I was so nervous to start fermenting anything, after reading about mold and toxins and eveything that could go wrong, but Kombucha was so easy. I still have the original scoby I started years ago from a purchased bottle. On it's own it's not too exciting, but a week after "feeding" your scoby a batch of sweet tea, I harvest. I put juice into 16oz bottles plus some fresh pressed j

Thanks Horsea, you make a really good point. My doc had me on Metagenics Ultra Flora Plus DF for a few months, which made bathroom trips worse and gave me awful heartburn, even after halving the dosage. I'm gearing myself up for another round, and a different brand. I bought some peppermint oil capsules, turmeric, and coconut oil. I'm also considering dusting off my kombucha (months ago

John, I really like your answer. Thank you very much for your response. How long do you consider a "long" juice fast/feast?

Hi Veggie Friends, I had a severe pressure/pain in my side for several years, which western doctors told me I was making up (awesome!). I've been working with a natropath for the past year who got the pain to subside through a series of herbs, but my guts are still messed up. She's testing me now for SIBO, which rings true when I read the symptoms. Since I refuse to eat meat, she says if

Just harvested my first batch of homemade sauerkraut with green cabbage, carrot, and jalapenos - mmmm! So excited there was no mold. Going to try fermenting peppers next into a raw sriracha type condiment. Also - I'm pretty surprised my kombucha scoby is still thriving for for over a year, though I've been neglectful - very suspicious of the sugar content though the web swears the scoby eats

Coconut oil has a natural spf of like a 4. I use coconut & castor oil on my face (google "oil cleansing method" ) daily. Before my daily runs I slap a little C.O. on my arms and shoulders & wear a hat & sunglesses to keep the wrinkles at bay.

Anyone have an opinion on xylitol? I've been checking out some recipes for "make your own natural toothpaste," and it keeps popping up. FYI: I've been using plain baking soda for years and am just interested in switching it up, but not if xylitol will mess with me...

You don't really need salt, but you do need sodium. For me: if I'm craving salt I need minerals (dark leafy greens) and sweet cravings = vitamins (fruit). I you cannot shake the salt cravings try getting more greens into your system (green smoothies or juicing veggies + kale/chard/spinach/etc). Or eat a stalk of celery (plenty o' sodium there) and see if that helps you get over it.

I also struggle with letting coffee go. Teechino is a pretty helpful transitional tool- it's made with grounds and it's oily like coffee. It is by no means raw, but it's not as acidic as coffee, and has no caffeine. It's mostly carob, I think.

You can go the cloth route, too. I bought a gigantic pack of white washcloths and have used these for years to keep veggies dry in the fridge. I throw them in with salads, wrap them around herbs like basil and cilantro, and stick 'em inside bags with pretty much any produce.

Oooh! Good to know, Powerlifter! I did use about twice as many beets as "normal" (6 golf-ball sized). I was suspicious it was maybe some pesticide reaction..

I got terrifically ill along with my vegetarian-but-cooked bf. We've been juicing daily for about 2 months; carrots, beets, celery, and stems from the green leaves in use in green smoothies (all organic). We each have 8-16 oz every morning. This week I happened to buy beets from a new farmer's market vendor, though his sign did say organic. It was also the first time I tried juicing chard s

Ugh - when I was a kid I remember the flu shot was for the elderly or those whose systems were so compromised they could die from catching the flu. That's all out the window nowadays. My work has sent out 2 reminders about 'go get your flushot.' I was walking through my farmer's market last weekend and there was some 'diabetes walk' thing going on where they were raffling off flu shots from Wa

Ever had a Lara bar? I used to eat them as snacks until General Mills bought the company, so now I make my own: You'll need a cuisinart or something electric that "chops." I have a "handy chopper" thing from the drugstore that was like 10 bucks. Get yourself some dates and add other yummy stuff like coconut and/or nuts, then mix in the chopper until it "sticks toe

QuoteDrink 1 litre upon rising and 1 litre 30 mins before meals I've actually never heard anyone advise drinking lots of H2O before a meal. I've always heard the opposite, "don't strain your kidneys by drinking more water than you need, and don't dilute your digestive juices before you eat. What's the scoop?

I second tropical's post: if you're new, the best thing to do is focus on adding as much raw food as possible. Worry about phasing out the other stuff later on. It will happen, just give you body time to adjust

I live in California and have the luxury if year-round farmer's market. That's the bulk of my diet, so it's seasonal. I'm not 100% raw yet, either. At the moment the day looks like: Breakfast/Workday Grazing: 60 oz. of green smoothie (football sized melon, half-bunch of kale, and 2 cups of berries (I freeze them) half watermelon / about 10 cups 4 cups grapes Lunch Salad: 1 or 2 h

Jennifer Cornbleeth's chocolate pudding recipe which is avocado + dates + agave + cacao + vanilla, has gotten me through some rough times. I sprout mung beans on my counter and I find wrapping up them in a nori paper with avocado (like sushi but sprouts instead of rice) is a very dense and fulfilling meal. Sundried tomatoes pack a good flavor-punch, too. What works for me is following th

My office moved across town to a new building with a gym! I've started going every lunch break, but I'm finding that I am sore for days after I do weights. Right now I'm about 75% raw. Here's what I'm doing: 20 minute of cardio on one of the machines, usually the elliptical thing or the stairmaster. Then, 20 minutes of weights. I've heard about the 'letting the muscle recover' idea, so

If you're buying them from Whole Foods you can almost guarantee they are pateurized. If you're near a farmer's market, that is usually the best bet for getting *truly* raw nuts. Here's a go at your questions: 1) Can I store them in the freezer? Yes - I find I get freezer-burn on mine unless I wrap them up in several layers of bags. 2) I plan to remove the skins. Should I soak them i

I've read the Skinny Bitch book: pro-vegan, cooked. It blew up because it's "sassy." That Rory woman also writes (or wrote) a column for VegNews. While I do commend those out there spreading awareness of 'where meat really comes from,' and educating people about their food choices, I find the Skinny Bitch authors to be more on the Peta slant of things; (not my cup of tea). IMO Pet

I managed to keep up with oil pulling 15 min. daily for about 6 months. I used coconut oil, because the taste of sesame just didn't do it for me. My teeth were WHITE after about 3 weeks, and a few areas where the receding gums were bad starting snapping back into place. I really wish I had kept it up, though, because as soon as I stopped my teeth turned all kinds of yellow - much worse than ev

Years ago when i did Bikram Yoga every day I saw some miracles. The one gal was a professional Broadway-type dancer and really messed up knees and feet. After about a year of Bikram she was able to opt out of a few surgeries. I have no recollection what her actual ailment was, though...I'd say keep up the greens, use wheatgrass shots as medicine, and check out 'restorative' type yoga exercises

I bought the MYO munchie, the one Boutenko talks about in "Green for Life." As far as I know she never came out with her own line of them, like she's said she was going to. The Dr. Bourke guy will call you from Australia to kind of 'consult' before they ship your order. I also emailed him a lot after the fact, to figure out the best thing to do after I cracked a bottom tooth and ex
