originate deep within my belly. They can last for hours and they're not too wonderful.

Good stuff, Suncloud. I'm curious about your references to great apes eating @#$%&. I worked with orangutans, bonobos and pan paniscus for a few years, and I never directly observed them eating their own excrement. Not that I doubt you. I wouldn't put the eating of ANYTHING past great apes -- especially in captivity -- including their own @#$%&. I'm just casually curious about your reference

Awesome post, Maxi. You know, about your voice fasts, I've been considering doing a Dathun, which is 30-days of sitting meditation in silence. It's a Shambhala Buddhist practice, and you do it with the same group of people in a monastery or retreat center. In fact, there's one at Karme Choling in Maine this spring, and if you've recently lost your job, it's half off the price of food, lodging,

Well, um, I work in the news as a cameraman, and the folks in this business are pretty wound up. So I do pranayama. Also, throw away your television. Beware the web is corrosive, too. And yet there actually is some good news out there: www.goodnewsnetwork.org. It's not a religious-based, so Agnostics and Athiests, no worries.

I like that phrase, it's nice. I think meditation is wonderful. And some kind of exersize that's not too hard on the bones. Yoga works great for me. As we all assume, health is more than just food...

Autophagy is a cellular process that mediates the degradation of intracellular components. It is over-activated during starvation (eg, calorie restriction) when the body searches for any energy source and building blocks it can find. When the signal of starvation is received, the body over-activates autophagy in all its forms: macro, micro and chaperone mediated, to sequester cytoplasm, cell o

I love olives, I think I may be an addict. I know they're loaded with sodium, but still I eat 25-30 of them a day. I'm actually a little embarrassed by that fact. I'm trying to cut back on my goofy olive benders, but I still keep buying them and eating them, buying them, eating them, and buying them again. Confessing to you now, when I think about olives, my mouth waters. It must be the salt

I appreciate your enthusiasm, and cheer your success! Losing 60 pounds and now having more energy are very real accomplishments, and you should be proud! I look at eating in much the same manner as you. That is, every meal is a choice, every meal is another opportunity to eat well, and to give the body what may be best to keep it functioning well into old age. Eating a plant-based diet is

I've almost stopped drinking alcohol entirely, too. Which makes me kind of boring. But it's difficult for me to read about the effects of alcohol on the body, and still enjoy drinking. I miss red wine, though. But I think red wine, and all alcohol, is terrible for so many organs.

I need to go back to chemistry class. I get the idea that eating fried non-food is hazardous. What's confusing to me, though, is the idea that phytochemicals become disengaged ("deranged" seems emotive) in the heating process.

I keep reading this idea that cooking "deranges" stuff in plants. On a chemical level, what could this mean? Citations? Any studies out there to support this claim?

I wouldn't be too quick to trash the placebo effect. The brain and the mind the brain creates is a strong force -- like it or not, for good or ill. We have the potential to create some long-lasting positive/negative effects through placebo. Those effects continue to be clarified through the current scientific model. It could very well turn out that, no, wheat grass is chemically no better o
