I remember reading in Nora Lenz's raw story that she was raw for five months before she had her first cleansing event, and it wasn't until then that her weight began to change. Everyone is different, two weeks isn't much time. Plus, it sounds like you are very fit to begin with. I am sure you will see results when your body is ready.

Dear Phyllis: First, I want to give you a big giant cyber-hug! Then here is my two cents. I think the important question to get clear in your own mind is to figure out exactly how being overweight has benefitted you so far. It's easy to list all the negatives, but in fact, there are some positives that we don't always like to think about. For instance, when you are overweight, some peopl

Thank you so much for you replies everyone. Bryan - I don't have time to listen to your yoga link right now, but I will as soon as I have time. Meanwhile, as a novice to all this, I notice there are different types of yoga. I did try Bikram yoga a few years ago, and I didn't really like it all that much. It started out good, but after a few times, I really stopped liking all that heat. C

Hahaha, fruitgirl, that was absolutely hilareous. If my friend is ever willing to consider it, this may be one of the first things I ever show her. I try not to tell people what to do if they don't want to know, and at this point, she is very happy with what she is doing. Utopian Life: You are right, but I have to say one thing in her defense. A typical meal for her is a chicken breast o

I mentioned to a friend the other day that I am interested in trying yoga. She was very glad to hear it and offered to give me a bunch of yoga DVD's of hers that she bought and decided she would never use. Turns out that every time she does yoga, she feels really ill the next day. She works out A LOT, does resistance training and cardio and follows an Atkins-style diet, never saw anyone so

I'm so glad her forehead is so nice - she won't go to a hairdresser nor will she let anyone touch her head because it is so bumpy! (except me) So I have learned a lot about hairdressing the past few years, haha!!

Thank you so much pakd4fun and coco. This one was born with a challenge - she had a condition called craniosynostosis, which would have caused her head shape to become quite horrifically deformed had it not been corrected. I often shudder to think how different her life would have been had she not had that option. She had to have a very scary brain surgury as a baby to break open her sku

Brian: Please be kinder to yourself - 90% raw is a phenomenal achievement! I was 50 - 90% raw for over two years before I finally took the plunge to 100%. Maybe your body isn't ready yet, wouldn't it feel better to listen to that and allow yourself to go at the pace that works best for you? When you are ready, you won't feel deprived of anything. In the meantime, if you really want some

Wow Coco, she is just so adorable. I remember when my kiddies were that little, it was such a special wonderful time! (still is though!) Thought I'd share one of mine. My youngest daughter has had braces for two years and just got them off. I don't think I saw her smile once when she had them on! Every time she smiles at me my heart skips a beat, how lovely to have her smile back!

So sorry to hear of your bad experiences on that other board - it's often the case, when we make changes to improve our own lives that we meet with the most resistance and criticism from the very people we would have expected absolute support and understanding from. You are such an inspiration, to take charge of your own health like that. It's rare for people to take that on, as said by other

Dr Rozalind Gruben did a wonderful talk about how being raw brings your emotions to the surface (and sometimes causes you to backslide) I found this to be very inspiring if you have a little time to listen to it:

Well, I don't know if this would work for anyone else, but in terms of giving up some of my old favorite foods, I have always found I have a strong mental resistance to telling myself I may not ever have something that I really like, and it usually sets me up for failure. So instead, I found it worked better to tell myself that of course I was allowed to eat my forbidden food. But there was o

It is so sad that people are so completely misinformed about nutrition. And of course they are very untrustful of the things they don't know, so you immediately become a suspect to them. I would have to agree, you won't be able to argue and win anyone over to your point of view on this, they just don't have the knowledge to understand what you are trying to say. I hope you have other opti

My kids tell me they are known for having the best lunches at school, and complain that too many people beg them to share. But... My son won't take tubs of salad or veggies like the girls do. He needs it to look like a sandwich, so he prefers a wrap. Not totally raw, but still a pretty good choice I think. Some things are too weird, like nori sheets, so they don't like to take those, but

Thanks Bryan, great advice as always. I guess I will start by mentioning that I avoid meat and dairy because of the bone health issues, and leave it at that for now. Just plant that little seed and maybe print off an article or something that really backs it up. Do you know if osteo can be reversed on a raw diet and do you know of any examples? She is a tiny lady, and probably in her late

Does anyone have information about raw and osteoporosis? I think I am looking for specific small steps. A really great lady I know tells me she has osteoporosis. She can't imagine how she has been cursed like this because she grew up on a farm and was raised on so much dairy. It broke my heart because I know it is probably that very fact which is the cause of the problem. I am sure that

It seems to me that how this got started - (this business of the state intervening with the custody of the overweight child) Wasn't there a case last year in the UK where a dad sued for custody of his child (I forget if it was a boy or a girl), because the mom was not making the child exercise and not following healthy dietary practices and the child was morbidly obese. The father won custody

You are so right about the marketing ploys coco - I don't know if you have ever had this experience, but it used to surprise me very much when my kids were toddlers and they would pick up boxes of things that I was certain they had never had before, but somehow, they just "knew" they liked those junky things. The people who design those packages are evil geniuses! The nutrition t

Amazing, who would have ever predicted that this would even be an issue. Even as little as 20 years ago it would have been laughable. Depending on your point of view, it seems to me that fat-laden unhealthy nutrient-free food has a way of being very addicting. If you factor that into a situation where there isn't a lot of nutritional education or knowledge, it's a recipe for disaster, and it

When my second daughter was in third grade, I volunteered to be a parent assistant for a nature walk her class went on. I remember having to sit behind the group as they went on ahead, because one of the little girls just couldn't keep up. She was quite overweight, and was breathing heavily and had to sit down for a rest. This was a gentle hour long walk, should have been no big deal for a b

I like La_v's idea, but there is a program for schools which I am very impressed by. You may have heard of it, it is called the Virtues Progam. They focus on one virtue at a time, give the kids opportunities to actually practice each virtue whenever possible, and making sure to recognize good deeds always. They learn about things like loyalty, compassion, responsibility, generosity, etc. So

Suppose your husband found a new religion and decided that it was the ultimate path in life. And it entailed changing almost everything about the way you live. How would you like to have him following you around critizing everything about you? Especially if you weren't even interested in that particular religion? Would you resent it? Because in this scenario, he probably believes just as s

My suggestion is: Leave him alone about this. If he isn't asking for your help, and if he isn't ready to make any changes right now, then he will be able to do nothing but resent your interference with his life. Nobody wants another person to tell them what to do if they haven't asked for it. Nor would you. Do the things that are right for you, set a good example, and maybe one day he wi

Sundancer is exactly right. You may want to consider a good talk with the mom. And here is the appoach I would take: I would contact the mom, and let her know that I wanted to talk to her directly, mom to mom about what is going on. I would assure her that I was not angry but rather that I was approaching her in a role of total support. Being a parent is a very hard job sometimes, and ther

I forgot to add I would absolutely point out that everything that boy says and does is a reflection of what kind of person that boy is, and not a reflection of what sort of person your son is. Important to remember that.

I think my first thing would be to sit down with your son and talk it over with him. (no giving advice, just collecting as much information as possible) Find out just how seriously he is taking this. It may be that the other kid is relatively harmless and is just blowing off steam and your kid might realize that. In that case, it is just a matter of letting it blow over. Meanwhile, it is a g
