Check out this article, "Why Are Twinkies Cheaper Than Carrots" and consider contacting your congressional reps: It's the same old info you know, that <1% of subsidies go to fruits and vegetables, but maybe others are beginning to wake up.

What a great idea! I really like your colorful background. It's cheery. Congrats on finding a way to motivate yourself and help others at the same time.

This is Otawairere Beach. It looks like black sand in this photo, but it isn't. In places it is rice-sized crushed shells that are smooth like beach glass. I used to walk there often, sometimes every day. When I did, I was often the only person on the beach. When you're there, you can't see a house, telephone wires or any buildings at all. The island that you can barely see on the horizon is

It's always a huge disappointment to pick apples that look pretty, but have hidden bruises or are mealy. I just talked with an apple grower. I asked about why some apples feel waxy. He said that that's not a coating sprayed on apples (which was a suspicion I had), but that it is a sign that the apple is older and not very fresh. He also said that some apples are stored in cool storage

Panchito, It's much wiser to make life choices based on thoughtful consideration of options instead of doing something just because it is what is expected by society or what has always been done. Having a broader perspective makes life richer. Best wishes in your new discoveries. Trive

Don't fruits and veges also ripen faster in a bag? (At least I've always thought that was true for ripening avocados, but maybe I'm just imagining that that is true?)

I like Wood for its earthiness. Stewart seems more mainstream (but you may want that to balance the unusualness of Jalan). Best wishes finding the one that's right for you.

I also like the sound of Jalan. And it looks/sounds good with Wood as a surname. Utan seems more unusual, but I like it too and if it is a middle name, most people won't know it, hear it or see it written, so what does it matter how out there it is? As another thing to be sure of... be prepared that having an unusual name will mean you'll have to spell it and pronounce it for people a lot.

What was the real purpose of this photo and how will it affect this boy in the future? It is fine for the mother (an adult) to give permission to be photographed with her breasts exposed, but I don't think it is fair to the child to publish his face. He is not old enough to make that choice and he may or may not want to have had this natural, but personal, photo published when he is older.

107. Re: Bear!
We have kept our farm in New Zealand (and definitely will be going back), but have moved back to Virginia for a few years for a business. One person is living in our NZ house and another is staying in the barn/studio. I miss my donkeys TERRIBLY, but couldn't afford to bring them and didn't want to subject them to such a difficult flight, etc. Fortunately, the guy staying in the barn adores t

My grandmother had a serious green thumb. I can remember her tossing her coffee grounds in her flower bed just outside of her kitchen door. (That was 50 years ago! But I still remember how lush everything she planted grew.)

Today a bear crossed the road right in front of our driveway! This is my first sighting of a black bear. What joy! It was a beauty!

Hi, Thisguy, After a year of LOVING being almost 100% raw because it made me feel great and cured my acid reflux symptoms, I began to experience hair thinning/loss. Although not especially vain, I am female and I panicked. I reintroduced a small amount of cooked foods back into my diet and the hair loss stopped immediately. Unfortunately, the thinned area hasn't regrown. I'm still an a

Are you eating enough? When I have cravings I eat some (a lot of?) fruit and the full feeling usually satisfies me. If that doesn't work, I'll have something with fat (avocado, nuts, seeds). Are you sure you're getting a good variety of nutrients?

Yes, red dragon, your ice cream meal sounds de-lish! I LOVE frozen bananas and use a food processor to blend them into an ice cream consistency. Sometimes I add other fruit, but often just have the one ingredient. It's great to find bananas when they have spots and are reduced price - - perfect for freezing and making your concoction.

Panchito, yes, I agree that much of society is unconscious about how they are living. Thinking about that can feel overwhelming, so I am glad that you are finding some support through the internet and forums. I believe that it is possible (and important) for us to have a positive influence on the world - even if it is just by being good role models. If we allow ourselves to feel too apart fr

I avoid the midday sun and when I am in the sun for a while I always wear a HUGE visor that is wide on the sides, not just above my eyes. As a teenager I had a severe sun burn on my shoulders and have been a fanatic about covering up in the sun ever since that. Unfortunately, they say that just one severe sunburn significantly increases the chance of skin cancer, so I watch moles carefully

I LOVE eating pomegranates, but have always had trouble knowing how to get into the darn things without cutting any seeds and losing precious juice. But they are had to know how to peel. All those membranes separating irregularly shaped sections. It seems that each time I buy one, I create a new and different way to get to those little gems. Most of my attempts are pretty messy, so I keep tryi
