Thanks for the pome, la veronique. Many parts are edible. Nancy Reagan had a solution for drug addiction: just say no. The problem with this idea is that addiction, by definition, effectively prevents you from saying no. If you could say no, you would not be addicted. It is usually thought preferable, to be aware and impeccable, than to be deluded and failing. But, it's not a choice. You ca

I'm also mildly irritated by the word "ignorant" being misused, because it's a significant concept. Like what you say, I take ignorance to be a lack of awareness. It's not a measure of what society (as I see it) calls "intelligence", which is how much you resemble a calculator (how swiftly you consult and repeat trivia). Words are word's worth. People having sympathetic pri

I suspect several people's posts were misunderstood in this thread. I assume the author(s) uses the word "bitch" (and "skinny" with tongue in cheek, in anger, in empowerment. It's meaning is lost outside of the context. It is temporarily reactionary. And, it's not okay to then call them bitches, obviously. Similarly, someone who is accused of being "a queer" mig

I consume a few citrus seeds most days (lemon and/or grapefruit), by accident. Is this bad or good for me?

Neat. I wonder what the bags are made of that allows them to not be destroyed when they are crushed. I know the guy on the video is saying that the press part is less important than the triturator. But, my biggest juicing problem is the time it takes to make juice. I wonder if juicing would go faster if you used one of those cheap burr type juicers to make pulp out of vegetables, then put t

Either I don't know how to use my manual wheatgrass juicer, or it is not worth the money. It cost about $30 USD, is made of pot metal and has a hand crank. Putting one of those small pots of wheatgrass that you might see at evil megacorporation resulted in one droplet of juice (like from an eye dropper). Using a proper amount of wheatgrass (~3/4 of a 22"/11" tray to produce 4oz),

When I had someone from Iran living with me he used to blend cantaloupe, water and cardamom. It's delicious.

When I put greens in my refrigerator and they touch the freezer, the part that touches turns black. I agree with Curator though, frozen vegetables is better than no vegetables.

A year ago or so, I could not find any information anywhere that I looked (including sproutman's book), about how much wheatgrass you need to make a given quantity of juice... I experimented and it appeared to be that I needed 4 22x11 inch trays in circulation, in order to have 4 oz daily. My experience has been that a 4 inch pot of wheat grass would make something like a teaspoon of juice

I often don't have juice when I really would have benefited from it, because it just takes too long to make. Do you have any ideas? I have a vitamix (model 5000 from many years ago) and nut milk bag. And I have a green life juicer. That is quick enough for me if I juice lettuce. But, it has always overheated and shut off when I've tried to juice the really nutritious stuff like kale, even when

Arggh... one of my pet peeves is how almost every store throws my favorite part of celery away (and the best part of coriander, and the best part of turnips and the best part of ... Why oh why do they do it?)! I don't know about the nutrient value of the leaves but my body seems to think they are the good part. I think it is okay to consume raw and juiced. There is also "chinese celer

My vitamix is quite noisey because of the vibration. I worried about this when I lived in an apartment. What I did was sit the blender on top of a ream of printer paper and this made a huge difference. Actually, first I tried a sheet of rubber foam, but I the heat from the blender seemed to cause gas from the rubber to fill the air. So, someone might have an idea bout something better than a r

I bought some mangosteen and after I got home I noticed there is yellow paste like stuff on it, near the stem, and some inside some of them. Do you remember seeing that? Is it organic matter (insect poo maybe?), dried sap?, or some pesticide residue...?

I don't know if this contributes to the discussion, but: I was essentially raw every day until night time for a few years. I was kind of afraid that I would suddenly become starving and then I would fulfill my suspicion. For me, large amounts of green juice was a good way for me to get myself on track eating raw, because it seemed easier (I did 2 months of the "global juice feast", b

I worried about salt a while back when I read about the symptoms of a sald deficiency. People posted lots of info in response: Essentially, you can easily get enough salt be eating tomatoes, celery, chard, and it's hard to get too much eating raw. Where enough and too little are the opinion of some nutrionist.

I think it is coconut husk: So, it would depend on how it's processed and how the coconuts were grown. What a coincidence, I've been calling places today to try and find it.

So, it's getting to be time for me to start planting things I think. I live in an apartment with a cement patio that is something like 35x5 feet, I have several 66 gallon tubs filled with compost. I want to make a long trough like thing to put soil in with a clear plastic covering. Do you have any ideas? I have seen plans involving wood and nails etc., that seem a bit unnecessarily involved, t

I saw a person on youtube demonstrating how to grow wheatgrass. She claims that adding azomite powder to soil helps prevent mold. I will try it and see what happens. My sprouting got moldy during the coldest part of the winter for some reason. So, maybe climate has something to do with it?

I thought I'd try sprouting rice, so I searched and found this about making hatusga genmai (sprouted rice): it suggests sprouting the rice in heated water (30-40 C, 86-104 F). I imagine this is so that it will be warmed enough to be like cooked rice, but cool enough to be able to sprout. But, do you think it might be a good idea to try sprouting grains this way, in 86 degrees fahrenheit w

Thanks. The doctor did actually say she thought it was TMJ, but forgot to give me any information after I was sent to the nurse. As far as I can tell, I don't clench my teeth. I just keep my jaw/face muscles clenched and can't relax them. So, I'm not sure if the eraser trick will help. I also plan to see a dentist.

I have pain in my jaw, part of which seems to be because I compulsively flex the muscles in my face and form suction in my mouth. If I consciously try not to do it, my muscles are still tense. I catch myself doing it and try to relax, about 100 times per day or so. I also compulsively frown when I'm in public, and feeling nervous. I try to force a smile and manage something sort of like Joh

So, my first attempt at using the second growth was that it tasted less sweet and had the bad kind of mold growing near the earth (brown mold). It seemed less healthy, which only makes sense. So, I'm now tearing the second growth up and putting it in my compost stuff, covered. I did some experiments: 1. Use one cup of seeds per 11"x22" tray. 2. Put seeds on the dirt and cover wit

Oof... Well, that was my plan, to compost on the patio. It might get down to 35 degrees sometime, but it's not that cold yet. I don't know if I have space for a tumble thingy in doors. I was going to try to simulate the tumbler using the sealable garbage cans, by toppling them over and back every day. After day 1, they smell already, but then I have too much vegetable stuff and not enough brow

Thanks! I just got back from trying to gather stuff for composting. I thought I'd try to imitate the instructions in my Rodale's composting book for "composting in a bag", which doesn't use worms. I don't want to subjecting any poor worms to any mistakes I might make, just yet. I have a patio, the length of two sides of my apartment (the landlord calls it a back yard). It's all cemen

That's interesting. This is my first time. I sprouted the wheat for 2 days, then put the sprouts on top of soil (organic potting soil) in the tray and kept it covered, because the book I have says to grow the wheat in the dark until it's 2 inches tall... I'm not sure why. So, all together it took about 9 days to get 6 inch tall grass. I used a "neon" grow light during the day after it w

The book I have, by sproutman, (wheatgrass, nature's finest medicine), suggests using trays without holes, but I don't know why. I gradually increased the amount of water I was watering the grass with and never ended up getting the soil too wet (judging by putting my finger allow the edge of the soil. When I bought trays, the person at the nursery suggested that I get them in pairs, one with h

I live in an apartment in Silicon Valley in California with an area outside with concrete. I want to try to start growing plants there, and I would like to use the large amounts of plant waste that I produce and the leaves that drop on the ground for compost. How much compost produces how much soil? The book I have doesn't describe actually getting the soil from the compost, except once every
