Tamuka, we have the exact same taste! And Ravel--yum. Wasn't the music just perfect for the film? If you haven't heard his piano concertos, you should.

What else have you really liked? I saw a British one that was kind of interesting: My Summer of Love. Also: An Education. Both were basically the same core theme, one's lover turns out to be not exactly as expected. But isn't that the case with almost every interesting film?

I couldn't finish it, either, in fact, I only got about 15 minutes in before I had to take it out of the DVD player.

arugula,

Ravel, Debussy, and Satie are tied for current favorite composer of mine : )

I was thinking of seeing "An Education," but it sounded so much like the plot of the old 60s movie, "The Girl with Green Eyes," that I haven't bothered. Also, that Peter Sarsgaard makes me uneasy me for some reason . . . I think I saw "My Summer of Love." Must've loved it--that's why I remember it so clearly, ha-ha.

I am obsessing over Schubert at the moment.

Didn't see that one. But maybe they are similar. The
girl in "An Education" was so bright and held so much
promise, I think that is what made it so interesting.
Also that when she realized what the guy was at first,
when she realized he was a thief, she overrode her
natural inclination to flee. I think it's very interesting
how many of our problems would be solved if we listened to
our guts the first time. To say nothing of how their affair
started in the first place--he picked her up because she was
holding a cello in the rain and he feigned concern for her
cello.

The first time I saw him was in "Shattered Glass" in which
he played the good guy. It was an understated but magnificent
performance. I didn't like him so much in "Year of the Dog" (which
could have been a great vegan movie but wasn't).

Just saw Mixed Nuts for the first time last night on Comcast, for free, no less!, with Steve Martin, Adam Sandler and a host of other great actors. A really zany feel-good comedy that takes place in Venice Beach, CA. with a host of hilarious but sweet and lovable characters. I loved it.

"Sense and Sensibility" has to be somewhere in the 'top 10'. Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Kate Winslet were all excellent. The Jane Austen 'style' suits me very well. I guess I'm a Romantic at heart. Anyone else?.....WY

still haven't watched it, too busy right now... can't be any worse than the cook, the thief, his wife and her lover though. that's gotta be a top 10 for me, maybe even top 5. anyone seen it? so good.
brave new world with that angry actor colin something or other was fairly gorgeous too. an interesting take on the pocohantis story, slim on dialogue but huge on gorgeous visual shots.

coco,

Do you mean "The New World"? I watched it for Christian Bale; I'd watch him in anything. I thought it was very dreamy, and had beautiful nature shots. A taxing film, but soothing.

"Babette's Feast" involves the preparing of authentic , not "mock," turtle soup. 'nuff said.

That one was instrumental in turning me into a veg.
I still have emotional scars from it! Last time I
checked, it was on youtube in its entirety. Not for
the sensitive.

Yes, the visuals were stunning. The girl was gorgeous, I
read she was an inspiration for the CGI girl in Avatar
(which I really enjoyed btw).

Ha-Ha! I just watched Talladega Nights on TV and was surprised by how much I was laughing!

My new Current Favorite Movie is Lars and the Real Girl. It could have been snarky and unbearably whimsical, but it was actually very touching. I highly recommend it.

I just watched the 1957 version of "12 Angry Men", starring Henry Fonda, plus 11 other gifted actors. It reminded me of the Raw Lifestyle, where we can be convinced of one thing, when actually another thing is true. In the movie, the first vote by the jury was 11 guilty to 1 not-guilty. Further discussion lead each of the 11 (one by one) to a not-guilty vote. It was very well done. Don't be afraid to change your position (vote) if the conditions warrant.....WY

This year I saw...

Dreamscape : cheezy sci-fi movie with Dennis Quaid which I like)

Precious : story of impoverished girl who tries to rise above her circumstances, I thought it was well done)

The Road : well done apocolyptic movie, the actor who played the son was great

and I watched My Cousin Vinny again, it's a classic.

FUR!!! Wowzers. An imaginary portrait of Diane Arbus. Knocked my freaking socks off, yikes! The carnival/circus theme was astounding. I want to, no, I NEED to live in that apartment. And now I want a coat made out of hair too. I mean, if I'm gonna move to fantasy land I might as well go all the way!

I watched Babette's Feast, it was good. I've worked in so many restaurants that the food scenes didn't gross me out too much. Except for the bird in the pastry nest, that was ucky.

I am making sock monkeys and watching movies to past the stitching time. Tonight was Benjamin Button, I cried. It was lovely.

I went and saw Avatar a few months ago and felt so strongly about it that I wrote a review for the benifit of any friend who might want my opinion on it. I just realised that this thread was here and that I could share it with you guys, so here it is :

I am not a movie reviewer and nor do I care to write them, but Avatar had such a profound effect on me that I've made an exception this time. It seems to me that the popularity of games such as WOW and all of the others derived of the RPG genre, have now inevitably caught up with those in the movie making industry. Avatar is another page in this tome of statistically favoured formular movies, never straying too far from the concepts that have been proven to sell. While being a leader in its ability to stun the viewer who has an appreciation for technical achievement or finesse, as far as the plot, physics, characters and consistancy go it is the same old same old hollywood rubbish.

The premise that the human race has mastered interstellar travel through the use of combustion engines and cryogenic stasis is shaky enough on its own, let alone the fact that the movie would have us believe that we use it for the purposes of industrial mining. The fact that the time taken for most intestellar distances from earth begin in the millennia which would make any economic motive absurd, is only the start of a list of surreal notions about as fantastic as the $ 500 million budget that it has been claimed to have cost. There are many things within its 2 1/2 hour length which I found personally inspiring being a fan of all things fantasy, but essentually to me it felt like a very well polished but bad mix of WOW, Armageddon and Aliens. In conclusion I didn't think much of it !
