So it seems that you have not actually analyzed your nutrient intakes and are buying into propaganda from nonscientific sites. I will have to remind you that this is a vegan forum. Your diet is full of toxins: PCBs, heavy metals, dioxins, salmonella, and a variety of parasites (nematodes, worms, etc.) that are probably still alive when you eat your fish corpses because exposure to extreme

Well, if you should be interested enough to delve into it, you would find remarkable consistency on the whole among the EU, American, and Asian RDAs for micro- and macronutrients. There are some differences, most notably calcium, but most of the others are pretty close among diverse background (expected) diets. Although the body has a profound ability to adapt to both lower and higher intakes

Here is an example of fruit vs. greens. To be fair I should have included some non-sweet fruit. A non-sweet fruit recipe would be somewhat in between these two extremes. leaves: 58 grams of each of arugula, beet greens, chard, chicory greens, collards, kale, romaine, green leaf lettuce, and red leaf lettuce fruit: one cup (about 240 ml) each of apple, banana, blackberries, blueberr

I don't think I've ever had food poisoning, either raw or cooked. Last week when I bought loose spinach, the cashier tried to talk me out of it! I was very sad this week when I saw the empty space on the shelf where the spinach was supposed to be. I guess it's safest to grow your own greens, that way you can control what feeds them. I'd rather feed them with my own homemade compost. I h

Yes, it does sound great, thanks! Do you use the Eden Foods brand? I will have to see if my grocer carries it.

I think you should contact Dr. Diane Barrett of UC Davis. in the Dept. of Food Science and Technology. This is her specialty. She can point you to some appropriate papers. PS I went to UF, too!

Johndela, I would like to see your daily diet and calcs, just to double check. It is difficult, but not impossible, to satisfy all the requirements (except for B12 and D2 which must be addressed separately) with only fruit. It is certainly less difficult when one is very heavy and active, which would imply a much greater level of consumption. 3000 kcal or more of daily fruit is much more like

It isn't detox. When it comes to adverse effects from a raw vegan diet, "detox" is just a roundabout way of saying deficiency. It's more likely lack of cysteine + methionine. These are amino acids that may be in short supply in typical raw vegan diets. They don't have to be, though. You can use the tools at nutritiondata.com to help you find more foods to put in your diet that w

Donate your tv set to Goodwill, tv is mostly junk anyway. If there's something you want to see, you can ask a friend to record it for you. I get my news from the internet and I check out my DVDs from the public library. I don't buy magazines anymore, either. I would like to think that I am free of adverts and their evil influences, but there are so many of them online now, even on this forum.

I get my groceries from my local independent grocer. She buys a lot from local growers. So it's sort of like a hybrid between a big grocer and a farmer's market. I usually go twice a week and I get mountains, for one person and two large dogs. I hardly every have spoilage. I have learned to time my purchases in amounts so that I use it up. Usually the last day or two I am out of something, tho

Usually leaves have a higher concentration of vitamins and minerals than fruits on a calorie for calorie basis. Leaves tend to be higher in protein, also. Fruits usually are low in some amino acids (lysine, cysteine, methionine), calcium, and zinc, to name just a few. It is easier to satisfy your micronutrient needs when you incorporate lots of leaves in your diet. Also leaves probably ha

You still need to pay attention to your requirements: calories (many people fail to get enough on raw diets) essential amino acids (proteins) essential fatty acids vitamins (many vegans fail to supplement with b12, which is a mistake in the long run). minerals fiber. If fail to meet your requirements, you will eventually have problems, even on raw, and some raw diets are so restrictive

I think there is very strong evidence that raw vegetables are the most anti-cancer protective foods, period. They ought to be shouting that from the rooftops. RE: gm foods, in theory, genetic modification is intended to increase crop yields and pesticide resistance so that there will be fewer hungry people, so I can see why some people are for it. In practice, well, such things never work out

Of all that you mention, the only thing I'd consider is vegan DHA if I were pregnant or lactating. But even then, I remain skeptical. I do take B12 and D2 though, because the evidence is extremely convincing for B12 and somewhat less so but still compelling, for D2.

Variety in my salads works for me. I think they taste better when they are very complicated. I use 3-4 different types of lettuces, including radicchio for color, tomato, cucumber, any one of swiss chard, beet greens, or spinach, arugula or bok choi or kale, bell peppers of different colors, yellow and green summer squash, carrots or sweet potatoes, beets, corn kernels, Italian parsley, purple on

> If you eat flax seeds with coconut oil, your body will increase the percentages and make higher amounts of EPA and DHA. This is not correct. A high saturated fat intake (such as from coconut oil) will hinder conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA. ref: Int J Vitam Nutr Res. 1998;68(3):159-73. Saturated fats should be restricted for optimal conversion.

This is obvious to most people here but some have in the past insisted that nutrients aren't available in green leaves unless they are blended or pureed. That appears not to be true: "Researchers found that even one serving of raw vegetables a day moved people closer to getting the recommended amounts of vitamins A, E, B6 and folic acid." And more = better. The abstract for

What we have here are some ill-informed non-vegans who invent these mythologies to justify their personal choices, who then construe information as "attack." Well, don't shoot the messenger! I didn't make these ugly realities. And when such informed people become flippant (responses with "LOL" it shows they don't get it. Such people should watch the DVD "Earthlings

Yes, the highly colored ones are almost always better choices than the white ones. Yukon gold has more carotenoids than the white potatoes. ALso, sweet potatoes (orange or purple) have more vitamins and minerals than regular potatoes.

I'm of average weight - 5'3" and 105 - and I wonder how underweight I should have to be to lose fat in my face so that it doesn't look so hideous. The three important omega3 fatty acids for humans are akgha-linolenic acid (ALA) (18:3) eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and (20:5) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). (22:6) The numbers in parentheses are-- first number: length of carbon chain in the fatty acid second number, after the colon: number of double bonds. We call ALA (18:3) the short chain omega3 and EPA (20:5) and DHA (22:6) the

Thanks, she is a wonder and a marvel and something we can all strive to attain. Definintely the most beautiful body ever at such an age. Her phototype VI skin gives her a significant advantage also. A caucasian person at that advanced age will be significantly more prune-like with lots of sagging and wrinkling unless they use sun protection.

Yes, there are some reasons to avoid high fat diets. I try to keep my fat intake at or below 25%. In this study, several diets were tested on rats with regards to protection from squamous cell carcinoma (which people get from excess ultraviolet radiation). The diet that was most protective was like Ann Wigmore's but with very large doses of supplemental vitamin C. All raw food. Howeve

I am with Jose. I don't think there is anything more potently protective and nutritious than a huge green salad every day. Sometimes I have two of them per day! Your problems might have something to do with the greens and other vegetables you are using. I concentrate on lettuces (6-10 cups), which are mild, supplemented with cruciferous (kale, collards, cabbages) and goosefoot leaves (spinach,
