Thanks coco! It is good to check ahead if you can. My team sometimes goes out for beer and chicken wings after practice (you might think a bunch of cancer survivors could come up with a better idea, but the majority rules). Anyhow, I showed up one night at the pub, with a bottle of water with some liquid greens added to it - interesting color. But the waitress took it away from me and

Whatever you decide - whether you bring something along, place a special order, or even just eat beforehand, the biggest thing you can do is bring a great attitude. A few weeks ago, I attended a dinner for my dragonboat team. I ate ahead, and showed up with a bottle of water. Sat down, and then got a lot of funny looks when everyone got their food and I chose to have nothing. When they qu

Jodi: Years ago, I was very involved in the anti-bullying group at school, and I attended a workshop which included a presentation by a man whose son, a high school kid, had been murdered. The man was just devastated by the loss, but he had something to say that I really took to heart. On the last day of his son's life, they had gotten up early, before school, and he had taken his son out

Jodi: I am so sad to think of your unimaginable loss. So young, and the poor kids, this will be so hard for everyone in your brother's life. It's a painful reminder to every one of us to treasure the people around us that we care about. Nothing that we have in this world is more valuable than the time we spend with those we love. My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Sapphire

This is a great question, and something that I have been dealing with for some time. Less often lately, everyone in my family seems to be so busy these days, we often don't sit down together any more, so good for you that you are able to work at this! I had a few tricks I would practice. One thing I would do in the summer was to encourage my hubby or son to get busy on the BBQ. That way, I

I think that for pretty much everyone who goes from the type of diet you are describing that your mom is following who goes to a purely raw food diet, there will be some very interesting cleansing processes. This would not be all that unusual even for someone with no major health history, and will settle down very quickly - same with any bloating or stomach discomfort. I remember when I first sw

Thank you for keeping us all on track Bryan! Let's face it, I don't know about anyone else, but if I am ever in the mood for my choices an opinions to be debated and criticized, all I have to do is mention my preference for raw food to ...... well, ....... just about anyone at all. (outside of this forum) This is one place that I know I can always find support and encouragement, and oft

Moderation in everything??? Something worth thinking about, I suppose...... Let's start by setting the goal of achieving MODERATE good health. This ought to ensure a MODERATELY long life expectancy, right? And what a relief to only have to worry about food tasting MODERATELY good. So much easier than making the effort to find the very best organic, fresh, ripe fragrant, luscious fruits

I also like almond milk. Soak the almonds overnight, blend in the vitamix with a date and some water, strain and drink. The pulp makes a really nice spreadable "cheeze": flavor it however you want, a little minced garlic, parsley, lemon juice. Spread on flax crackers or celery.

Linda - that sounds like you are doing great! The only thing I would say is to check the source of the protein powder - if it it whey based or soy based, I don't think it is great, and especially not an isolate. You could leave it out altogether, but if you really feel you need a protein, I think the health food store could find you one that is rice or hemp based or something - see what they re

Oh yes, Whatever you do, if you stray from the raw path, please STAY AWAY FROM DAIRY! Every kind of dairy. I personally think that dairy products are more dangerous to human health than cigarettes. I can't stress this enough. If you want more information from someone who has researched it, either buy a book called "Your Life in Your Hands" by Jane Plant, or else look around

Hi Linda: Do you know how to make green smoothies? If your mom could sip a little bit of green smoothie, it might be more palatable when her appetite is not great. If you flavor it with fruit, and start off with mild tasting greens, like a little bit of spinach, it will taste very good. (and greens are great for protein) If she can drink some water, there is something I took when I had ca

Lee - That's amazing about the juicer and the books, I agree, it must be meant to be for you!! It's always good to listen when the forces of the universe conspire to get a message to you. I am so glad to hear you are feeling the urge to follow a good healthy path - not only do I believe this is the best thing you could do, but it sounds like deep inside, your inner self is feeling the sam

I notice that when I use spinach in my green smoothies, I can't taste it at all, but that might be just because I am so used to it. Try a little and see. I don't think it is very strong tasting, because I can even get my teenagers to drink it, and that's no easy feat! My best advice is to experiment a little, you might be surprised!

Oh Lee, I am so sorry to hear of your health developments, it has got to be one of the scariest things you have ever had to face in your life. I remember when I was diagnosed with cancer, it was surreal. I couldn't seem to wrap my brain around this really happening to me. I still had small (medium?) children for crying out loud. I was a vegetarian!!! I was only 40, how could this be happen

There has been a new development.... My daughter and the boyfriend came over yesterday. She has quit her job. She has no other job lined up. I asked her what her plans were, and the boyfriend interupted and announced that he "had it covered". At first, I thought he meant that he had found her a different job, but it turns out that he seemed to mean that he will cover the bills

Hi Pakd: I think your passion is terrific, it's a great quality to have and it just makes you a more interesting person. And, I totally agree with you. I guess one of my reasons for being a bit traditional is that when I was sick, there was so much stuff out there which was nothing but a bunch of charlatons, preying on desperate people, It's still out there. It would be so much better

Thanks!! Initially, a doctor from Vancouver BC did an experiment to see if dragon-boating (he chose that particular sport because of the upper body exercise) could have a positive impact on people living with lymphedema or at risk for developing lymphedema after breast cancer treatement. The results were very positive. The original team was called "Abreast in a Boat" Since that

Hey again pakd, just one thing... you said: Did you noticed that the survival rate in this boys story was between chemo or with no treatment. Absolutely right - if someone was able to present me any alternative treatment with a proven success rate higher than 80 % the choice would be so simple. Also, sorry, I never meant to suggest that chemo alone is the solution to cancer, just

Hi pakd4fun: Hope you are well! I want to agree with you so much, everything in my body would like to hate chemo, but the doctors gave him a 80-90% survival with the chemo and a 5% without it. That Native American treatment she wanted to replace it with might be perfectly effective, but I doubt that it has been properly tested or proven. In theory, I would like to agree with you, but in

Chemo is very scary I had six months of three chemo drugs when I had breast cancer. Six years later, I am still alive. My 12 year old daughter's friend got cancer the same time as me. She had chemo, but she died anyway. Did the chemo help me? I don't know Would I still be ok if I hadn't done it? I don't know How much has it damaged me? I don't know - but the nurse

Hi Lee_123: I don't know much about acupuncture, but I have a condition called lymphedema in my left arm. It swells up with lymphatic fluid sometimes, and my fingers are fatter on my left hand - complication of breast cancer, but what works for me might be helpful to you. (goodbye wedding ring!) For me, healthful eating is very important - when I falter and drink alcohol or eat horrible f

Thanks so much, I think I am sort of on the right track, I just feel like I want so badly to do more, but I am really scared as one of her last few "outside" links, that I do not want to alienate her in any way. It can be such a tightrope walk. She has two sisters who are involved with the most wonderful caring boyfriends. The contrasts boggle my mind, and on one hand, I would lov

I hope anyone can give me some advice, I am so worried. One of my daughters is involved with a boyfriend that really scares me. They have been living together for about a year. He has never hurt her physically, but he is so unbelievably controlling of her that all my mental alarm bells are going off, and I am really dreading just what this guy might be capable of. For starters, she has
