I just started the first day of my first ever water fast. I've done 30-day and shorter Master Cleanses before but never a water fast. There are so many great benefits... and this seems like the perfect time for me to do it. Google "benefits of water fast" to get your motivation going. I plan to go for 20 days. Join me!

Welcome, Miss Horse-Whisperer. I feel really great eating raw foods, too. I got an organic grocery delivery the other day and the guy unpacked all the produce onto my counter. It made me happy just to see all the bright colors.

Gee, I still can't get in. Seems like no one else is having this problem. I'll try it from work.

Hi Sachelle, I never even checked back on this post after the first couple of days. There are already potlucks in Chicago, but I was hoping to do one downtown. I don't own a car, so I love to find things in my neighborhood. Because I live downtown, it's not so difficult! I going to keep looking for people here. I met a waitress a few weeks ago who's raw, so I know they're out there! I wil

Are you planning to drive up the Columbia River Gorge and hike around the falls there? It's spectacular! Also, spend a Saturday or Sunday morning at Saturday Market under the Burnside Bridge. Not sure about where to find the best organic produce, but I believe Saturday Market might have some... in addition to some wonderful local crafts (some junk, too, but there are great finds and the market

My sinus problems went away when I went vegan, so I'm sure raw would cure it. I used to get chronic sinus infections and no longer have them. Another thing that helps is oil of oregano. You can buy it at the health food store. A few drops of this essential oil in a glass of water two or three times a day will do wonders. Good luck! Pam

I love to cut up a handful on my salads. It completely makes a salad that includes avocados and tomatoes. Some people rinse it, but I like it unrinsed. You just need to cut it into small pieces to make it easier to chew. You can also buy the flakes to use in pates, dips or whatever. It adds a salty taste. For a sea veg, it's pretty mild. Provides you with iodine and B12, too, I believe.

Yes, that's true, Suvine. But the recipes I'm referring to are dehydrated so probably best to follow the recipe... at least the first time! No worries, Sachelle. I think it's the way you say. (And, yes, Rawgetarian, I know that dehydrated food is not the best choice.)

I use carrot pulp to make mock tuna and carrot bread (as Pistachio notes above, only I use dates). For the mock tuna, add mayonnaise (made from almonds), celery and onion. I'm not crazy about straight carrot juice and I have to admit that I juice just to get the pulp! As for the juice, I pour it into my (very) green smoothies.

What sexist language we have! There is no male equivalent. I love the new word poltroon, though. Thanks! llulu, maybe you should have a talk with your husband to see what the real issue is. It's clear that he does feel threatened in some way. It sounds like it may go beyond whether or not he will be able to continue to eat the way he wants without judgement from you. Maybe he thinks you'

I also read somewhere that soaking lowers the fat content. But this doesn't ring true. It would be nice if we COULD rinse the fat away, though, wouldn't it? Perhaps the author means that by plumping the nuts up with water, the percentage of fat is lowered because the volume of nuts increases. In other words, one cup of soaked nuts has fewer fat calories than one cup of unsoaked nuts. (Becau

Hey Sachelle, The rules you note are the ones I've always followed. But, for some reason, I'm not sure that's what he means in THIS cookbook. Well, I'll just have to try my luck. Thanks for taking the time to reply! You are always so nice on the board. It's much appreciated! Pam

Abc123, I guess we sometimes get frustrated with the self-righteousness. I would bet that most of the people participating in this forum are of above average intelligence. Yes, we know that not all raw foods are good for you. However, raw is a journey for many of us. If you have arrived, fine, good for you. I applaud you. Many of us have not, however. And some of us are loving the journey t

Hi Julie, Green for Life author Victoria Boutenko says green smoothies will last up to 3 days. I keep mine for no more than 36 hours. Not sure about juices, but probably the same. Some foods last longer than others. Lemon juice is a preservative and when you see, for example, nut pates with lemon juice in them, they will last a few days usually. Also, sunflower seeds keep longer than th

There's a couple of things you can do. You can turn the oven on its lowest setting and then leave the door propped open 3 or 4 inches. The other thing you can do is make a cord with a light bulb attached to it. I've done this before but I loss the instructions and I threw the contraption away quite awhile ago. Anyway, the instructions didn't really help me. Standing in the Home Depot looki

I bought 10 copies of the video "Eating" from ravediet.com to pass on to family and friends. It is phenomenal and if you're thinking of buying it, do. The video does not actually say much about the specifics of the Rave Diet. But it does give plenty of support for a raw vegan diet from many different perspectives, including health, animal rights and environmental. When people ask me

Taylor, I finished by fast and the transition so I made the carrot bread last night. I went to sleep with it in the dehydrator and when I woke up in the middle of the night, I flipped it over (and ate some!). It was ready this morning. Sweet and moist like a carrot muffin. I ate it plain... and I have to admit it's all gone as of 2 hours ago. (I only made a third of the recipe, though.) Sup

That's going to be so much fun! I'm sure what you're taking is fine without the fruit salad. There will be SO much food there. Be sure to let us know what your favorites are. Get recipes!! LOL... I know there are raw potlucks in the Chicago area. When the weather gets warmer, I'm going to seek them out.

You're probably going to have to experiment. Usually ingredients are listed on the package in order of volume. But I'm not sure why coconut is so low on the list. But here's a guess as to the recipe. At any rate, I'm pretty sure these won't turn out bad! 1 c. almonds 1/2 c. cashews 1/2 c. coconut 1/2 c. honey 1/4-1/2 c. carob (and no, roasted anything is not raw but you can get raw car

Good luck with everything! You'll definitely get the hang of it. The Spicy Walnut Taco Meat is a staple for me. One thing I like do with it is make a layered dip by putting mashed avocado on a plate, followed by taco meat, then some fresh salsa. I it up on flaxseed crackers. Love it!

Try these. (I use salt and sometimes add 6 sun-dried tomatoes, soaked and pureed, and a garlic clove to the original taco meat recipe. However it is excellent without.) Spicy Walnut Taco Meat (modified Matt Amsden recipe modified by Kandace on goneraw.com) 1½ cups raw walnuts, soaked and ground in food processor 1½ teaspoons ground cumin 1 t. onion powder ¾ teaspoon ground coriand

Oooh boy... the food doesn't sound very appetizing, does it? I guess you have to go for the ambience! ;o) The baby food grinder idea is interesting. Wonder how well they work? Thanks for sharing this, Taz.

I have never had much to lose. But it is very difficult (nearly impossible) for me to lose weight because I am hypothyroid. I've broken through plateaus in the past by doing a 10 day lemonade diet (the Master Cleanser, which is not raw). Then once I come off the fast, I very careful watch my intake, particularly of sweet fruits, as other folks have noted.
