Well, as if I hadn't already edited my above post enough times, I'd like to qualify one statement. My last sentence (sort of) was "Works for me". I'd rather have that say, "Works for me......for now".

Regarding Sunshine79's statement that "(RDA) measurements pertaining to the cooked world may not necessarily apply to us": That might be possible. If it is, then one alternative to looking at the established RDAs would be to become familiar with as many of the symptoms of deficiency as possible, like for instance, leg cramps associated with calcium deficiency. Just a couple of th

2884. Re: SOS!
Fruitgirl's post sounds very plausible to me too, but whatever is happening, it still wouldn't hurt to make sure enough of the essential nutrients are there.

KathyT, Sorry, I'm not 57, I'm 56. Looks like I'm getting to the age where all the numbers seem the same. But I'd still rather not add a year if I can help it! To summarize the above, I think your hair loss is probably due to a temporary shock to your system, but just to be sure, and to help you not worry, it would be good to know you're getting enough of the essential nutrients.

Sunshine is the best source of Vitamin D, but be careful not to burn. I started to take a B12 supplement about 5 years ago after 15 years 100% vegan. I'd always believed the creator would NOT have made us require vitamin B12 if the only "natural" way we could get it was to kill some other creature or make some other creature suffer. But I was open-minded enough about it to educ

2887. Re: SOS!
Hi KathyT, I've read your story, and I think your hair loss may be a temporary symptom due to the relatively recent radical change in your diet. Hair loss seems to be not too uncommon for people of any age when they first begin to transition. I do think it's a good idea to go to nutritiondata.com and enter what you are eating (in the "pantry" to see if you are getting enough of

chuckle, chuckle, laughing out loud! VERY GOOD LAVERONIQUE! I can't do it. Oh, sorry, but I don't eat animal products. Luv ya! Thanks again Arugula and LaVeronique for the information. It always feels good to learn something new.

I'll add that if a person is whole and is unable and/or unmotivated to exercise regularly and at least somewhat strenuously, it might be due to a SAD and toxic diet. On the other hand, it might also be due to a raw vegan deficient diet. I believe both are possible. Of course there's lots of other reasons why people don't get enough exercise, like for instance just not really knowing how impo

I agree with Rawrrr! Thanks Arugula. Cruciferous greens really do seem to be the worse when they start to rot, and now we have an explanation!

I kinda think if you still feel like this tomorrow, it might be a good time to eat just fruit until you feel hungry again. That probably won't be too long. You might even feel a lot better by tomorrow.

I think it's wonderful what you're doing - not just for yourself, but for the example you're setting for your kids and your community. Just to let you know in advance, there may possibly be times when you slip up or at the very least, you may find it difficult to follow the Cousens regimen exactly. For those times, try to stay raw, and stay vegan. If staying raw seems momentarily too difficu

4 or 5 days/week I eat lots of organically grown fruit (including cucumbers) plus 1/2 to 1 avocado, and a small amount of sesame seeds and sunflower seeds either soaked overnight or drained and sprouted one more night. Before soaking, it amounts to 1/2 cup seeds total each day. I eat half those seeds in the late morning and half in the mid to late afternoon. Some days I eat less seeds and/or n

Thanks Rawrrr! and Arugula. That was exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Arugula, do fruits contain zero methionine or cystein, or do they contain some, but less than vegetables? Also, what about nuts and seeds? Do human bodies produce any methionine or cysteine without having to eat it? Sorry to ask so many questions!

I LIKE greens but I wonder: Why is it that rotten vegetables smell so much worse than rotten fruits? Rotten fruits can smell pretty bad too, but not compared to rotten vegetables. I don't think it's the sugar content, because carrots are fairly high in sugar. Rotten carrots still smell worse than say rotten cucumbers which are a relatively low-sugar fruit. Could it be the type of sugar?

I had a bad weird thing and a good weird thing. My bad weird thing was noodles, expecially as a teenager. Everyday after school I would cook up a pot of noodles and eat it with lots of butter (yuck!) and a glass of milk(yuck again!). Whenever I could, I would have noodles for breakfast too. My good weird thing was grass, like cynthia. When I was in grade school, I discovered that if you

Just thought I'd mention that buckwheat is not the same as barley. They are 2 separate things. Buckwheat is often called "kasha" in the US, but the word "kasha" comes from Eastern Europe and actually refers to any kind of porridge, buckwheat kasha being one of the most popular porridges.

Hi Troy Santos, I'm in Hawaii. I have no idea what kind of durian it is. I hope it's a good kind. I can't remember exactly how old the tree is, but I think it's at least 5 or 6, so maybe pretty soon we'll get fruit? It's a little over 15 feet, and it looks really healthy. We have room to plant more if we like it. We're lucky there's a fruit tree nursery just down the road from us, and they

Hi TroySantos, Citrus is in season here too, and it's the coldest time of the year. I'm not really knowledgeable enough about macrobiotics to know how citrus in the winter would fit into the general theory of it, but it's worth noting that citrus doesn't grow at all in the colder climates. Some say that citrus is an important winter food for prevention of winter cold and flu, so maybe ther

MAYBE chlorophyll is one of the most important substances that are found in greens but not in fruits and nuts. Chlorophyll is not considered an "essential nutrient", but chlorophyll is an essential ingredient for producing the oxygen that is the basis of all "higher " plant and animal life. It would seem to make sense that consuming chlorophyll in it's live form (contained

Hi Pyratekk, I'm just guessing, but your friend may have a hard time with greens. I do, but I try to eat them anyway because I get hungry after a few days if I don't. They help me stay satisfied on a raw food diet, and I like them. Even a diet high in a variety of fruit and nuts is very possibly lacking something without greens. I'm just basing that on my experience of getting so hun

I've been reading the posts from red_willow and TroySantos. I'd like to add the following: I think macrobiotic has something to do with being best able to handle the climate you're in at any given time. If the climate is cold, that is yin, so you're better off eating warm dry (yang) foods - or so the theory goes. If the climate is warm, that's yang, so you're better off eating juicy wet yin

Hi Coco. I agree with everything you said except for one thing. If the definition of a living food is whether or not it will grow, then fruit IS ALIVE, because if you plant a fresh fruit in good soil when the weather is warm, *presto* it will grow! The fruit of course is the food for the seed, but it is a LIVING food, made up of living cells that feed the seed and bring it to maturity unti

I've only eaten one durian ever. It was frozen from the health food store, and I ate it as soon as it thawed. I usually never eat fruit that's been frozen, but I was really curious because I'd heard so much about durian. I fully expected to really love the taste, but instead, it tasted SO horrible! I had to throw it away far out in the forest because after I tasted it, just the smell of i

I eat alfalfa sprouts with just about every salad. I'm also soaking and/or sprouting all my sunflower and sesame seeds. I think they're very healthy as long as they're eaten in moderation (like everything else). There may be some, like chick pea sprouts and possibly other sprouted legumes, that should be avoided or eaten only in VERY small quantities. I'd experiment a little to see if there

I agree with rawgosia's and arilraw's suggestions about sauna and sweating. Taylor's suggestion about putting vicks on the feet at night to help stop coughing sounds interesting. I wonder if eucalyptus oil and/or peppermint oil might work as well as vicks. I'm going to try that next time I get sick. Thanks Taylor! Another suggestion for coughing at night when you can't stop is the old-fa
