I had a symptom - a dimple where there shouldn't have been one, but I had only around that time discovered a bit of cellulite on my derrierre, so I figured it was just one of those unpleasant symptoms of aging. Ya know, turning 40 and all. So for all you women out there - any change at all, even if you had never heard of it before - go and get it checked. Breast cancer is not just about lumps

patty: So sorry to hear about your sister, that was a hard journey for her I am sure, and for you as well. Also, hope I haven't scared anyone away from mammograms, they are probably a good thing! Ditto for self exams, no matter what the controversy you might hear. I bet not many people get bad news on their very first exam.

I was 40 and decided to go for my first mammogram. The breast cancer was so widespread they couldn't find any breast tissue that wasn't affected, so I needed a complete mastectomy. They also took my lymph nodes, and they were mostly infected. I don't know if I am any better informed about health and nutrition now than I was then. I was a ten year vegetarian then, not raw (not always vegan),

When they told me I had cancer and that it had spread so aggressively that I probably would not survive, I was so surprised by my reaction. I would have expected to be afraid, but I wasn't. I knew everything would be fine. I don't know if fine means you will live or you will die, but either way, I knew everything would be fine. I felt sad that my kids were still so young, so they would miss

Dulset: I have found nectarines (and peaches) to be very hit an miss for years, it's a real treat on the rare occasion that I find a good one. And I haven't come across any seeded ones yet, nor have I tried any organic ones. Cantaloupe is another unpredictable one. It's great that I still find the occasional perfect one, but you just can't tell until you try it. I have a cherry tree in my

This is getting very weird - I've had some problems with fruit lately, only once in a while, but it is so bizarre. Some time ago, I picked up some cherries. I think they were from Chile or someplace, it was near the end of winter, and I was getting tired of the smaller selection of fruit over the winter. The strange thing was, they looked like perfect delicious cherries. They were the ri

I live in Canada (west coast), and I have to admit, I am not sure where most of the watermelon in the grocery stores comes from here - I will have to pay closer attention. I am pretty sure it is not locally grown.

I'm glad you posted this. I have also noticed that the watermelons this year don't taste nearly as good to me as they did last year. I didn't know if they were actually worse, or if my tastes have changed. I sure hope they go back to normal next year! But .... I sliced up a cantaloupe this morning, and it was one of those perfect extraordinary amazingly sweet ones that you get once

19, 18, 16 (my daughters) and my son, 15. When my oldest daughter was in Grade 11, she befriended a girl who was very seriously involved in drugs. It was terrifying. Money and other items started being stolen from our house. My daughter would disappear for days on end, and I had no way to find her. Sometimes I would find emails with scary references to wild parties and drugs - I was sure I

I totally would have agreed with coco when my kids were little, but the teenage years have taught me otherwise. No matter how well meaning you are, my kids would consider this to not only be tattling, but a complete betrayal of trust. I wouldn't risk it. Once your kid thinks they can't trust you when they tell you stuff, they will stop telling you stuff. Besides, different parents have differ

Kids are so great.... My mind is boggling about your little boy making such a big journey at the young age of only 12 - it must have been the most amazing experience for him. Mine got to do an exchange at about that age from BC (I'm in Canada) on the west coast to Quebec, and one of my daughters did another exchange in tenth grade. For them it was especially interesting, because they were

I totally hear you and feel for what you are going through - it can be so hard to know just how to approach stuff like this with your kids, but it sounds to me like your instincts are excellent. I find that my kids don't like to be dictated to by me, and they aren't at all impressed by the fact that I have somewhat more life experience than they do or any of that stuff (what a surprise hey?) Good point La_v, To tell the truth, mine didn't hold its shape real well when I sliced it, but I didn't really care. I suppose if I wanted to serve it up to company, I might try adding a little psyllium or something to thicken it a bit more and of course chilling it for a while. I'd probably also try to garnish it maybe with just a little grated lemon peel or coconut or something. Even

