I make my own caramel sauce: I take some dates, add some water, and blend to desired consistency! It really does remind me of caramel sauce. Then I pour it over frozen banana-through-the-Champion ice cream. YUM! Love, Uma

I used to only be able to eat bananas in a smoothie or with dates or something. But within the last year I've started enjoying them on their own. There is something soothing about them to me. I think they have some happy nutrient in them or something. Most of the year if other stuff is available I will do that. But there are a couple months in Winter after persimmons and before mangos, where the

I used to be pre-diabetic and plan my meals around the glycemic index. I barely ate fruit at all for several years. That was a miserable, unsweet time for me! I've since tossed all that out the window. I eat sweet fruit every day, all day and the GI means nothing to me anymore. I found out my fat intake affected my blood sugar more than my sugar intake. There is a life outside the glycemic index

Yeah, blended is awesome because you can have sweet smoothies when you want, or savory soups when you want, or pudding, or ice cream.... there are lots of options. Some people go on healing diets where they only eat blended raw foods for a period of time and get so much benefit... imagine if you ate like that indefinitely. You'd probably save so much energy from digesting that you'd have to use t

I found the freeze-dried stuff at an Asian market in Seattle. They also have it on this website but with shipping it's pretty expensive (I did it once). I don't know a lot about choosing the perfect ripe durian because most of my experience is with frozen durian which is pretty much tree-ripened and then frozen immediately. With fresh I know that green outside is less ripe and tan/brown is mo

OH man yeah I used to do the whole colonic thing, and the enema thing, and the "smooth move" tea thing, and the psyllium shakes thing, yada yada yada. I've certainly been around the block several times as far as being prone to getting stopped up! Who knew that lettuce and fruit were such natural regulators? Now what I notice is that when I do start to feel sick, there is a correlation w

When I was transitioning back and forth from cooked to raw to cooked to raw etc., I noticed that when I started eating grains again I got constipated. So I started eating a LOT more lettuce with my cooked meals and this seemed to do the trick. Also I gradually increased the amount of fruit during the day until I was eating fruit all day, then a cooked dinner with lots o' lettuce. The lettuce seem

Yeah they say when you are craving grains you haven't gotten enough carbs -- which for raw means fruit! When first raw it's easy to not realize just how much fruit you gotta eat to get enough calories. Love, Uma

Bravo for taking the first plunge! My first few experiences with the King were not at all enjoyable so it sounds like you're off to a better start than I was. Now durian is one of my faves. Eventually you may start to experience the "durian high". Ripe durian is nice and creamy in texture (not chewy) and sweet, although some Thai folks enjoy underripe durian. How available is durian

Rawrrr, that is such a gorgeous picture. I love it. I don't have experience with gardening indoors (except for garden starts in the spring) but I have a winter bed in the ground inside my greenhouse, and it does great with lettuce, spinach and cilantro. Also there are some greens and veggies that do great in winter weather, though most of them I don't enjoy raw (except occasionally like kale

Cooked oils, spices, salt, animal products, refined foods esp. refined sugars/flours, and poor food combining were big triggers for me. low fat high fruit raw vegan diet with food combining seems to be the ticket for me. Nothing I ever did on the outside worked. Only cleaning out from the inside healed my skin. If he is going to keep eating some cooked, he could at least do a low vat whole foods

HAHAH I do that too, I end up eating a lot of it right from the food processor as I'm making it. Then I try to make nori rolls but then I end up eating half of it from the bowl as I'm making them... so comes the idea to just chow down on a big bowl of cauli. Haven't tried mashed taters yet, you mix the cauli with some kind of nut, right? I want to try the gravy thing, that sounds good. The

Shann, sounds like your process is going great! The first time I went raw I was so concerned about being 100%, it was really to my detriment, emotionally and physically. It was so dogmatic, and I was eating all this complex raw food cuisine that really wasn't serving my body. The latest transition process I went through, I let myself go back to cooked food for a couple years, gradually inc

So I ended my persimmon party on Monday night, after 13 days of feasting. I had a head of romaine lettuce. Then I ended up eating more persimmons! They're just so dang good. The next day I ate a variety of fruit and today I'm having my first veggie/fat meal. I feel the cleansing starting to slow down and it's a nice feeling. I am still able to sleep longer than I'm used to. I feel like I got

yeah they're black. it doesn't take too long, only a few minutes, before the mix of chia and water turns to gelatinous goo. i had to experiment with how much water was necessary because the seeds soak the water up so fast, but then i don't want to add too much water to the cauli mix or it'll be too wet on the nori sheet. it's a fine balance! love, uma

Today is day 10. My mind has been craving other things.. mostly tangerines and nori rolls. But in truth, each time I sit down to eat a meal, I really enjoy it because it's so yum. It's the mind boredom thing of having the same thing each time. But I continue because I'm still getting benefit from it. I have been experiencing a lot of cleansing in the last few days: one day of nausea which

Thanks for the raw popcorn link (i wanna try it!!) and the mashed taters suggestion. Those are great ideas! I occasionally will mix a head of cauliflower with a Tbsp of soaked chia seeds in the food processor to make a raw rice for nori rolls. But then as I'm making it, I end up eating a lot of the cauli mix with a spoon. I eat mostly fruit myself, but there is something about the taste of caulif

no can't say that it has. i accidentally got a chalky bite today, i don't enjoy that feeling! troy: i wonder, are the toxins in the skin? i've noticed lately that i enjoy sucking out the guts of the hachiya and leaving some of the skin behind.. sometimes it's even hard to chew completely so i spit it out. mocha: i take it you love durian? me too. love, uma

yeah there are many variations, you can fill it with a pate or avocado and lots of cut up veggies, sprouts & shredded lettuce. you can even mix cauliflower and a bit of soaked chia seeds in the food processor for a raw rice! love, uma

No, I was in SF vacationing for the weekend. But the markets there are definitely a fun aspect of the trip. I go down a couple times a year. It's about a 4 hour drive. With a friend, it's not so bad. Today is day 5. Yesterday I ate only fuyus, today only hachiyas. I notice more calm and less excitement about eating when I do it this way rather than eat whatever kind whenever I want. Yeah my

I notice that I can buy either really expensive "organic, raw" nori from various vendors, or really cheap "untoasted" nori from asian markets. Does anybody know if there is really such a thing as organic nori? What is the production process like? Does everyone get it out of the ocean the same way, or do organic nori farms section it off and do something different with it? I am

By the way the other weekend I was at a market on Haight St. in SF, between Ashbury & Clayton. They had organic hachiyas displayed out on the street and there were lots of ripe and ready ones. They were 69c each but i bought a couple flats and he gave them to me for 50c each. maybe you could get even cheaper for ones that are soon to be thrown out. This is a way better price than I get up her

Day 4. Feeling some cleansing going on. Gentler than a fast but feeling it. I noticed that my appetite gets stimulated by the variety between hachiya and fuyu. It's not the same as a true mono fast where you only are eating one thing and there is no thought of what's next on the menu. So: I'm going to see if I can have enough ripe ones to only eat one variety in a day. Today it was fuyus, tom

Cherimoya, I hope to visit Thailand someday soon while durian is in season. m, are you surprised that we're both named "fig lady"? I'm not! sunshine, thanks! Love, Uma
