I believe, in theory, that we should not use sunscreen because our bodies should be naturally resistant to the sun's rays (think about it: back in our hunter-gatherer days, did we have sunscreen when trekking for days, weeks, months in the hot sun in search of food and shelter? Nope!). HOWEVER - nowadays, I believe that not only is it a good idea to slather on sunscreen, it would be stupid NOT to

Hi sahalies, No, I haven't fully conquered my ED. I thought I had nearly recovered until about 3 months ago when the thoughts started creeping back in and I realized how much more work was yet to be done. I don't think the work is ever really finished... My digestive difficulties, however, have for the most part cleared up. I was originally told to avoid all grains, legumes (incl. soy), cit

Hey sahalies! I am also recovering from an ED, and I went through a bunch of digestive difficulties as well...it's great to find someone LOCAL who I have stuff in common with! In my opinion, food combining is only important if you notice that you have problems digesting certain foods in combination with each other. For example, fruit and fat are not "supposed" to be eaten together,

Even a few months ago, cooked quinoa made me feel really good. But the last time I had it, a couple weeks ago, it sat like a lump in my stomach for like, 5 hours. As with suncloud, cooked veggies don't bother me much.

I LOVE Whole Foods. Best place I've worked so far...there's such a sense of community, and they practice what they preach. Are they good for organic food? HELL yes! There's none better around here. Low prices? Ha! Let me just say this: there's a reason they call it Whole Paycheck.

I'm struggling big time right now actually...but I am getting help. Sometimes I believe it is possible for some to completely recover, to not have any remnants of it whatsoever; but I think the feelings will always resonate with you to some degree, if only just a twinge of empathy felt in your heart for others who are struggling.

Okay, I need to rant. You've been forewarned. So I decided to "treat" myself tonight, honor my cravings, and I had this spicy sweet potato salad from work (Whole Foods). Normally, sweet potatoes are one of the only cooked foods that doesn't make me feel yucky, but this...ugh. I felt like @#$%& afterwards!!! Not only that, but it wasn't even that good. They used yams, not sweet potato

I did go there, back in 2001. Let me just say, the girls you met were right. Ultra-religious and we sat on our asses the whole time, no exercise whatsoever save for a VERY leisurely 15-min. stroll a few days a week. It'd make anyone feel like utter crap!!! PLus, at that point I was vegetarian (for honest reasons, unrelated to the ED) and they weren't even respectful of that! God, I wish I'd known

Um...anorexia is NOT a digestive problem. It causes digestive problems, sure, and such issues may be a part of "feeling fat," but at its core anorexia is a full-on mental illness. The word "anorexia" means "loss of appetite," so if you're talking about that type then I see your point. "Anorexia nervosa" is the actual mental disease, and the one I believe yo

What kind of wheatgrass juicer would you recommend (type and/or brand)? I want something cheap but good; I was thinking a hand-crank one would be good and simple, but how well do they work? Thanks!

Are the bottled, refrigerated juices you can buy at the store raw? I know that juices in the Tetra packs are pasteurized, etc., but what about Happy Planet, Odwalla, etc.? They say "fresh squeezed, not from concentrate" on the bottle, but the fact that they don't expire (according to the date on the package) for a week or so makes me wonder.

That was a great post, suncloud! Although, as I said before, I was never bulimic but anorexic, I can definitely relate. About the choice thing, I've found that what helps is even saying to myself that I have a choice. Whenever I get anxious and/or the urge to be self-destructive, I say to myself, "I have a choice." What this does is put me back in my body, in the present, out of my neur

Hi Inaia; I read recently that rhubarb can be really great for getting rid of mucus. Maybe dip it in agave (similar to what I used to do as a kid, except I used white sugar: bite, dip, bite, dip...Mmmm...)?

Well said DZM. So much of the time I feel like this whole world is eating-disordered and will forever be searching for the "magic button" that will make all their problems disappear. But, like you said, "you can move the chess pieces around, but you are still playing the same self-destructive game." Someone understands!!! lina_marie, I've struggles with an eating disorder (

I get these when I go for more than a day 100% raw. It bugs me because, so long as I get my hemp protein and spirulina in, I feel great otherwise. For anyone else who gets this way, what do you do to stop the dizziness? *Oops! Posted this in the wrong forum!*

Apparently the E3Live supplement contains all the B vitamins. Haven't tried it yet, but many people swear by that stuff. Also, if you aren't 100% raw, nutritional yeast is a very dependable source of B-12. And dirt .

Bronwynsun - actually, I have been doing what you suggested (exercising to increase appetite). It feels SO good to be super hungry and sit down to a great big salad with some avocado. It feels like my body is absorbing every single nutrient and it makes me smile. Plus, my new job is pretty physical, so that helps. Thanks for your advice, though.

FINALLY!!! Someone else who's having this problem. I'm also hesitant to eat a lot of high fat/sugar foods. I do eat dates (about 5) and avocadoes (one) daily, lots of fruit, hemp protein, and, like you, many greens, but it still isn't enough. There's also the aspect of being too full when I try to eat more, which causes me to not be hungry for a longer period of time, resulting in me eating no mo

I'm not a huge fan of the cacao nibs, but I also haven't experimented with them much. I did put them in trail mix with raisins, goji berries, and some seeds though, and it was pretty good. Try mixing up your own concoction!

I was gonna post about this too! Just started working at Whole Foods and we sell it there; apparently it's highly recommended by all the other employees. What's in it exactly? Is it just a type of algae or is there other stuff added to it? What's the difference between it and spirulina?

Lol... Okay, but this is really not funny: I think about food ALL THE TIME!!! Anyone else have experience with this? It seems the higher % raw I go, the more I think about food, eating, recipes, etc. I don't think about cooked foods per se, just food in general. I can't live my life like this!! Also, it seems that after I eat cooked food, I don't obsess about food as much for the rest of the d

Why a banana fast? Why not apples, or grapes, or...? I'm just curious. Is it because of certain nutrients they contain, or merely because they're cheap? I've heard bad things about bananas being hybridized and not a "real fruit," being that they don't have seeds anymore. Also, I found the posts about eating only *ripe* bananas interesting. I've always had problems digesting bananas;

Thanks for the variety of responses! fresh - why do you say grains are "not a food?" Just curious. And I guess what I would consider an allergy is an extremely uncomfortable and/or life-threatening reaction to a certain substance that occurs every time one comes into contact with (or consumes, inhales, touches, etc.) it. I'd classify a sensitivity as a milder version of that. I'm no

148. My theory
I have a theory - and I am in no way bashing raw foods, because I'm mostly raw too - that a big part of people feeling and looking so amazing on the raw diet is that many people have allergies/sensitivities, and the raw diet automatically eliminates so many of the triggers: grains, gluten, dairy, sugar, preservatives, etc. Therefore, ailments clear up, acne/psoriasis disappears, stuffy noses no m

Lovely posts, all of you. I agree with it all...I do believe that our selves know best, and I find that even this forum leads me astray from my own thoughts/feelings. On the other hand, sometimes it guides me back. Miaculpa, what you said about support groups helping until they become dependence - that's it in a nutshell! They're *support* groups, not the be-all end-all. Same with books, DVDs, we
