HIYA! Third of three that I wanna post. What makes a fruit fresh? The little yellow melons that I eat are so doggone delicious when they're soft. Softer than most people like to eat them. Same with persimmons. There are persimmon varieties here in Korea that most people seem to only eat when they're crunchy. I much perfer them when they're soft. And many people say that bananas are better

HIYA! Second of three that I intend to post. This is about vegetable freshness, and how much nutrients are in leafy green vegetables that you get from a store, or, for that matter that you pick from your very own garden, then store in the fridge. If you pick a leaf of lettuce and let it sit for a little while it'll probably wilt before long. That's because of lost moisture, right? Sinc

HIYA! Yeah yeah ... another post about B12. But I have an idea here. At the temple where I live people make various fermented products. A miso - like paste, I think we make soy sauce, and of course there's kimchi. Anyway, a few days ago I looked inside one of the enormous clay jars where the stuff sits and ferments. I noticed dead insects in the jar. It has occured to me in the past when I

I've never noticed a fishy smell on bananas. Not that I remember anyway. I don't know if rinsing your bananas before eating them will do any good but I suppose it wouldn't hurt. I always wash fruit because I don't know where it's all been before I get it. I see other people peeling bananas then holding the flesh with their fingers. I wouldn't do that unless I washed it.

Thanks for all the responses. Tamukha, I did look in the recipes section. This post was originally put there. I didn't see the thread you mentioned. I did a search and found something. Seems to me there was something that popped up from the search that was about tahini. I didn't pay much attention because it didn't seem relevant. And boy o boy, did you ever jump through hoops to make that &qu

When a fruit gets bruised, it's like our bodies getting bruised. Or so I learned in biology class. That is, if I remember correctly. Oxidation turns the flesh of the fruit brown or black, and turns our skin either brown or purple. I don't know why the difference in colors. Oxidation is not a good thing. When metals oxidize, they rust. Honestly, I may have my facts all mixed up about a

Reading this about the Pascalite, I recall that I've got some BENTONITE clay powder. I'm going to dig it up and use it. People say amazing things about bentonite too. I read the link from ROIRRAW and the uses they say that users have reported. I recall some of the same things about bentonite clay. My teeth and gums are the pits - quite literally - probably because of years of neglect, years of ea

HIYA! I put this post in the recipes and food preparation forum some days ago but haven't gotten any responses so I'll try it here. I suppose it's not strictly appropriate for this forum but .... HIYA! I wanna make raw PB but I haven't found a way. I bought a small nut butter making machine from a raw foodist on eBay. The listing says it works best with roasted peanuts but I didn't think it wouldn't work at all with raw peanuts. I tossed some in with the skin still on it but the machine acted like it was constipated! What came out was more like a pate than peanut butter. So I soake

Glad to read all your posts here. LV, nope, don't get all that much kimchi though I really do like the stuff. I usually eat alone, in my room, my own stuff, and don't go get the food that the others eat. When I do eat with them I eat kimchi if it's around. Recently we've had more kimchi made with wild mustard greens than that made with Chinese cabbage. I like the latter much more. And, bo

HIYA! I live at a Buddhist temple in a fairly rural area, on an island off the southern tip of South Korea. We have a garden not too far from the road. The adjacent road isn't much travelled but the road about 500 yards away is far more travelled. I wonder what others have to say about washing or not washing vegetables from such an environment. I usually just pick and eat, so I get some so

In 1993 or 1994 I started eating vegetarian out of compassion for animals. Somewhere along the way I started to believe in health benefits. A year or two after going vegetarian I tried my hand at raw. I have not been always raw nor always vegan. They're both goals. Someday ... perhaps ...! Despite my soft spot for animals, it just hasn't been enough of a motivation for me to go comple

HIYA! I also love persimmons. Boy o boy. Here in South Korea there are many varieties. Many soft and many hard. Even the ones that most people eat hard, I like to let get really soft, then devour them. They're so much sweeter this way. I've heard that many people in India will take a ripe mango and knead it until it's juicy inside. Then they'll make a small hole in the peel and suck out th

