Yeah, there are some words up there that I sure as hell don't recognize! I've lived in the Philippines, but hardly remember anything. I lived in Japan for several years. That was from 1988 to 1994. I remember quite a bit. Then in Thailand for seven years, from December 1999 to August 2006. I became pretty fluent in Thai. Left nearly a year ago. Already I notice some of those words slipping aw

Yeah, thanks for this. I've never heard or read of this man. I'll ask some friends here and a monk. Many people who come here to this temple consider this monk (the monk I'll ask, not the guy in the link) if he knows of this monk. I've been asking around for a raw monk. Asking in various places. Haven't heard of anyone. Nobody in Korea or anyone else. I will send an email to the temple in Berkele

I'm sure the black seeds are viable and the white ones are not. I don't know the word for a seed that hasn't fully matured and maybe never would have even if the fruit had not been picked until later. Immature seed? That doesn't feel right.

WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP IT’S BEEN! Like the melody to this song! Anyway, that’s about the size of it. It’s been many years and it’s been quite interesting, strange in some ways. I left the US in Feb 1986 at 21 years old. Wanted to go to Asia. Saw nothing much in the workworld that interested me so I joined the Navy and asked to go to Japan. They sent me to the Philippines. That wa

HIYA! RAW FOOD AND ENLIGHTENMENT I posted this to my diary but feel like I'd like to give this post a little larger audience. I live at a Buddhist temple in South Korea. Knowing this helps understand what I have written a bit better. A couple of weeks ago I told the abbot here about the pain in my knee. He said to eat rice and asked if there was any problem with rice. Sort of a curt ans

HIYA! RAW FOOD AND ENLIGHTENMENT A couple of weeks ago I told the abbot here about the pain in my knee. He said to eat rice and asked if there was any problem with rice. Sort of a curt answer. I didn't know what to make of it and still don't. I didn't take to it too kindly. Didn't get a warm fuzzy feeling from it. It set me off to thinking. I can imagine that an enlightened person would

I thought the suggestion was to juice the watermelon rind. You mean, to eat the thing, all of it, not just the juice of it, in a smoothie?! And I have read where people say to make sure it's an organic watermelon if you're going to have the rind. I don't much like the seeds but have been eating some of them. I'm also happy to spit them out on the ground where I eat it. I eat outside a lot. And no

LAV Glad you liked the little story about the spinach patch kids! I enjoyed your tale of growing up with vegetables and watering. Implants ... implants ... implants!!! But now that you've whet my appetite about your em-bare-ass-ing story regarding fruits, how could I NOT ask?! So, submit the story please. And then, as a college writing professor loved to say, see how it feels to submit!! W

YOGA Earthangel, what kind of yoga do you do? Today, at the yoga studio, I had the strongest urge to laugh. So I did. I laughed and laughed and laughed. Not out loud but I didn't want to hold back either. Man I felt good today. My fourth day. Boy. Wish I could say that meditation felt at least nearly as good. WILD VEGETABLE Because I so like this plant, I want to offer this link. It

Because I so like this plant, I want to offer this link. It's for the "weed" called by many names. Lambsquarters, Goose Foot, Pig Weed, and I forget what others I've seen. If you see it growing around you, give it a try. Maybe, like Funky Rob, myself, and I'm sure a few others, you'll become a fan. I don't know where in the US it grows but it grows plentiful in the garden here w

TEACHING Just finished my first day. One morning class, just before lunch, then one at 1:00 and one at 1:30. The morning class is the littlest kids. They didn't seem so enthused. The Korean lady who trained me was better with them. The afternoon kids are older and had a pretty good time. Honing myself is the way. I do enjoy the kids for the most part. I don't suppose I'll ever LOVE kids like

YOGA Started Hatha yoga yesterday. A few days ago the monk who I'll call the Yoga Monk (YM) suggested I go to the yoga studio that he goes to sometimes. I decided to go and see what the man had to say about my knee. YM and Sunmi went with me. He said that I should do some leg and knee stretches after each time I do meditation. So I've been doing that. Can't say it's feeling any better but

