Yes, and I have heard from many sources that her soups did not taste so great.

Me, too, like maui_butterfly. They can be like V-8 but much better. I suspect it's similar to Ann Wigmore's energy soups--the original green smoothies, but no sweet fruit. She inspired Victoria Boutenko. But I've never actually seen a recipe for one of her energy soups, so I don't know.

arugula, I wanted to send a pm thanking you for answering my question about vaccines, but your box was full. I appreciate the (real not pseudo) scientific knowledge. It's not the only kind of knowledge I value, but it's a nice adjunct to our own experiences

Yes, "pre-packaged" salt (like in celery and tomatoes and other whole foods) is there is perfect amounts, with the right ratios we need or everything else to keep things in balance--after all, sodium is an essential nutrient. This is important. Extra salt disturbs that balance and has been proven to contribute to a myriad of health problems--this link cites issues like stroke, heart att

No, 2500 mg is a arbitrarily high limit the government set--try and get no more than that amount, is what they say. Don't worry about it, foods have naturally occurring sodium. Too much is poison. I don't know what your deficiency is, by why not go to a doctor and ask for some blood tests if you are concerned? The problem with these sorts of symptoms is that they are symptoms for multiples iss

Tastes change radically if you give them a chance. people don't know this, so they think if they change their diet, they will never be happy again. no way is this true. I used to eat french fries for lunch and potato cheese soup for dinner. I hatehatehate these now. I tried a potato chip the other day out of curiosity and spit it right out, the memory was not like the reality. It was so gross, th

So catile can be too harsh... but I don't put the castile on my scalp though, I just run it through my hair to try and clean it. And what happens with castile while I'm in the shower running my fingers through my hair, is that my hair clumps up and feels really coarse. And then I rinse it all out and dry it and it's still dirty-feeling. When I use regular shampoo I can start to separate it and it

282. Re: hair
Funny, the castile soap makes my hair greasy, it looks like I didn't wash it. I like the simplicity though. Probably most raw foodists try and avoid dangerous chemicals and only use natural versions of those things if they use them. When I went on a water-only fast, it really made me think about what I might be absorbing through my skin, because I didn't want to disturb my fast. But it made me

The World Health Organization's guidelines for protein are reasonable. If they are really interested, they can look it up themselves. I like them more than the AMA (American Medical Association), they also say to breastfeed for at least two years ineatd of one since since are not so subject to American cultural pressure

Most people I know that bike a lot have single speeds. They have less parts to break and get salt and dirt stuck in them, so are more reliable. You could do the Mr. Roger's bike (cruisers), they are very comfortable. But they can take 50% longer to get somewhere, seriously!

yes, brenna is totally right. most people won't notice. I never talk about my food, but some women have noticed that I am thin and never eat the junk food. (And I got mad because they want us to pay to bring pop and muffins and bagels and pasturized juice to meetings--I said, why not drink water and eat our own food!!!) Anyway, those women have gotten curious over time and ask questions. I just s

Mountain bikes are super comfortable, but sooo slow and heavy. I say this only as a lazy person, to let you know, you have to do more work to go the same distance and it will still take you longer. Unless you are biking in the mountains, of course I have always had roadish-hybrids, or now a road bike with upright handlebars (I sacrifice a little speed for comfort).

I used to picture the animal I was eating, then I would lose my appetite for the meat naturally. I remember the last BLT I ever had, it was my favorite food . I pictured the pig and then I could never order another one, and I was fairly little. It was a nice, natural progression, nothing forced, no discipline. Get one of those nice PeTA pamphlets

Maybe good for transition, bad later on. Very good for a SAD eater who normally eats french fries and hamburgers. The good or bad is contextual. Let it happen naturally.

Oh yes, I did that in the summer--free fruit gathering. In Minnesota, I would gorge on Juneberries and mulberries and black and red raspberries (though last year was a bad season for raspberries). Also, pears apples plums and we even found wild grapes and cherries. All found in the city! You just have to explore and keep an eye out, especially by more wild areas. Walk around randomly. Sadly I

Yep, khale. Neal Barnard's "Breaking the Food Seduction" talks about addiction, especially with meat and dairy (cheese especially) and refined grains. A good read, skip the recipes at the end (low-fat vegan, but overall too refined and processed for most of us).

Suvine, That's cool you know Dr. T. How did you find out about him? I am a little jealous of all that fruit you have fresh down in Miami. That's actually how I heard about raw foods. His restaurant was new and had a stand at this green living fair. I wanted to visit the restaurant but I was a poor student. Finally I went and loved it. Now I go more often that I used to, but mostly to buy th

Suvine's advice is good--laughing instead of getting angry or defensive. It shows that eating like this does *not* invovle being uptight. In Carol Adam's "Living Among Meat Eaters" she also says never to discuss your diet over a meal. They are eating meat so it won't be good to point out the truth about it. Say you'd rather talk about it later if you think that would be productive.

When I started bike commuting, I was totally out of shape. I walked sometimes, that was it. But I just kept doing it. And when it snowed, and it got cold, I just put on layers. My balance improved. Think of it as modern-day hunting/gathering--bundling up and going on an adventure to go get your food. My friend got a trailer for his bike so he could haul things around, and for when he goes dumpste

In Mexico, they make "atoles" with oats or corn flour--basically smoothies with milk and sugar and maybe a banana (? I am not Mexican). I think a smoothie with a banana, date, and maybe nut milk would be good with oats.

I know that scientifically, sugar is sugar. But how can the packaging not make a difference? I stopped eating candy because I got tired of the highs and lows it would give me. I also found myself unable to stop desiring more candy after eating a single piece, and eliminating it was the key to stopping horrible menstrual cramps. I have never had any of this with fruit.

I disagree that cravings are from nutrient deficiencies. I tend to find that they are from detox, to addictive or over-stimulating foods. Meat is addictive because of addictive compounds it has, same for cheese. Sugar works like a drug. Some people on this board will argue the same for spices or onions or garlic. Some people find this to be true for wheat, if they are sensitive to it. The thigns

Simple Living--Get a car? Nooooo! I am totally car-free. I have never had a car. I bike everywhere, it is cheap and easy. I am going to bike over to the Mississippi Market right now (a co-op in Saint Paul) and I live in Minneapolis. If I can do it, you can, too! I bike and walk to all these places I'm talking about. Most everywhere I go is just a few miles from my house, or even downtown, and som

Okay, I am 5'3" and small-boned. And active. So this will be different for other people. Also it was different when I had 15 pounds to lose (I could get by on a lot less). And it will be different in the future. Also, sometimes I eat cooked foods--I had steamed kale and mushrooms for dinner last night. Otherwise I would have eaten half a cup of almond butter, maybe. Better to not push it.

In the summer, I shop at farmer's markets--but I do have to avoid the ones that resell conventional produce. The Midtown Farmer's Market is one that is local-only (Minnesota/Wisconsin). Now, I shop primarily at a few different co-ops, and the produce center in this place called "Global Market" which is an indoor market with food places from around the world. They often have sales on
