Has anyone here successfully sprouted soy? If so, how long did you soak and sprout for, and did you have any yummy problems after eating it? (I have a book that has instructions for raw tofu that I'd like to try (out of curiosity!)).

Vinny- it is very sad, I agree. There is a fruit & veg seller out on one of the main roads where I work and he throws fruit/veg away by the side of the road. I would be tempted to take it, but the way he disposes of it doesn't look very sanitary Cadburys were giving away free chocolate bars on the high street today. Why can't companies give away free fruit and veg!

Thanks for the replies everyone. EZ Rider: >One thing you can do to get fresh produce is to buy what is in season. In farmers markets, I trust buying what's in season but I was in a supermarket last year and they were selling strawberries from overseas when they were in season! The UK overflows with strawberries, and they were importing them! What a waste of resources! Windy- your En

Got some questions on fresh fruit/veg! Is there a way of telling how old the fruit/veg is in supermarkets/markets? Is there a cut-off point on selling produce e.g. do apples have to be sold with X days of being picked? Can fruit/vegetables seriously be considered 'raw' if they were harvested and stored a long time prior to being eaten? Obviously they're not cooked, but being raw isn't ju

Haha, syncronicity- yesterday I was debating on cutting out nightshades and then bam, I see this thread. Because of my allergy history, I think I'm going to trial cutting out them out. It's weird- I have gradually got to the point where I force myself to eat tomatoes if someone has put them on my plate (I dislike wasting food). I never felt this way about cooked tomatoes. It's not even lik

Nice article Fruit trees are awesome. I have a lovely apple tree at the end of my garden, and is slightly in shadow from a big sycamore tree. When I was a kid I used to think of that part of the garden as mysterious and fairytale-like I bought a fig tree the other day (it was looking sorry for itself + was on sale). I hope I can take care of it well enough to get some figs!

How well do aloe vera plants respond to having bits snapped off of them? i.e. how much can be broken off without killing the plant? I saw one in a garden centre sale the other day and almost bought it, but stopped when it occured to me I'd feel pretty mean breaking lumps off it!

Thanks for the answers y'all I LOVE dates- but wasn't sure if I was being a glutton eating them first thing (also wasn't sure if it was good/bad for digestion that time of morning).

I often buy people who love fresh produce fruit trees, herbs and plants or gardening equipment. If short of room, maybe a planter of herbs, peppers or chillies to go on a window sill so she can grow her own? One of my early bday presents last year from my boyfriend was a pomelo tree. I absolutely loved it! When I first discovered raw, he also bought me a saladacco (vegetable noodle-slicer)

For everyone saying how RB leaves and keeps coming back, you can't blame him. I bet we've all left forums before, then come back again hoping everything has evened out. I've seen a lot of nastiness in the raw food community. People being angry at eachother just because they have different opinions on b12, superfoods, gurus and variants of raw food diets etc. We're all supposed to be represent

The founder of the vegan society lived to be 95. He was cooked vegan. Given how much easier it is to eat vegan these days, I think (cooked) vegans are being exposed to more and more junk food, making the vegan diet appear more unhealthy than what it once was. Sugar, salt, fat. The stress 'trying' to be raw causes probably does my body worse than a weekly jacket potato.

Hi liberation! Halfway down the main China Town Street there are two grocery shops with fruit/veg outside (almost completely opposite eachother). The larger one has the thai coconuts (they're the white pointy version, not the ones still in their green shells- you can find the green shell ones in Tesco(!) when they're in season), longans, mangosteen etc. If you follow the street down to

Hi liberation- this place does juices and salads and stuff: There are a few salad/juice bars around Tottenham Court Rd/Picadilly Circus (though you may have to do a bit of walking to find them!) Planet Organic sells boxes of sprouts, detoxyourworld.com products, organic fruit and veg etc: China town (near Leicester Square) is good for durian, thai coconuts etc. These guys do fresh

I finally got to try a proper ripe squishy persimmon (after having giving up on 'sharon fruit' after many bad, astringent experiences). It was awesome! Kind of like some kind of aromatic orange-y mango-y jelly type fleshy stuff. I'm glad I didn't give up on it :-)

257. Flu...
My boyfriend has really bad flu at the moment. What fruits/juices can I recommend to him? The less fuss the better? He's been having trouble sleeping, having to wake up during the night to clear his throat etc? (Flu's doing its rounds at the moment- I was ill for only one day! Yayyy!).

When I used to make mushroom-based cooked meals where I would have to fry mushrooms at the start, they would give off the weirdest, *wrong* smell (you'll only smell it if you use a lot otherwise the oil will overpower it). Less of a mushroom, more of a horrible musty/bodily fluid smell! Weirdly, I only noticed this after being raw the first time. Obviously, raw mushrooms don't smell l

Day 2 of raw, and the raisins helped a bunch, thanks Lilian! Also been eating bananas, which help a lot too! Sunstar- you have hit the nail on the head. At the weekends, me and my partner usually try to go for a walk in a nice green nearby park. I often get hungry when walking round, but not ravenous for sweets! I tend to crave junk when I'm using the computer. I saw some news website (mayb

I'm confused... are we talking about the coconuts still in the green outer shell (which is a nightmare to cut through!) or those blocks of white coconut wrapped in cellophane (typically found in asian supermarkets)?

A few weeks ago I started eating 100% fresh fruit for breakfast and lunch and felt good. After doing a 3-shift work day, I was back on the caffeine and although I haven't had any caffeine incl. green tea for at least a week- I have triggered my sweet tooth again with a vengeance. It sounds ridiculous, but I feel like an addict. If there's no vegan choc or sweet drinks in the house, I start

The Milkmyths website is a good source of info: Links to breast cancer, skin problems etc "Research showed that women who ate more than one-and-a-half servings of red meat a day almost doubled their risk of breast cancer (3). Another study showed that women who ate lots of grilled, barbecued and smoked meats had a 47 per cent higher risk of breast cancer and those who skimped

yeah, olive oil + lemon juice + herbs = delicious just mix together in a small bowl, stick in the mushroom and leave somewhere (I put mine in the fridge). Since you're not using shoyu, you might want a salty-ish topping such as olives on there to even the taste out a bit.

I have had this when eating fruit after something that takes a long time to digest i.e. having something like melon or a smoothie on a heavier meal. Not pleasant! The look on my partner's face is pretty priceless though, LOL