HIYA! While living in Thailand with a Buddhist group I learned of a way that some Buddhists use to overcome food cravings. If you're squeamish, you may prefer to not read this, or at least to not try it. Chew your food thoroughly, then spit it out. Look at it. Contemplate how disgusting it looks. Then put it back in your mouth, chew it some more, then swallow it. Be mindful the whole

My only comment is, that my understanding is that, like many other fruits with a core, is that agricultural chemicals concentrate in the cores. The core is where fruits take nutrients (and non-nutrients!) in from the plant before they are distributed out to the rest of the fruit. Highly nutritious. But ag chemicals are more concentrated there than in other parts of the fruit. So, apples are the s

WILD FOODS, ENVIRONMENT, REIKI, Recently got the Korean name of a wild plant that I’ve been eating for quite some time. It’s delicious. Has a wonderful nutty flavor. A friend and I went to a local library to borrow a book on local wild plants. From that book I got the scientific name. With that I did a Google search to get some information. Turns out it’s Fat Hen, Goose Foot, Lambs Quar

Hang on a minute there. You say you consume between 400 and 600 calories a day? And with all that physical exertion? How long have you been doing this? Was there a typo somewhere?! Bananas are a great mono meal. Great. Lots of energy, filling, lots of nutrients, and delicious.

AGRICULTURE, TEACHING, MONEY I work a lot in the garden. Like it too. But I really dislike the way we do gardening. So many things. Seems ludicrous to me. Earlier today I saw Kong Yang-ju (the lady who makes food for the monks) preparing a garden that I think we haven’t worked in the past. Someone else’s land, I think. It occurred to me, that maybe someone has decided to work more land bec

Just why is it that a fruit that is old but not moldy isn't so good nutritionally? A few days ago I bought an old watermelon. I buy discounted, old fruit from this lady all the time. They're much cheaper than the freshest stuff, usually very nice tasting, and often better tasting than the freshest fruits. Once bought an old watermelon from her that was great. But this latest one was mushy

MY FRIEND SUN-MI They all speak English. One speaks a little. His name is Shi-min. One speaks a pretty fair amount. His name is Hwang-il. One speaks amazingly well. Her name is Sun-mi. She astonishes me constantly. Maybe I should be finished with this astonishment, but so often I am surprised that she knows this word or that word. And she recalls instantly the translation. A while back she s

I’M NOT CRAZY!; KNEE PAIN Lately I’ve been feeling really really good. Often. Don’t know where this feeling comes from. And it persists nicely. Just today, sitting in the Dharma Hall, listening to the monk (Sunim in Korean) talk (and of course, understanding a few words per minute!) I noticed how good I felt. I had pains in various parts of my body, but the pain didn’t matter so much.

ALAN WATTS – GREAT DHARMA LECTURES This guy, Alan Watts, said the coolest things. The coolest things. He may have been enlightened, I don’t know. But there are lots of things he said that sure suggest that he experienced something that I haven’t experienced. He’s dead now but lots of his lectures are available for free on www.alanwatts.com/. I’ve subscribed to the podcast. One th

However, I can also understand someone, who, though feeling compassion for animals, still eats them, or eats animal products. The compassion just isn't to the point of giving up the foods. Myself, for e

LANGUAGE Yeah, I study Korean. No, I don’t feel like I am making such great progress. In part, the outside conditions aren’t ideal. Sunmi speaks pretty terrific English. She doesn’t speak such terrific simple, clear, slow, Korean. I spend lots of time either alone or perhaps with others but not really involved in their conversations. I just don’t know enough yet to be able to pick out

KIMCHI AND REIKI I don’t know of any kimchi I’ve ever tried which is completely raw. Seems there’s always some roasted sesame seeds in it. And the salt of course …. There are various sea animals made into pastes, then used to make the kimchi. At least the stuff here at the temple is vegan, though not all raw because of the roasted sesame seeds. Tastes great. I know there are pe

BUDDHISM AND RAW FOOD Yikes, this is a long long one. LAV: “i feel like bouncing on a trampoline now u know what they are good for? doing FLIPS!” Some of these kids are so good at flips. It must be exhilarating to jump like that. And to intentionally fall flat on your body. You know you can’t do that on the ground. So I suppose to do that anywhere takes a bit of letting go at first. Unless you’re a kid and haven’t yet built up that id