Well, my house is raw and SAD, so the choice is there, but for the most part, my kids generally eat tons of raw. (It's pretty easy to use their laziness in my favor - if it comes to a choice between heating up food and having to clean up after or grabbing the bowl of cut up fruit from the container in the fridge, they will almost always pick the least amount of effort, ie the fruit!) But even

I'll try my best: First of all, I presoaked about half a cup or a bit more of medjool dates for a couple of hours. Then, I ground up the pecans in the food processor first, fairly fine. (about 2 cups), (but I am sure almonds or walnuts would be just as good, so long as you can ground them up.) Next, I added about half a cup or so of chopped up (not pre-soaked) medjool dates (I like to pr

Mine was similar: Crust: Pecans Dates (not pre-soaked) (was supposed to be almonds, but I ran out) Blended in the food processor and pressed into the pie plate. Filling: About a cup and a half of blueberries blended with about half a cup or so of (pre-soaked) dates and some lemon juice Then stir in a couple cups of blueberries. I think the dates give it such a wonderful "fudgy

I made the most delicious raw blueberry pie yesterday. So just now, I was dishing myself up a piece of it, and I asked my 18 yr old daughter if she would like some. She said, no thanks, I don't really like raw food. She was sitting on the couch eating a big bowl of cut up pineapple when she said that!! HA HA !!

There is a little nook built right into my kitchen where the microwave sits - like many kitchen designs. I can't help but notice that if I threw away the microwave, it would be just the right size to put my excalibur. Now if only I could convince my hubby that we really don't need a microwave. He still can't imagine not having it, even though it hardly ever gets used (and NEVER by me, that's

This may be old news to some, but I only just came across it, and I thought it was very interesting.... My daughter the singer, recently did a performance of "Nature Boy" - originally released by Nat King Cole in 1947. It's been around a while, and been released by a number of artists, so many people are possibly familiar with it. I was, but I learned several things I never knew wh

That can be so difficult, especially with such a long-tem visit. When I first became vegetarian, I am kind of embarassed to admit that I was sometimes critical about my husband's meat-eating and other bad habits. Which was really silly - it was me that changed, not him, so how could I be so thoughtless! But he was a really good sport about it, and tried his best to eat what I gave him, altho

How about this..... Rather that donating directly to research for cancer, what about donating locally to a survivor group on your sister's behalf. For instance, for breast cancer, you could look into making a donation to a dragon boat team. That money wouldn't be used for research, but rather to defray the expenses of team, like equipment, boat rental etc. So your money would be going tow

coco is absolutely right about the choking thing, be very careful about anything that can't dissolve in the throat. I wasn't raw when my kids were babies, but I had a little mini-processor that I liked to use to make quick food for them. I would puree bananas or lightly cooked apples or anything at all. People suggested to me back in those days to steer them away from fruits for some reason

Ya know, I am sure there are some, I think I have come across stuff, but I can't remember much. Carol Alt, Woody Harrelson, I think maybe Demi Moore, but I am really not sure. There must be some younger ones that the kids would relate to ?? Somebody must know - anyone? If you can't find anyone famous, anyone who is not famous but looks fantastic would be very effective also. (there are so

As a mom of four teens, here's my two cents. I doubt that they will be much more than mildly impressed by the health benefits or the mental benefits. Or even how appetizing your most impressive gourmet raw meal looks. And at this point, they are likely totally unconcerned with their personal aging process. What would impress my kids would come down to two things. 1. Can you make food sup

If we really want to be "purists", why stop at teflon. What about the fact that the dehydrator itself is practically entirely made of plastic. Isn't that also a bad thing? Probably best not to use it at all. But for me, it really helps to have a few dried crackers and stuff around for when my family is snacking on tempting junk foods. I suppose I will eventually get to a point wh

I think it was Dr. Oz one day who I saw talking about the idea that when a man has difficulties that might make him seek out viagra, it often is the first indication of blood flow problems that are a warning of heart problems. ie: if the heart isn't getting adequate blood flow, perhaps some other areas aren't either. So if a man has problems like that, it can be the first warning of a future
