My organic chemistry professor has done a lot of research on garlic, and this is what she recommends for h. pylori. This is also backed up by peer-reviewed research. For example: "Phytoceuticals such as Korean red ginseng, green tea, red wine, flavonoids, broccoli sprouts, garlic, probiotics and flavonoids are known to inhibit H. pylori colonization" PMID: 18956590 "Amon

I love Jennifer Cornbleet's Raw Food Made Easy. I also like Carol Alt's The Raw 50, and probably RawVolution by Matt Amsden for my 3 current top picks.

Apparently 100 grams of sunflower seeds contain 90 International Units, whereas 100 grams of mushrooms contain 40 International Units of Vitamin D. (40 International Units = 1 microgram.)

I use 1 cup of soaked almonds to 3 cups of water. However, I've read that a 1:5 ratio also works.

I saw a fascinating program on the life of a fig tree awhile ago. If I remember correctly, some figs require wasps in order to develop properly. In this case, the wasp goes inside the developing fig, lay eggs, and then gets dissolved by enzymes. So...does anyone know which fig varieties do NOT require wasps?

Ani Phyo's mango cobbler recipe is terrific. It uses a date based sauce for the mangos, and a date-pecan topping too. I haven't known one person to not like it yet!

When broccoli (or radish) sprouts grow, is it normal for them to look fuzzy? I've been washing them 2-3 times/day and it hasn't been all that hot, so I hope they haven't gone off or anything!

To answer coco's question, I believe agave nectar is a lower glycemic load food than sugar. As such, it doesn't provide the same rush of glucose into the bloodstream, so it is a better choice for diabetics.

Dr. Neil Nedley in his book Poof Positive describes a study showing that if a person does not eat sugar for 12 hours, each white blood cell destroys about 14 bacteria. However, this decreases as sugar is consumed: 0 teaspoons sugar - 14 bacteria destroyed by each white blood cell 6 teaspoons - 10 bacteria 12 teaspoons - 5.5 bacteria 18 teaspoons - 2.0 bacteria 24 teaspoons - 1.0 bacteria

I have some older dates, and notice that there is white stuff on the outside. What I am wondering is whether this is just a form of date sugar that accumulates as the dates age, or whether it is a form of mold. If date sugar, then I have no problems eating them, but if mold, then I really don't want to get sick!

According to the USDA database, 1 Tablespoon of carob flour (presumably the same as carob powder) contains 18 calories, and 1 cup contains 229 calories. I'm assuming this is raw, since it doesn't say anything about it being roasted.

I am just wondering how much you are eating each day. I know that people with eating disorders, as well as athletes, often have no periods, since they are not eating enough to maintain their bodies needs. So I'm curious as to how many calories you are eating each day - to see whether the absent periods are due to eating raw food (with lots of calories) or due to the fact that calorie intake h

Well, I must admit that I wasn't up to the highest speed on the blender, but if I add more water (which I can see is definitely a GOOD thing to do!), how do you make it thick? I'm wanting to make a smooth cheesecake too, but if I add water, it won't be able to hold it's shape.

I made two thick, nut-based puddings with my prep 3. Even after letting it blend for a long time, it still didn't have that smooth feel. The raspberry pudding still had distinct seeds, and the carob/chocolate pudding didn't feel smooth either. What did I do wrong?

Thank you both for your advice! I had thought that the rubber stoppers were designed to keep the carafe in place once it was set on it, so I wasn't expecting any movement. I will definitely be using the tip to apply pressure to the carafe as it blends - I want it to last as long as possible!

Regarding the comment about water content, the change in values can't just be due to a change in water content, because chopping vegetables also helps to increase their carotenoid content, and the water content hasn't changed!

This may not be a popular thought, but steaming vegetables can actually increase their nutrient content - this is especially true for the carotenoids. For an example, a raw tomato contains 520 mcg/100 g of beta carotene. However, canned tomato sauce contains 1000 mcg/100 g of beta carotene. For lycopene, 1 cup of raw tomatoes contains 4631 mcg of lycopene. This figure increases dramatical

Another plus for carob is that it is a good source of calcium! 1 Tablespoon of carob has 28 mg of calcium, or 358 mg for 1 cup. To compare, 1 cup of whole milk only has 276 mg of calcium, according to the USDA food database. (Check out the following link to see what is in 1 tablespoon of carob: )

I grew up with carob, and so I like the taste of it. Most people who haven't grown up with it don't seem to like it though - raw carob definitely does not taste like chocolate, and you will most likely be disappointed if you are expecting it to be similar. While I mostly use carob powder, if I am making something for others, I will generally use real chocolate.