Again I've asked a question, and again I've been given a world of answers. Thanks so much everyone. I do indeed have a spiritual practice. Zen Buddhist practice. In some ways it's quite strong. But when I feel like I want to eat, then I oftentimes let the practice wilt. And, yep, I also have a copy of Tolle's book, "The Power of Now". Great. Of course the erratic eating is j

Here on this board as well as other places, I've read where people say that erratic eating behavior stopped after they stopped kicking themselves for it, or once they started to really accept themselves for the way they are. Can anyone out there can give me some idea where I can get help finding my way towards this sort of acceptance? I live in South Korea, so, I'm certainly not expecting

Boy, this thread really relates for me. I've been eating irresponsibly for years. Long before I ever even thought about vegetarianism or veganism, or raw or .... Didn't even realize until about 15 years ago, or less, when I went vegetarian. Then, when I "went" raw, about 13 years ago, boy, it came to the surface. I've been struggling ever since. I've been practicing Buddhism for

There is a lady named Mary Enig, a scientist of some sort. I forget what she specializes in. Lipids researcher, I think. She has written some really scathing things about soy. All soy products except those that have been precipitated for a long time. She's all over the internet. I read a bunch of things that she's written when I lived in Thailand and was researching cocounut oil. She's been very

I went to a hosptial last week for a few things. I asked about a blood check to check for nutrient deficiencies. The nurse told me that the doctor said there's no way to check for nutrient deficiencies. Well, there is, don't know why they said this. So, I pose this question to you. How can I check for nutrient deficiencies? I first thought a blood check would be the way. Then I thought th

PAKD, glad this thread has been inspiration to you. Mostly any inspiration at all, for us to do what we should do .... Sometimes it takes being hit by a ton of bricks, doesn't it? I know that I never feel refreshed and energized when I wake up in the morning. My kindergarten kids are all over me so I gues what I better do is stop typing! Love, and REST, Troy.

Prism, Thanks for your suggestion. Really I do appreciate it. I know that her husband died. I don't know how she feels about this though. It may have been a terrible loss to her, sure. I don't intend to ask about it. We have been nicer to each other lately. I know why I have been nicer but don't know why she has. She lives in a kind of hell, that's for sure. Pakyd, Please please pleas

Hi Pakyd, "I am so worried I am going to sleep through something like something getting the chickens." I wonder what you mean by this. "I am going to try to relax more." It really isn't about trying though, is it. We say "try" all the time, but what really is that? Either we do, or we don't. I suppose what you mean is that you intend to relax more. Or

HIYA! Yeah, I meditate nearly every morning for 30 minutes and nearly every evening. I live at a Zen Buddhist temple! And I do get quite a lot of physical work during the day here at the temple. In the afternoon I go to teach English at a private English language school. Very stressful for me most of the time. Things that others say have helped them have done little or nothing for me. Not raw

Thanks Bryan. I appreciate your response. Here, I have so much anxiety that I hardly get much rest, even when I'm asleep. I look forward to getting to a place where I won't feel the angst. I realize though, that unless I really get over it, I'll carry it with me wherever I go. I've been carrying it around for as long as I can remember. Decades and decades. So, thanks much, Troy.

Boy, pakyd, I feel for you. On the surface, I don't have your situation at all. Not in the least. But, a little deeper, and yep, I feel the same. I feel guilty if I don't work hard, and work a lot. I've recently decided to lighten my load, work-wise, and mentally. Meaning, I'm not going to work so much, AND, I'm going to keep these guilty feelings in check. Today is a holiday here in Korea, s

I clicked on this thread because of the title. I am reading Angela Stokes' e-book called Raw Emotions. I figured this thread would be about this book. I haven't read all the posts but didn't see any mention of the book. She certainly has a lot to say about emotions in the book. Really a terrific book I might add. Years ago I read a book called "When Food is Love" and I'd have to say
