In percentage terms they may appear similar but if you consider it in milligrams - the USRDA for magnesium is about 300-400mgs whereas for potassium it's 2000-3000mgs. So that equates to a very large difference in milligrams when you consider 15% of each of those numbers. The reason this is significant is because potassium, like calcium, inhibits magnesium absorption. That ratio in coconut is

Maui_butterfly & Simple Living - thank you for the youtube suggestions - a real class seems much more fun to me, though. Monson - yes that would be a good one except it appears to be defunct. Too bad, because it looks perfect. Itzdavey - That is a terrific listing, I would never have found that, thank you. I see there are several teachers in the NY area - maybe they hold occasional grou

Coconut isn't a magnesium food - it's a potassium food.

My guess as to why all this happens to some people when they switch to a raw food diet is that A.) Whole grains are high in magnesium, and since cooking is out, it's easier for raw foodists to just eliminate grains altogether rather than bother sprouting them (like me) and B.) magnesium is in alot of fortified SAD foods, so there may have been a previous hidden source of minerals in the diet that

Sensitive teeth, like other common health issues encountered in the raw food community (hair loss, weak digestion), is a symptom of magnesium deficiency. Eventually your body will store enough magnesium to enable you to eat a higher fruit diet. My teeth definitely look whiter and shinier now that I've been paying attention to a proper mineral balance. In the summer I noticed my teeth we

Hello, *Help* Does anyone know of an ACTUAL raw food (un)cooking class in New York? This is really annoying me, because I've been looking for 2 years, and they *appear* to exist, except in reality, there never seem to be any classes going on. A mirage, as it were. The only thing I know what to do with a fruit or vegetable is wash it then eat it. I'm aware this is the optimal way to eat and

I believe the reason so many people are addicted to chocolate is not because of its psychoactive properties, per se, but more because of its extremely high magnesium content. Given that most people are deficient in magesium, the popularity of chocolate is understandable. This is also why women crave chocolate before periods - magnesium levels drop in those few days. And why chocolate makes you fe

130. Re: hair
Elayne, yes me too! I love conditioner wash. I do the exact same process as the one you described above. I've been washing my hair with conditioner-only for about 7 months now, and my hair has never looked better. I have fine, highlighted hair and the conditioner wash method keeps my roots & ends looking uniform (with shampoo, my scalp would look oilier and the rest of my hair dry). I

The estrogen hormones in BC pills latch onto women's testoterone hormones, negating their positive effects such as sex drive. For many women, myself included, the BC pill kills my sex drive.

Hello, I wanted to share my story in hopes that it might help someone else. As a young, healthy, fit raw foodist for 2 years now, the last thing I ever would’ve expected was to develop heart problems. I thought you could only get heart problems if you were older and ate a standard western type diet. For months I had ignored tiredness, muscle twitches, skipped heartbeats and occasional ti

I found one answer at least to why some people are unhealthy on raw - it'll be a really long post but the short answer is magnesium. I learned that magnesium is the most important mineral to humans. It is found primarily in dark leafy greens, beans, nuts, seeds, and whole grains (and chocolate). For the past year of my raw food diet I wasn't eating a whole lot of those foods, as I suspect many ra

I'd go for the raw grains. Cooked sweet potatoes on a raw diet give my stomach a heavy, burning sensation. Whereas sprouted grains make me feel fantastic. Don't have too much experience with sprouted wheat myself though. It's not something I buy.

Yes F1 it did just occur to me that there could be alot of variables involved... and I have to say that in no way do I think that fruit is bad. And Dream Earth - all we have is anecdotes. There is no scientific proof of the best diet. Dr. Bass is still alive btw. He embarked on a quest to find the ideal diet when he was a teenager - that's where the trying of various diets comes in. To me e

Interesting - this is an excerpt from an article I found on fruit by longtime natural hygienist Dr. Stanly Bass in NYC. The complete article is entitled "Fruit - Friend or Foe" and it is quite lengthy. Here's the link if you're interested: FRUIT AND SLEEP At one time, in studying the harmful effect of excess carbohydrates and its connection to almost all diseases, even though I

I wouldn't go so far as to say that greens are SAFE... I find it worrisome that they're trying to tamper with fruits & vegetables at all. The regulations are for growing methods... and if that doesn't keep away the cattle ranch e. coli runoff, then what? Irradiation? The problem is they're barking up the wrong tree... but the USDA wants to show they're doing SOMETHING to protect the food supp

Sorry for the misleading subject header, I couldn't think of a better way to phrase it. Kwan, please keep posting your comments on here. Thanks to what your instructions, I'm going to call Congress. Even though irradiation isn't being proposed, I still consider their proposals unacceptable. I oppose any tampering with my food supply.

I wrote my own letter to them, here's what I wrote: Dear USDA, Thank you for the opportunity to comment. I am writing to voice my objection to the proposed regulations for the handling of leafy greens for several reasons. For one thing, didn't the e. coli that contaminated leafy greens come from cattle ranch runoff? So why punish the victims? There is scientific evidence to show that the

In response to the e.coli outbreaks last year in bagged spinach, the USDA has proposed federal regulations on ALL leafy greens. Deadline to submit comments to the USDA is just a few days away - DEC 3rd. Here's the link to the article, which contains a form letter that can be sent to the USDA opposing their mandates.

ooh Gary you have to read the book Sugar Blues. I used to love sugar, and knew about the book long before I read it - I guess I just had to get fed up enough with not being able to resist sugar in order to actually feel motivated to read it (the book far exceeded my expectations, I had no idea what a great story I was missing out on). But somehow my mind still always knew that book would be my

I think the reason so many people do well on high-protein, low carb is that it's still healthier than the SAD diet they were eating before. For me, I've always eaten reasonably healthy, so when I did Atkins I actually gained weight & cellulite in my butt & thighs which I thought was totally gross, and I lost weight in my breasts. I did however experience some health benefits from cutting

I totally agree with the oxygenated water statement. "Clean" and "dirty" are really just a matter of positive or negative electron charges. Clean means more negative ions, and dirty means positively charged. The cleanest water is from glacial arctic areas - it's water that has more negative ions, and thus much less of it is needed to quench the thirst. There is a bottled water
